No way! Not even if I could afford it, which I can't. Partly because I know kids occasionally get mugged for them. Partly because I want them to find their self worth elsewhere. I'm happy for them to ask for specific styles but not necessarily specific labels. We buy almost all our clothes on vinted now.

Where we live there's so much diversity. I think that helps with kids being able to see the bigger picture perhaps? Which is not to say I don't see plenty of those coats - I do - but there's so many other kids / styles/ tribes too. So many kids much less fortunate than mine and so many kids far more wealthy. My teenager has friends who are all very different from each other. No one style to fit in with.

Find their self worth elsewhere???
What a bizarre comment.
Do you only dress in horsehair shirts?

My dd had hers a good few years. I have a limit for a coat but it was for her birthday so it turned out to be a brilliant present.

So many posters live in these places where teens don’t wear coats, don't have Longchamp bags and judge anyone who follows a trend!

My dd’s group all dress the same and have done since year 8. Year 11 and only now I’m seeing a change! No harm done.

Edit to add- How could I forget? Air force ones, Nike socks, Nike and Addidas bags!

Edited

Tbf longchamp bags are not a thing here either, we are in Ireland where they have a lot of school books so they have proper school rucksacks…but…they all have the same brand ones 😂 but that’s mostly because they are the comfiest and longest lasting.

Over half the girls in my DD’s year wear them (private girls school). I refused to pay that much and DD has a Nike one in a similar style.

No. Ridiculous amount of money. You're paying for a label.

Not at all.
Bought one years ago and its as good as the day it was bought.
Not a stitch out of place.
Well worth the money.

hahabahbag · 22/03/2026 11:22

No, dc have a habit of loosing things, might get stolen and by next year another brand will be the fashion. You can pick up north face coats second hand or “last years design” cheaper anyway under £100.

hahabahbag · 22/03/2026 11:27

@Anonanonanonagain. Dry robes are popular here along with helly Hanson jackets, I think coastal area have a different style, luckily my local secondary has a school waterproof jacket and school fleece jacket which whilst not compulsory most kids wear even on weekends

Denim4ever · 21/03/2026 23:28

That's reminding me of another phrase our DS used about North Face and similar. 'Logos are roadman'. Re London: students in London don't seem to wear North Face.

When a jacket is both standard schoolwear for 13 year olds & mobile phone thieves it’s not cool.

Namechangedone · 22/03/2026 11:37

I would, I know my DD would appreciate it and look after it

TheBlueKoala · 22/03/2026 11:53

Grendel7 · 21/03/2026 21:31

He didnt notice it had north west on it and not north FACE ?

😂 He wouldn't have noticed no but it did say north face. He doesn't care at all about what he's wearing but since he's already so different by being autistic I try to make him fit in as much as I can superficially.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 22/03/2026 11:53

Mine both have North Face coats (as does every other child at their school by the look of it!) it’s all they wear, and they do wear them. However, I don’t think we’ve paid over around £150 there’s usually sales or deals on at JD and equivalent and and suggested make sure they have their names in them as they are all the same!

I don't think 'roadman' is a cool thing

Nope. Absolutely not.

I spent 30 for my DS north west coat on vinted. It was pristine and he had no idea it wasn't "new". Would never spend 240 £ on a coat unless it was a birthday/christmas gift and they wanted nothing else.

This!
£240 on a coat is absolutely insane!!
even if you have loads of money - our local
secondaries have a ban on all very visible logo’s on stuff tho which stops all this nonsense!!

Aiming4Optimistic · 22/03/2026 14:15

Nope - I am a teacher and have seen the way kids treat their coats and bags at school. I also think it would get stolen

Kay286 · 22/03/2026 14:16

Yes , I would and I have - though we do live in Canada and winters are brutal so a good quality coat is a must - though you can get cheaper . We just got one for 500 dollars - however only if it’s affordable , my kids are decent well behaved humans (they are) and appreciate it and look after it - but I do like them to have nicer higher end stuff

I’m glad her school doesn’t have these rules tbh though. The only thing they are strict is the footwear is black. They don’t care whether they wear trainers or not

I don't think many teens are concerned about the quality or longevity of the product.

No, but the person paying for it probably will be.

Parker231 · 22/03/2026 14:26

When we were in London I wouldn’t have bought it as a school coat as logos were banned. We’re now in Canada and NF coats aren’t warm enough so not something you see.

DogsInTheRiver · 22/03/2026 14:28

Yes. My kids wouldn’t want North Face, but we’ve bought them coats and other items of clothing that cost that much and more. Our children have always looked after their things well so we wouldn’t think twice of buying it if they wanted it.

We have a relative who always tells us that we spend ‘too much’ on our children, and ourselves, but it’s really no one else’s business.

Yeah tbh mine are very good at looking after their stuff. We are very much in the same boat. When we bought our new house I had it painted throughout in one neutral off white colour and then we used accent colour and painted feature walls etc. Everyone told me the dc would ruin the walls with handprints, spill things on the sofa. Well they don’t because they learn from us to look after things.
DD will put her coat in her bag when it’s not on her in school to ensure it stays safe.

No because everyone has them and it's the end of the season. Next year, they might all be wearing some other brand.

It may or may not be a current term. DS is at uni and used to use it when he was younger.
