A Facebook friend is really giving me the ick over her constant use of the word ‘ cuppa ‘ . I have developed an unreasonable hatred of it .

who fancies coming over for a cuppa
where’s the best place in town for a cuppa
I drink at least 6 cuppa’s a day
how do you take your cuppa

Its cup of tea

Ahhh just ahhh

It’s a cuppy where I am. 😁

One I hate is dippy egg. Soft-boiled egg or just say egg and soldiers because if you have soldiers you know they’re for a soft yolk. The word “dippy” just makes me think of Right Said Fred and I hate when that song gets stuck in my head. 🙈

Oh yes..dippy egg is so infantile. I say boiled egg and soldiers and that's the correct and civilised way.

Poppy61 · 21/03/2026 14:22

Cuppa and brew are traditional and interchangeable. Long may they continue

BananaSkinShoes · 21/03/2026 14:33

Can we add the vomit inducing ‘roasties’ and ‘yorkies’? Intolerable.

SuperGreatSmashing · 21/03/2026 15:11

I silently scream when I read 'brekkie'

Giggorata · 21/03/2026 15:16

I didn’t realise that I was so intolerant, but here I am, agreeing with almost everything on here.
I'll just add “take” as the verb used for having a bath or shower. I'd almost rather have “jump”.

Fancy a cuppa! 😁

youbizarrehorse · 21/03/2026 15:25

Weirdly we don’t have a short version of cup of tea in NI. You might hear ‘wee drop o’ tay’ from older folk, but that’s obviously longer. In our house we make a T shape with our hands to ask if anyone wants a cup of tea or alternatively as a request for a cup to be made. Saves time and gets that kettle on sharpish🤣

My pet ate is veggie. I hate it for describing both vegetables and vegetarians. I hate most words being shortened to be honest.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 21/03/2026 15:32

Anyone who says A wine.
No, you may not have “a wine”.
Absolutely no wine for these people.

1000StrawberryLollies · 21/03/2026 15:45

I'm not a fan of 'cuppa' or 'brew', but 'hating on' is worse!

Well i was just chipping in and sticking up for the PP as it's nice not to correct other people's spelling and grammar on Chat.

Pedant's Corner on the other hand....

IdaGlossop · 21/03/2026 15:54

Lots already mentioned trigger me, including trigger. Associating a minor irritation with major trauma denotes a feeble brain. This thread has made me realise that verbs also figure on my list, not only nouns. The biggest culprits are:

'Jump on a call' (mental image: a person in lycra long-jumping onto a laptop keyboard
'Slide into your DMs' (no need to be sneaky about it)
'Pop it in the frfreezer already mentioned; too '50s housewife, even though freezers weren't around then)
'Grab a coffee' (rude; we teach our children not to grab)

Oblivionnnnn · 21/03/2026 16:06

My current top hatred is ‘grown ass’.

Just say ‘grown’. The word ass is an irrelevancy and makes whoever said it sound dumb as all fuck.

Agree with most of these but for me the worst word is panties it make me squirm

igelkott2026 · 21/03/2026 17:12

queenofnorthsheen · 21/03/2026 09:35

I hate “toileting” and “parenting”- they’re nouns, why have we turned them into verbs?!

Totally agree with parenting. I think it's because British parents (it is a peculiarly British thing I think) think they "parent" with such talent and wisdom that they produce perfect children. It's something they do rather than something they are.

Instead of realising that their kids are a product of their genes and grow up in spite of their "parenting" not because of it.

I don't like any of the twee expressions like hollibobs, famalam etc, or shortenings like rads instead of radiators, or Americanisms like reach out and likely will instead of it is likely to.

And I hate "on" gifting as a verb too. It's nearly always obvious from the context that you gave it as a present. And if not, you can say "I gave my mum flowers as a present".

igelkott2026 · 21/03/2026 17:13

Oh and grabbing a coffee, or having a "cheeky" wine. Why is it cheeky?

Why do I have to " jump" on a call when I am sitting at my desk?

I think I am too literal :)

NewGirlInTown · 21/03/2026 17:24

Hate ‘brew’. Hate ‘cuppa’. It’s a cup of tea. 🙄

I think MN have a policy of encouarging pisters nkt to correkt other people's posts re seplling, grmar or punkchewation. On the basis it is either rude, unkind, smug or reflects badly on the corrector (obviously).

I didn't think they were keen on personal attacks either.

I don't think I've been rude or unkind in anything I've said.
I wasn't smug about my use of English previously - it just seemed normal to me.
Perhaps I am a bit now.

The policy of not correcting other people's posts for grammar, punctuation, spelling etc. I'm just assuming you weren't aware of the MN policy, rather than me attacking you. And now you know! Which is good.

It's worse on the politics board TBF. Someone who perhaps is dyslexic or not brilliantly educated makes a point which is dismissed or mocked for poor grammar or spelling by someone who disagrees politically with them. Not great. Needs to be stamped out IMO.

Rollergirl79 · 21/03/2026 18:26

I agree! Also hate the word "brew" aswell though. "Pots" instead of potatoes is another one as well as "picky bits".

GlobalTravellerbutespeciallyBognor · 21/03/2026 18:27

Haha, OP - I got it.
(You have deliberately written a message containing a few expressions and mistakes that people often hate.)

iceberg52 · 21/03/2026 18:32

I feel inexplicably irritated when someone starts talking about 'food noise'.

LaMarschallin · 21/03/2026 18:35

As I said, I don't think I was rude or unkind in anything I said.

Someone who perhaps is dyslexic or not brilliantly educated makes a point which is dismissed or mocked for poor grammar or spelling by someone who disagrees politically with them. Not great.

I don't frequent the politics boards and am certainly not tempted to after hearing such things happen there.

Hopefully, we can both agree to post in a manner we each feel is acceptable and within guidelines.
