Ayatollah reported killed - not confirmed

Surely this can only be a good thing if that tyrant is no more. However hopefully it won't lead to months/years of fighting and bloodshed

Killing a nation's head of state in an attack with little or no justification in international law is an atrocity. Imagine if it was the other way around and Trump had been bombed to death by Iran in the White House?

The wickedness of the leader in either case does nothing to mitigate the terrifying illegality of it, its horrible potential for destabilisation.

And of course even the murder of a head of state pales against the other story on the front pages today -- the murder of at least 100 schoolgirls who had the misfortune to attend a school next to a revolutionary guard barracks. (Confirmed by Reuters although still not fully verified.)

If the UK does as much as provide a runway for the US military in this bloodshed, our leaders should be hounded for war crimes.

I expect the terror threat to be ramped up here .
What is left of the power base in Iran has said that consider Iran to be at war with ‘the Whole of Europe’.

It's absolutely reasonable to expect attacks across Europe and further. We have invited lots of dangerous people in and refusedd to listen to warnings even from their own people.

I should point out that out that if Iran does launch any terrorist attacks in the UK, then in the words of the Green Party, this will be because of divisions sown by the Reform Party and not the actions of the Iranian State.

Agree that so many posters sound like they will welcome if it all fails, purely because it was run by people they dispise.

Agree. Their hate for America and Israel is greater than their compassion for the Iranians who are now free from the oppression of a very evil regime.

Not confirmed by Reuters:

"at least 40 people were killed in an Israeli airstrike, state media said. Reuters could not independently confirm the reports."

Absolute ridiculous comment. I’ve heard it all now - apparently Reform will now be responsible for future attacks on the UK from Iran. Give over…..

TheFilliesWillRiseAgain · 01/03/2026 08:49

The US provided a fact sheet of some of the claims the Iranian regime have made in the last 24 hours. Very much Comical Ali vibes about what the Iranians have been saying.

Apparently it's allowed in Islam to lie when you're at war

Well not yet. Not yet sadly. The regime will still fight from what they said before to people.
But hopefully soon!

Viviennemary · 01/03/2026 08:51

Apparently Jeremy Corbyn is attending a pro Iran rally. What is wrong with these people. But Iranians living in other countries have been celebrating the downfall of that despicable tyrant.

The guardian says that the footage of the school has been confirmed by reuters, as well as by a Persian-language fact-checking service. I wasn't quite right in my previous post because I think I said that the story had been confirmed; in fact it was the authenticity of the video. I'm not sure what space exists for the footage to be authentic but not the story, but you are right that we should speak with caution to try not to get ahead of verified facts.

Livelovebehappy · 01/03/2026 08:54

The man is unhinged. And there but for the grace of God, if he had won the GE against Boris he could have been our PM and done untold damage to the UK which we would all have still have been experiencing the repercussions from today. Scary thought…..

It was few months ago when pro palestine protest had Ayatollah's picture with " right side of history". So no surprise

At least they are all showing themselves for the terrorist sympathisers that they are and voters who have been so far hoodwinked by the left takeover may have their eyes opened. I live in hope.

Not verified yet, but very sadly there are always going to be innocent deaths when trying to wrestle with evil regimes for the good of the people.

International law has had 50 years to free Iranians of this monstrous, murderous regime. It has wrung its hands and tolerated countless murders, including many members of my DH’s family. Whatever you think of Gaza, Netanyahu and Mossad’s intelligence has done the world a great service, both yesterday and in their targeting of successive IRGC leaders in preceding weeks.

Corbyn’s actions are not exactly a surprise given his Islamist sympathies and the fact that he’s a fucking clown show. 🤡

Iranian regime is too stable to fall down because od Ayatollah's death only.it has had decades to settle and has multiple armed forces structures to support it. I am really symphatetic towards Iranians - I've visited the country and have friend there, but I am not convinced this will change anything. (And Israel does not care what kind of pwer rules over Iran, they just want it weak, it's not some grand battle for freedom).

lljkk · 01/03/2026 09:12

@Vinvertebrate , I think what you're saying is that your DH is happy to revel in revenge feelings. Doesn't need to think about the situtation further.

BBC World Service had excellent commentators on today (Newsday programme) talking about how regime change has never succeeded simply due to air strikes, also the USA is following a decapitation strategy, not actually a regime Change strategy, in Iran or Venezuela etc.

I am thinking of Hydra, cut off one head & 3 sprout in its place. Decapitation doesn't kill the Hydra, if anything, Hydra becomes more dangerous.

I greatly hope my cynicism is misplaced.

I agree with your post. I am very on the fence and wait and see this morning. I think everyone is losing their heads because one man is dead. Iran has prepared for this. They have a succession and I fear Iranians lives are just about to get worse and the region destabilised which ultimately will affect us in the west financially too. I also hope I am wrong of course.

I think Trump and BN are as dangerous as the Ayatollah personally.

Edited

But I’m assuming (hoping) that America and Israel have something in place to counter any potential new incoming clone of the Ayatollah who has just been killed. Everything so far seems to have been done with military precision, and I can’t imagine thought hasn’t been given to what’s now going to happen. The Regime has also had a lot of their military bases destroyed, so things aren’t going to be stable for them in the immediate aftermath.

I think this is pretty offensive. Do you think the people are stupid and unaware of what could happen in the future? perhaps they are just celebrating in the moment & what it means to them?

There really is no comparison between the regimes of Iran and America/Israel. If I was an Iranian I know whose rule I would prefer to live under out of the three.
