A Facebook friend is really giving me the ick over her constant use of the word ‘ cuppa ‘ . I have developed an unreasonable hatred of it .

how do you take your cuppa

Its cup of tea

Ahhh just ahhh

Pixie2015 · 21/03/2026 18:47

Love a coffee - hate a “brew”

ChocolateBasket · 21/03/2026 18:53

I assume the OP is not from the North.

Gingerwarthog · 21/03/2026 19:01

Yes - hate ‘cuppa’, ‘food noise’, ‘lush’ ‘picky bits’ and ‘holibobs’, also ‘Jean’ for jeans and ‘lip’ as in ‘a red lip’ instead of red lipstick.

@Pineneedlesincarpet

As I said, I don't think I was rude or unkind in anything I said.

Someone who perhaps is dyslexic or not brilliantly educated makes a point which is dismissed or mocked for poor grammar or spelling by someone who disagrees politically with them. Not great.

I don't frequent the politics boards and am certainly not tempted to after hearing such things happen there.

Hopefully, we can both agree to post in a manner we each feel is acceptable and within guidelines.

The original post has been deleted by Mn which is good.

dailyconniptions · 21/03/2026 19:11

'Hating on' is awful. Just hating will do.
The word cuppa is awful.

Fair enough.
Sadly, nobody now can make their own judgement but I know I was neither rude nor unkind.
I'm sorry I put you to the trouble of contacting the mods and hope you feel better now.
I would take it as a kindness if you didn't @ me again just to tell me a post of mine has gone.
I presume I'd find out soon enough and it's a nuisance to have to turn the @ facility on and off.

carnivalcat · 21/03/2026 19:19

I’m not a fan either. My friend calls it a brew but spells it “bru”. Terrible all round.

Yorkies for Yorkshire puddings. See it on here all the time and can't bear it! Also faux casual cooking words- as in "then you can just pop it in the slow cooker/sling it in the oven". Bleugh

Thank you. Yorkies was my first thought when I read the OP. Im from Ilkley in Yorkshire and we've always always called them 'Yorkshires'. My mum did, my dad did and all my grandparents did. A Yorkie is a small long haired terrier.

Lilacspring · 21/03/2026 19:24

I`m hating on "my bad"🙄

MaddestGranny · 21/03/2026 19:24

Superfurryhamster · 21/03/2026 07:29

I feel similarly about ‘biccie’ - you’re not saving any time so just say biscuit

agree with pp regarding brew.

I'm bothered by the spelling. Surely it should be "bickie" not "biccie" and, while I'm at it, it should be "prezzie/prezzy" not "pressie".

I've never knowingly uttered the word "cuppa", it's horrible.

I WISH people wouldn't always use "grab" to mean: get; obtain; have; take. It's the implication that we're all entitled to be "grabby". To me it's a bit of linguistic evidence of what used to be called "the decline of civility".
Mind you, I am old and incorrigibly opinionated.

Gingerwarthog · 21/03/2026 19:26

Also ‘a tasty cup of coffee’ or a ‘delicious coffee’. Wrong.

MaddestGranny · 21/03/2026 19:27

Pineneedlesincarpet · 21/03/2026 15:51

Well i was just chipping in and sticking up for the PP as it's nice not to correct other people's spelling and grammar on Chat.

Pedant's Corner on the other hand....

Ooo! Is there a Pedant's Corner? Where is it? I may be on the brink of finding my tribe.

Biccie and brekkie for me! 🤢

Malasana · 21/03/2026 08:36

I refer to cocktails as cocky-ts.
I’m so sorry 🤣

Love it

Sometimessmiling · 21/03/2026 19:47

People who can't say it cants spell drawers
It makes me so bloody upset. Oh and agree with most things here but a cuppa I can tolerate

Carpedimum · 21/03/2026 19:56

I cannot abide ‘Hun’ and the usually simpering voice of the person saying it.

Monty27 · 21/03/2026 20:00

@hattie43 "Hating on" is giving me "the ick." (closes door on the way out).

It's actually called Pedants Corner! Currently discussing clique being pronounced as click. People are OUTRAGED.

I was actually referring to the initial post by a PP which I noticed had been deleted. The one with the first criticism of the punctuation. It wasn't sent by you.

I think MN only delete posts that in their view breach their guidelines. So if they have deleted yours that would be the reason.

Do turn the @ off if you feel I have been unhelpful.

GlassHalfFullplease · 21/03/2026 07:34

Agree with them all, also:

Hubby
Wifey
Going on my/our "hollies/holibobs."

It sounds like an overgrown toddler doesn't it.

There are so many more as well, but my mind has gone blank this morning.

Edited

Totally agree about hubby. Makes my toes curl

Tuesdayschild50 · 21/03/2026 20:35

Cuppa is better than brew ..

Tuesdayschild50 · 21/03/2026 20:36

The ick phrase pisses me right off never mind cuppa or brew.

Calliopespa · 21/03/2026 20:38

In our house it's a "Tuppa Tea" after one of my siblings couldn't say "cup of tea."

I think that's quite sweet.

LarsenBiceshelf · 21/03/2026 20:42

I've got an irrational, visceral hatred of the word 'spud'. It's a potato, ffs.
