Here’s one from Matt to kick us off:

Labour isn't Working - Thread 28
EmeraldRoulette · 27/02/2026 12:11

Oh, I put this on the old thread, but are we here now? Do I need a big sign saying "you are here" 😂

I'm not impressed with Kemi's reaction to this situation

She needs to focus on getting the Tory party in order and not criticise everybody else. I don't like how she's been criticising Robert Jenrick either. Seems petty and spiteful. Much better to focus on what her party can actually do.

I think she needs to distance herself from the Boriswave and be very clear that it was a problem. It may be against etiquette or something but I think it would be really helpful.

Just checking in!

LlynTegid · 27/02/2026 13:09

One by-election is not a real test. The Senedd, Scottish Parliament and local elections on May 7th are the real ones.

Upstartled · 27/02/2026 13:20

Checking in, thanks @redange. Wonder what white rabbit will be pulled out of the spring statement hat at the tax payers expenses so that Labour can lick its D&G wounds?

There's been shenanigans in the senedd paying 92k to remove a non Welsh speaking person. In a very underhanded way. That's actually been attacked by Drakeford. When 80% of the population don't speak it.

Gawd knows whether the general population will clock it though

I agree that the locals will be a better test of general support for the parties. But this was a calamitous loss for Labour. It’s not so much that the other parties’ fortunes can be told from it, because there are too many variables and demographic issues.

But it was a very safe Labour seat in which political loyalty to Labour evaporated. So many people were willing to vote for a bonkers outfit like the Greens, rather than Labour, that Labour is now staring at wipe out.

EasternStandard · 27/02/2026 13:39

The May elections will be the next test. And it might not be the Greens delivering it. I’d say more likely to be Reform giving Starmer another bloody nose.

Some will flail on here with blame and excuses but it’s Labour losing votes.

Yes, Kemi needs to stop taking potshots at Starmer, (PMQs excepted, natch):

(a) because he's a ridiculously easy target, and
(b) quiet dignity speaks volumes.

Well Labour are going to lurch to the left now apparently so will probably be another tax hike. If they’re going to lurch to the left they had better get on with it - they must realise they have just three years left.

Edited

I doubt they could move decisively left without a massive and damaging internal fight. A civil war probably.

Good, well I hope it causes all manner of strife.

Upstartled · 27/02/2026 14:03

Maybe they'll put a bit of jam on that soggy toast and bring it up in every single conversation?

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 27/02/2026 17:33

There’s a rather odd phenomenon taking hold on the left after this by-election where left supporters trumpet the outcome as being against racism, presumably because Reform failed to take the seat. There’s lots on X saying this.

But they seem unable to grasp that obsession with Gaza is wrapped up with antisemitism. It’s like the Corbyn years: “we’re super-duper anti-racists, but we hate Jews.” The Greens winning was probably the most racist outcome there could have been. And I say that as someone who finds Reform very distasteful.

LupaMoonhowl · 27/02/2026 17:45

It really is, there are left wing posters on MN performing all kind of contortions right now that make no sense whatsoever.

The Left's blindness about anti-semitism is so weird - completely internally inconsistent. But I find many parts of a Leftist world-view incomprehensible.
