Would you spend £240 on a North Face coat for a 13-year-old?

North face coat, 240quid. Would you spend it on your dd13?

If I could afford one maybe, but I can't, so I bought her a Columbia coat instead.

Crunchymum · 22/03/2026 07:54

Nope. Not a chance.

Recently got a lovely Trespass coat for £40 (me) and (£20) for DD from MandM.

£240 is a ludicrous amount for a 13yo to spend on a coat.

HitMePlease34 · 22/03/2026 07:56

Can you look for the same coat on Vinted? I find my teenagers refuse to wear a coat most of the time so those on Vinted are also hardly worn (for me to have at home and my kids to hardly wear it as well).

I'd look on vinted, I recently sold a nearly brand new expensive coat, whoever bought it had a bargain, it's worth a look on that site X

I just don’t have the headspace for vinted tbh and then how do I know I’m not getting a dud, I have no redress if something is wrong with it etc. she will definitely wear it. She wears coats as do all her friends, must be some weird anomaly where we live.

She will definitely wear it, she wanted it.

There’s loads on Vinted get her one off there give it a wash and don’t tell her it’s second hand, no one will tell

madaboutpurple · 22/03/2026 09:14

If it was me, I would be looking on eBay/vinted.

Ironfloor269 · 22/03/2026 09:14

No.

Because;

  1. The North Face is not known for sourcing their down ethically

  2. DD is adamant that the black version makes you look like a road man.

Minnie798 · 22/03/2026 09:17

Yes I would. Then I'd sell it on, assuming it was kept in a good enough condition.

Statsquestion1 · 22/03/2026 09:27

I just had a quick look on vinted for the exact one she has and i can’t see one and tbh my head is fried from looking for 5mins on there…so much shite to trawl through(and yes that’s with filters on) and then there’s the idea of trusting whoever is selling in the first place. It just doesn’t do it for me.

She has a younger brother who might wear it when she is finished with it but to
be honest it’ll still fit her when she is in uni I imagine. 😂

My dd had hers a good few years. I have a limit for a coat but it was for her birthday so it turned out to be a brilliant present.

So many posters live in these places where teens don’t wear coats, don't have Longchamp bags and judge anyone who follows a trend!

My dd’s group all dress the same and have done since year 8. Year 11 and only now I’m seeing a change! No harm done.

Edit to add- How could I forget? Air force ones, Nike socks, Nike and Addidas bags!

DairyMilkFreeZone · 22/03/2026 09:44

Not a chance!

Flomingho · 22/03/2026 09:57

Yes and have done so in the past for DD. Gave it to a friend's DC when it no longer fitted. Although expensive North Face is good quality and tends to last. I have a couple of NF coats that I have owned for years and they are still as good as new. However, if affordability is an issue you shouldn't feel under pressure to purchase it.

Branleuse · 22/03/2026 10:05

I couldn't afford to, so no.
I would however ask her if she can find one on vinted or at tkmaxx that she liked.
North face is a good brand, but there is a really good chance that she will want a different coat in a year or two whether this one still fits or not, and just because it's a good brand, doesn't mean it won't get damaged or nicked or ruined.

Young teenagers are in peak peer pressure time. You have to manage that.
My kids are all older now, and I'm really noticing that they seemed so much more keen for me to buy them expensive branded stuff, but now they earn their own money, somehow don't desperately need a £200 trapstar coat or Ed Hardys latest jeans anymore.

InconvenientlyMaterial · 22/03/2026 10:09

No way! Not even if I could afford it, which I can't. Partly because I know kids occasionally get mugged for them. Partly because I want them to find their self worth elsewhere. I'm happy for them to ask for specific styles but not necessarily specific labels. We buy almost all our clothes on vinted now.

Where we live there's so much diversity. I think that helps with kids being able to see the bigger picture perhaps? Which is not to say I don't see plenty of those coats - I do - but there's so many other kids / styles/ tribes too. So many kids much less fortunate than mine and so many kids far more wealthy. My teenager has friends who are all very different from each other. No one style to fit in with.

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 22/03/2026 10:12

Probably not, unless it was a much sought after Christmas present or something or something they've wanted for months/years

VividDeer · 22/03/2026 10:12

I guess if it was her main birthday gift and her choice. But my dd is not likely to think it's a wise choice of spending yet. She's 13 and wears a berghaus parker.

EweCee · 22/03/2026 10:16

No, we wouldn’t. But DC wanted to spend her money so we: went for the NF teenage model (same except for cuff on sleeve and fits me so not even smaller than adult sizes), signed up to NF account so got birthday discount and then bought it in a NF outlet - all in got a £340 jacket for £115. And they wear it daily so for us worked out.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/03/2026 10:17

I probably spent that much for DD for a good walking coat for DofE - she’s still using it over 10 years later. Not a North Face, she’d have shied away from the brand if it had been trendy then (“Logos are for people who think they’re cool but aren’t, mum”) though I guess it’s the less practical styles which kids want not Goretex?😂

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 22/03/2026 10:17

Perhaps in the autumn not at this time of year unless in the sale and they had done all their growing

MrsPositivity1 · 22/03/2026 10:18

Absolutely not

MrsKeats · 22/03/2026 10:30

Yes.
