Fuel stations empty and car queues

I live in a town about 10 miles outside of Edinburgh - population about 70,000.

We have several garages and I just usually go to the local Tesco as it's cheap and convenient. It seems we have no fuel at all now. The asda fuel station had a delivery this afternoon and there was a queue of cars waiting to fill up so I am guessing that will run dry again soon.

I did notice the roads seemed quieter when I was out and about and so i did wonder if people were staying home to save their fuel.

Hard to know if there are actually shortages or if everyone is just panicking.

I have to admit I usually just fill mine when it gets empty but I have been going once a week to top it back up to full at the moment.

What's happening in your local area. I've been checking FifeJammers Facebook and it seems other areas are running out too ie Cupar.

My local Sainsbury's just completely closed their forecourt. No diesel this morning and now now petrol either.

igelkott2026 · 02/04/2026 16:58

Fleet Services on the M3 had no diesel on Sunday, there were signs on the overhead gantries.

UnexpectedlyRetired · 02/04/2026 18:36

My local garage was closed just now (Edinburgh).

UnexpectedlyRetired · 02/04/2026 18:37

Local paper has just posted a film of petrol queues at Costco. I guess everyone is filling up for the Easter weekend.

mateysmum · 02/04/2026 18:58

Filled up in Somerset this morning with no queue but later I went to Morrisons. The car park was full and so not surprisingly was the petrol station but the garage a quarter of a mile away had ni custom because they were a couple of pence per litre more expensive.
Having said all that I'm going to London next week and am taking the train even though it is less convenient and no cheaper because I was panicking in case I couldn't fill up to make the return journey!

Jayne35 · 02/04/2026 19:07

Filled my car up on way home from work today at a BP, no queues but not the cheapest garage, this was my once a month up after I got paid, I won't be joining the 'better top up my tank weekly brigade" as that is ridiculous and making the situation worse.

Leedsfan247 · 02/04/2026 19:16

Blame the likes of the Daily Mail pushing the rationing narrative.

with the straits closed that represents a 20% reduction in supply, if everyone is sensible (sic) there really should not be a problem 😀.

I live in Dundee and I think there are only 3 stations that have fuel left. It’s ridiculous!

Sueandthegoldfish · 02/04/2026 19:36

I usually fill up at Tesco, Carlisle on my way back from the gym on a Thursday. They had no diesel at all today. The local garage did have some thankfully as I was down to 50 miles in the tank.

OldScribbler · 02/04/2026 19:36

Thank Trump.

Pedallleur · 02/04/2026 19:39

Anyone know how fuel gets ordered? Does a supermarket have eg a weekly delivery or they can order as required? Seems Scotland is struggling if I read these posts.

Reading that it appears it's just demand outstripping supply and there no shortages.

Buzyizzy217 · 02/04/2026 19:46

Your behaviour is causing the fuel shortage! The UK operates a just in time system for food and fuel. All it takes is for people to buy six more litres than they usually do to cause a fuel shortage.
I’ve bought my usual weekly amount and a little fed up with people filling up. It causes delays and shortages.

Pelsall116 · 02/04/2026 19:48

I am in the Midlands, filled up this morning, just drove straight on and filled up without any issue, no queues

Greentableleg · 02/04/2026 20:01

Slightly busier in Morrisons petrol station than normal but could be due to Easter weekend. I'm in Essex.

Coxy1234 · 02/04/2026 20:02

We're having problems here too. I work in Cardiff and live in the valleys and there are queues/petrol stations running out everywhere on my commute home.

Hereforthecommentz · 02/04/2026 20:59

No queues in Hampshire, no shortages. What's going on in Scotland???

Nothing in this part of Scotland!

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 02/04/2026 21:01

I worry for my friend, she's in a wheelchair and can't rely on public transport, as some bus drivers are incredibly ableist.

Ladymeade · 02/04/2026 21:07

I'm in Lincolnshire and most stations it seems, have run out of diesel, so no queues...

SauvignonBlanche · 02/04/2026 21:35

I’ve carried on as normal and now need to fill up to visit family at Easter 100 miles away.

Tried to fill up at Sainsburys but no diesel to be had, there’s some at the local Shell but the cost is extortionate!

RedRock41 · 02/04/2026 21:54

Not too bad for now. What’s insane is globe buying cheap non essential goods from countries like China still when fuel shortages pending. Like shipping cheap party decorations around half the world is ok yet ration fuel and take the bus to work!?

celticprincess · 02/04/2026 21:58

I usually go to our local Sainsbury’s. I was down to 30 miles and car kept telling me. Went to Sainsbury’s and it was closed. It’s been open and shut all week from what I gather. Gets a delivery and runs out. I was a bit worried as I didn’t have time to trek about looking for another place as we were on our way to a booked activity. Luckily the shell garage near there had plenty and no queues.

I use a full tank each week. I drive around our county which is quite large and rural. I’ve a larger suv type car so £80 to fill today with the cheaper unleaded. I don’t have time to go and top up each day as I come in from work and kids to take to activities most evenings. I don’t want to panic buy either and usually do wait until my red light comes on.

Next week we are visiting family. 300 miles each way and probably some trips whilst we are there. This has been planned for ages. I’m not stockpiling or pack buying fuel I don’t need. It’s all needed.

The price of fuel is already eating into my travel expenses for work as the HMRC rate of 45p per mile has been the same since I left uni and got my first car around the head 2000!! My trips also mean I need tyres often. I had one blow out in December on a Sunday and had to call a mobile out of hours person as in was 40 miles from home. My service just before that had picked up 2 tyres needing replacing in about 6 months but that one blew within a month - possibly a puncture but mobile chap said that the tyre owed me nothing!! My other one was meant to last another month or so but I’ve booked in for a new one this weekend and a couple of people have commented it looks worn. My 45p per mile is to help with fuel and maintenance costs but probably won’t even cover fuel soon.

Ilovegrantnicholas · 02/04/2026 22:24

Top of a Wales' valley here. Bit pricey but no queues.

DugnuttEyeBoogies · 03/04/2026 00:11

North Scotland, the town’s Big Tesco and the edge of town garage both completely out of fuel. Ended up getting some at a little local village one about 10 miles out who was saying it’s been mad busy.

Allonthesametrain · 03/04/2026 01:02

Same here in NW, tesco oit of fuel then sainsbury is fine for now. Did put in a full tank but I usually do.
