Fuel stations empty and car queues

IUsedToRuleTheWorld · 01/04/2026 18:18

I live in a town about 10 miles outside of Edinburgh - population about 70,000.

We have several garages and I just usually go to the local Tesco as it's cheap and convenient. It seems we have no fuel at all now. The asda fuel station had a delivery this afternoon and there was a queue of cars waiting to fill up so I am guessing that will run dry again soon.

I did notice the roads seemed quieter when I was out and about and so i did wonder if people were staying home to save their fuel.

Hard to know if there are actually shortages or if everyone is just panicking.

I have to admit I usually just fill mine when it gets empty but I have been going once a week to top it back up to full at the moment.

What's happening in your local area. I've been checking FifeJammers Facebook and it seems other areas are running out too ie Cupar.

We have people panic buying a bit in York. The supermarkets are running out as people seem to be just topping up all the time. My car had gone to the petrol warning light after driving eldest to a university visit 3 hours away. The elderly chap before me just put the minimum spend amount in!

it’s the chances in buying patterns that seems to causing supply issues/ delivery issues.

In our area it is a repeat of the toilet roll panic in COVID!

Why does topping up cause shortages? I don’t really understand. They’re not suddenly using a whole load more fuel than normal? They’re not stockpiling it. How does it work?

Don't be naive. If people are filling up when they would normally be happy with a half full tank then stockpiling is EXACTLY what they are doing.

Having said that, no problems here in South Yorkshire.

Snoopy51 · 01/04/2026 21:58

Issues here in the north east of Scotland.

People need to calm the fuck down really. I think it’ll settle, suspect people are panic buying ahead of Easter weekend.

Waterbaby41 · 01/04/2026 22:00

People who panic buy really annoy me - all everyone needs to do is just take a breath, carry on as normal and there won't be any shortages. Did no-one learn anything from COVID and loo rolls?

BambinaCucina · 01/04/2026 22:06

We've had no supply issues in Essex and I don't think the garages are over-busy. Except Costco, which is always mobbed silly.

YourWinter · 01/04/2026 22:08

I read on another site that an Asda employee told them they restricted public access to their diesel so they had enough for their own delivery fleet. I don’t know if that’s a particular branch.

Because, rather than wait a week, lots of people have topped up this week, instead, when they normally wouldn't. It's been sold faster than it would normally be replenished.

Also: fuel is delivered to forecourts by tanker on a schedule and it isn't usually possible to change this to a much greater frequency due to number of available tankers.

MaidOfSteel · 01/04/2026 22:09

We’re in Lanarkshire and went to our local Tesco station today. Out of the 16 outlets, only 2 were working.

Seeingadistance · 01/04/2026 22:09

Every time I've bought petrol over the past couple of weeks the price per litre has increased by at least 6p. I live in a small village - the nearest petrol stations are a few miles away, and are expensive compared to the ones in bigger towns. Most of my driving is local but once or maybe twice a week I do pass other, always cheaper petrol stations. So, I keep an eye on the prices and if I'm on a longer journey which takes me past cheaper petrol, then yes, I top up! Why should I drive past cheaper fuel just so I can buy more and more expensive fuel next week?

brunettemic · 01/04/2026 22:15

This is what happens whenever the media decides to have stories about potential shortages. Rather than just act normally everyone rushes out and exacerbates the situation, then the media talk about it again as well as social media and sites like this, then people rush out again.

Lovesabadboy · 01/04/2026 22:18

North Oxfordshire here.
We were down to our last 40 miles, so filled up this afternoon at Sainsburys.
It was busy, but not horrendously so, however 4 of the pumps had no unleaded and 6 of the pumps had no diesel.
There was, of course, one selfish person filling up both his car and a HUGE jerry can! 🙄

Icanflyhigh · 01/04/2026 22:24

East Midlands here, haven't seen any queues but have read lots of stations are out of fuel.
I did my usual yesterday and drove to the nearest place on fumes, brimmed the tank as I usually do and left.
My fuel tank parted company with my truck 8 miles later!! Fortunately the tank didn't split and I now have £114 worth of diesel ratchet strapped to the chassis!!😂😂
Can't drive it, can't drain it!
Bugger!

RonaldMcDonaldTrump · 01/04/2026 22:25

We are a nation of thick sheep, blindly influenced by anonymous posts on Facebook groups and Mumsnet. There's a poster on this actual thread who has said they've been out to get fuel after reading this thread, and plenty of others lurking who will have done the same.

MerseyChick · 01/04/2026 22:28

@IUsedToRuleTheWorld Stop bloody scaremongering about petrol.

ThatNattyPlayer · 01/04/2026 22:28

I’m West Midlands, all normal here for the 4 stations closest, I also work in logistics and we have a fleet that is across the UK, nobody has had any issues getting fuel, some increase but that’s all , same with all our fleet in Europe, no issues there either apart from increased cost.

OtherS · 01/04/2026 22:32

South Bucks, Tesco ran out of unleaded once last week or week before. And forecourt was closed yesterday morning when I drove past, but open yesterday afternoon when I came back. Not had any queues at all though. Roads do maybe seem a bit quieter.

Sainsbury's in Murrayfield had petrol this afternoon.

AngelinaFibres · 01/04/2026 22:33

No problems here. North Herefordshire Our local petrol station is privately owned and is the lowest price in the county. No queues.

gentileprof7 · 01/04/2026 22:34

TheLizardQueen · 01/04/2026 18:25

15 miles outside of Edinburgh, our garages have huge queues and many of them have no unleaded left!

Sainsbury's in Murrayfield had petrol this afternoon.

ShiftySquirrel · 01/04/2026 22:36

I was the only person in the garage when I filled up, having finally got home after a 4 hour round trip.
All fuels in stock. I won't put any more in until next month. Dread to think what that'll cost!

The guy in the garage said the premium stuff was going up by 6p/lt again tonight.

mummyh2016 · 01/04/2026 22:38

Staffordshire. People round here are going crazy, supermarket stations are all out. I filled up last Friday so will be good for another 10 days or so. I work 15 miles away and the supermarket fuel stations there seem to have plenty of fuel so touch wood I’ll fill up over by work when I’m due.

SplendiferousKnickers · 01/04/2026 22:38

North Oxfordshire correspondent here. On Monday there was no fuel at Tesco, but yesterday it was open again and no busier than usual.

Morriba · 01/04/2026 22:41

The main initial problem was petrol retailers buying fuel in smaller amounts, because that's what they do when prices are volatile. Then people started hedging and buying just in case because let's face it in a country with such shit public transport, the last thing anyone who needs to be anywhere on time, ever (ie most people) wants is to be unable to drive.

TennisLady · 01/04/2026 22:47

I’m in NE and some supermarket stations have been selling out. Assuming it’s because everyone is now only using them because they’re cheaper. I’m also topping up weekly now because of the price continuing to go up.

Nuffpills · 01/04/2026 22:51

I have driven home from work this evening and drove past 6 petrol stations and absolutely no queues and from what I could see there were no pumps closed .
Prices crazy though. All increased by about 5p per litre from this morning at 6am !
