Cuppa has been around for decades and is people used to say. Fancy a cup of cha?

I.hate dinner instead of tea. And so called master bedroom. You know when a room is about 4 by 4 metres. It is so pretentious.

.And when visiting friends and relatives are described as guests and being entertained. It is so Jane Austen.

Estate agents seem to have switched to using ‘principal suite’ now which is even worse!

Thank you for this thread, it’s making me smile

MoonWoman69 · 22/03/2026 06:58

Just had a thought which made me laugh this morning, catching up on this thread.
If everyone knocked all this slang on the head, we'd all be talking like everyone in A Brief Encounter! (If you haven't seen it, it's an old British black and white film, where the speech is all very proper! And to add, one of my favourite films!)
Not sure how that would sound coming from the mouths of some of the people I know! 🤣

Moii · 22/03/2026 07:04

Not a term I've heard recently, but get it. I'm like like with 'hubby'

LaMarschallin · 22/03/2026 08:52

ohtobethin · 21/03/2026 22:55

Not sure what you mean. What letter could be missing?

There isn't one missing. You were (if I remember your post correctly) quite right. "Cuppa" is an accepted word these days (whether or not people wish to use it; I don't) - it's certainly in my Collins dictionary and "cuppa's" as a plural of "cuppa" is 100% wrong.

Full disclosure, I am a slightly savage beast, I make my herbal tea in a coffee pot, and drink it cool or cold.

So hate on me.

If you must.

And I make my cup of tea with loose leaves in a cafetière. Heathen that I am!

To wind me up say “of”instead of “have”

Shodan · 22/03/2026 09:45

The only correct way to pluralise cuppa, imo, would be cupsa. Perhaps a whole new word could evolve: "Would you like to come round for cupsatee?"

As an aside, and in reference to a PP's clear dislike of the word- moist is one of my most favourite words ever. I think I like it even more because most people seem to loathe it.

That's clever!

That's an interesting thought.
It makes me think of people who pluralise "mother-in-law" as "mother-in-laws". Some probably decorate the s with an apostrophe.

I'm fairly indifferent to "moist". It certainly has its uses but it's one of those words that I think some people feel they should dislike, along with "gusset" and "panties".
Then again, to me the "F word" is "fart"; I really try to avoid saying it, whereas the occasional "fuck" doesn't feel so unpleasant to say.

Agree with them all, also:

Hubby
Wifey
Going on my/our "hollies/holibobs."

It sounds like an overgrown toddler doesn't it.

There are so many more as well, but my mind has gone blank this morning.

All these plus ‘Peeps’

It is corporate talk that makes me cringe, such "signposting", "reaching out", "ring-fencing", "road map" or "dashboard" of interventions.....

How do you know its tea though ? I ask people if they want a cuppa or a brew but that could also be coffee .

I’m ‘hating on’ the misuse of apostrophes.

Muffinmam · 22/03/2026 10:51

I hate when people write posts on mumsnet and use unnecessary exclamation marks.

Years ago someone made a post about how they were eating a chocolate orange and people responded “Yum!” And it really bothered me.

Emmz1510 · 22/03/2026 10:59

I’m not a fan of infantalisation of any word really, especially if it’s food. Some people have mentioned these already but yes cuppa, biccy, sarnie, choccy, they all give me the ick. Grow up. I never used to use any kind of ‘baby talk’ with my daughter when she was tiny because I hate it, so no ‘bobo’, ‘bit bits’ (horrid Scottish term for baby food’), ‘num nums’, ‘dum dums’, ‘blankys’, ‘sleepies’ or goo goo gagas in our house! My daughter was speaking full sentences at 20 months.

Oh yes! You can add ‘moving forward…’ to that list of nonsense…

I feel the same about the word brekkie

Pclou67 · 22/03/2026 11:09

This made me smile and I know it was a light hearted post, but maybe not so much the word you dislike but the person using it?. I’d just mute or remove her if it winds you up.

ClovisWrites · 22/03/2026 14:21

Cuppa, veggies, Chrimbo, rellies, spuds… talk like a grown-up FFS.

Usernamenotav · 22/03/2026 15:01

Eurgh, I agree. It's up there with 'Hubby' literally makes me sick 🤮

Completely agree. It’s not even shorter than saying ‘husband’, still two syllables, just infantile language.

I've got an irrational, visceral hatred of the word 'spud'. It's a potato, ffs.

You would hate this place then.

I’m hating on the word ‘ cuppa ‘.

anyone remember Spud you like from the 80s

a relative says Tato which drives me insane

MildlyAnnoyed · 22/03/2026 17:37

I’m not really bothered about ’cuppa’ but I can’t stand people saying ‘crips’ instead of ‘crisps’.
