I really dislike the phrase 'hating on', where just 'hating' would do.

This. I would assume it's American I've never heard it used here.

anon666 · 21/03/2026 20:44

Ugh, I hear you. The word ick was invented for this.

Someone used hun on me yesterday and I can't shake it off. It was meant kindly, too.

Cariadm · 21/03/2026 20:51

On a slightly different trajectory but for me still highly annoying and a massive 'ick' promoter! I want to scream and ask them if they are still 6 years old every time I hear an adult use the word 'tummy' instead of stomach!! 😱
This childish term is sadly used everywhere, it's even in the NHS website! The worst is when I hear a grown man say 'tummy' on the media or I read it in an article or very often in a book!! 🙄

PersephoneParlormaid · 21/03/2026 07:16

No, it’s a brew.

Noooo. That's even worse. Urrgh. (shudders)

Offherrockingchair · 21/03/2026 07:25

When MIL says ‘sarnie’ it turns my stomach.

I agree, the only thing worse than a sarnie is a sando.. Boak.

PersephoneParlormaid · 21/03/2026 07:16

No, it’s a brew.

Northern for cuppa is brew.

Grendel7 · 21/03/2026 21:03

hattie43 · 21/03/2026 07:21

Now brew is fine , there’s just something about cuppa I hate

Brew is not fine either. Nor is "ick"

LaMarschallin · 21/03/2026 07:57

Also hate "bubba" - they often grow up into a "kiddo". Cf "pupper" and "doggo".
Drinks-wise, I've posted elsewhere today that I don’t like "a wine" or "a few wines" whereas "a gin" or "a few beers" sound fine to me.
Unlike a PP, I don't mind "a coffee" but dislike "a tea".
Never use "cuppa" or "brew".

Oh my God, are you me? I am exactly the same with all those things. I don't know why 'a coffee' or 'a beer' is fine but a wine or a tea isn't, but IT JUST ISN'T.

Oh I’m a cuppa girl sorry! Can’t say I use it on Facebook but would ask someone if they fancied meeting for a cuppa. Not sure if it’s a Yorkshire thing?

Also tell the kids were having Spag Bol, mainly because I can’t spell it (or maybe I’m common from the tones of this post?).

There are a few others on the post that I hate though (not hate on, just hate 😉).

Yorkshire thing would be a brew. For some reason only they know.

MoonWoman69 · 21/03/2026 21:42

Brew here! Don't mind cuppa but I rarely use the word.
I also hate bubba and little man!
And for some reason, only in Yorkshire I've noticed, people say solt instead of sold. Oh and mine stew, instead of mind you! It's only been a thing in recent years. I'm Yorkshire born and bred and never heard this growing up! It makes me want to tear my hair out!

suburburban · 21/03/2026 21:43

Hate it too

speak properly I think

Empress13 · 21/03/2026 22:05

Picky bits ….. 🤢

Although an apostrophe can indicate a missing letter or letters so cuppa's (being short for cups of tea) may not be 100% wrong.

Not sure what you mean. What letter could be missing?

Cuppa tea lass? tis life butbyeah, i hate
the word lunch, southerners introduced that o into the north east a few years back, insteada dina..drives me mad ❤️

I love that use of dinner for lunch. (We have dinner ladies at school and eat in the dinner hall…but always call it lunch. Never dinner.)

It always makes me think of something a bit better than lunch though. Would a sandwich, for example, still be considered “dinner”?

I always think of dinner being more of a meat and two veg type of thing. Which I would love to eat at lunchtime.

beautifuldaytosavelives · 21/03/2026 23:05

I hate cuppa. Awful. Brew is just as bad.

Fingalscave · 21/03/2026 23:09

I hate cuppa, brew, sarnie, butty and hating on.

YelramBob · 21/03/2026 23:29

Can I just drop in 'Slimmers World''? My friend has been going to Slimming World (a whole other story) for years but she keeps calling it Slimmers World. I want to punch her in the face every time she says it.

I know where to put the apostrophe BTW 😅

mamaandbabas · 21/03/2026 23:38

But spaghetti bolognese is such a mouthful to say😆

RubyTuesdayFTO · 21/03/2026 23:41

Brew isn’t used in this particular part of Yorkshire it’s cuppa or mashing - love em both.

I hate “playdate” on a visceral level. Any Americanisms - sneakers, bangs, backpack, season (series) make my teeth itch with rage.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 22/03/2026 00:57

Cuppa has been around for decades and is people used to say. Fancy a cup of cha?

I.hate dinner instead of tea. And so called master bedroom. You know when a room is about 4 by 4 metres. It is so pretentious.

.And when visiting friends and relatives are described as guests and being entertained. It is so Jane Austen.

canuckup · 22/03/2026 01:12

Hating in is just awful

Cuppa rocks 🫵

What’s wrong with someone enjoying a cuppa with a moist slice of cake while sitting in their new slacks?

Shitmonger · 22/03/2026 02:44

I really dislike cuppa as well. And it definitely has nothing to do with the fact that I was once punished for telling my brother to have a “cuppa shut the fuck up.”

FantasyFoodhall · 22/03/2026 04:04

My neighbour always says ‘wine o’clock’ and honestly I hate her every time, which is a
shame (or a ‘me problem, to use another hideous expression) as she is very nice otherwise. Although they do also have ‘cheeky soups’ for lunch.

piscofrisco · 22/03/2026 04:42

It’s my most hated word.
