A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Yes, just seen that thread. Some good questions, but I think we can guess how Reeves will respond. The usual waffle, probably claims of misogyny too.

I'm seeing a lot of threads about welfare and many posters have clearly had enough. Some posters trying to police these threads. Are we not allowed to discuss welfare now? How very dare anyone have an issue with the ballooning welfare bill eh! Its ridiculous how some think they can control what others think/say on here.

Yes there will always be those familiar name that try to police but I think it’s a bit like trying to stem a burst dam now, isn’t going to work.

Agree about Reeves she has never answered a straight question so not even sure why she’s asking for questions.

Yeah, seems a bit pointless doesn't it.

It will probably be reported and deleted if I link the thread, but its in Mumsnet Webchats - 'Post your questions to Rachel Reeves'.

Good grief. Just been reading other threads. 🤯

Thank God for this thread! 💙

Just listened to Kemi's speech and Q & A at the London Defence Conference. She was brilliant.

I hear you. Thankfully the Reeves thread is a bit better although she’ll dodge it all, gaslight and do the usual Labour nonsense lines.

Tg for this thread, some aren’t worth it.

Is it against rules to link to a thread?

No idea, but chief lurkers will probably try and report it for TAAT 🤷‍♂️

I do it quite often. It’s against the rules to post a link with the intention of encouraging a pile on. But that isn’t the case here.

Apparently the government has an issue with step children forming a relationship sexually and female labour MPs want it banned legally. first cousins no issues. Starmer sensibly refused because of this. He's been leaned on by a lobby of female MPs allegedly.

SapphireCasino · 11/04/2026 23:15

meanwhile in Ireland, it's all going on. Discontent is everywhere I guess.

strawberrybubblegum · 12/04/2026 09:21

Labour are such gaslighting liars.

They refuse to protect UK interests either domestically (by enforcing borders) or internationally (by keeping Chagos, or working with Israel on defence) - claiming they can't due to international law - but then won't do the absolute basics of publishing guidance on UK law, to protect women and children. All they do is roll over for the loudest, most aggressive pressure groups. They should be so ashamed of themselves.

I was just saying on FWR that I am beginning to wonder if Phillipson is dragging her feet because they are going to tinker with the EqA. Keep a close eye on leaks about the King’s speech (13th May).

CandidLurker · 12/04/2026 10:14

I’m probably very, very late to this but is the Chagos “deal” dead in the water? I wonder how much the UK has spent so far…

Given that they were all saying how 'proud' they were of the EA 2010 and that it didn't require amendment before the GE, that would be quite something. Standard Labour though (they didn't want sex to mean biological sex, so FWS has fucked their ability to use it opaquely).

SapphireCasino · 12/04/2026 11:41

I'm really understanding why some people don't bother voting.

I will vote in the local election

The next general election, I think remains to be seen.

With the Chagos deal, I would imagine Boris Johnson would have done a very similar deal

I think Sunak could probably find a way to make it less horrific

But in many ways, having a Tory government has not stopped us moving a lot to the left

The global influences are now such that saying "but UN" is now an answer to everything.

The information we have about the Chagos deal is probably only the tip of the iceberg and I do suspect there is some corruption involved here. But it's a chilling reminder of how global all of these problems and issues are.

I probably will vote, but it all feels incredibly hopeless. We've been going in a direction I don't like for a long time. The main thing is Labour will get us there faster, and the Greens will do it at warp speed.

Thinking that you can slow the decline is probably as good as it gets. How sad.

It looks close to dead but with Starmer / Labour saying they’ll keep going next year trying to get it through.

God knows why, just give up trying to spend billions in taxpayer funds without reason.

SapphireCasino · 12/04/2026 16:44

@EasternStandard will the UN drop it though? I don't think any UK politician will tell them to f off.

I thought it definitely couldn’t happen if the US said no, I recall Lammy saying that before they got all excited before the trip there. It’s a mess though so haven’t followed that closely.

It’s ridiculous they keep pushing on something so costly.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 12/04/2026 19:03

I see Streeting did the Sunday round on the TV.

I suppose there must always be something in it for politicians because they get to appear on the telly. And TBF Streeting is a good performer. But I can’t help thinking that Starmer has forced Streeting out in front of the cameras because he wants Streeting to have to answer for the present shit show and so damage his chances of challenging for the Labour leadership after 7 May.

If I were in Starmer’s cabinet I’d tell him to fuck off. He’s so obviously gone in a month, what’s to lose?

CruCru · 13/04/2026 08:47

Does anyone else find it peculiar that we hear so little from Yvette Cooper (foreign secretary) and Shabana Mahmood (Home Secretary)? It seems as though Reeves and Phillipson are endlessly in the news. Even Angela Rayner.

Yvette Cooper, in particular, is experienced at being in government. She had a cabinet role under Gordon Brown, a politician with a reputation for being genuinely serious. Why on earth doesn’t Starmer use her more? He’s endlessly getting on planes for overseas trips - so Cooper gets no airtime for her role.

It was that way with Lammy as well when he was Foreign Secretary.

TBH I think the answers are that, with Lammy/Cooper, Starmer uses international matters as a refuge from the horrors of his and his government’s appalling reputation at home. So he elbows out the FS. (Anyway, I really don’t think the voters see him as he wishfully sees himself - as some great diplomat and international mover and shaker. He just looks like he’s running away.)

And with Mahmood, she’s canny enough to see that the less she’s associated in the public mind with Starmer the better, so she’s keeping her head down.

SapphireCasino · 13/04/2026 10:04

I understand why he didn't use Lammy

but Cooper is a puzzle
