Surely this can only be a good thing if that tyrant is no more. However hopefully it won't lead to months/years of fighting and bloodshed

He really is an incompetent fool. Shot himself in both feet now.

I’ve just been reading coverage of this. I really can’t see Starmer’s logic in ‘defensive’ strikes by the US against Iranian missile sites from British bases. Attacking these sites is what the US has been doing from the outset. We’re just permitting use later. Quite how a late start makes everything legal when it supposedly was illegal before is baffling. (Not that I think there’s any reality in international law and its ‘courts’.)

But as I think Starmer should have had the spine to let the US use our bases in the first place, crack on.

Edited

He justified it on the basis they are attacking western civilians in hotels and airports. What a tosser he is. Anyway within 45 minutes of his lily livered patronising speech they have bombed RAF Akrotiri so we’ll see if he changes his mind about strikes again.

LunaDeBallona · 01/03/2026 23:27

@PinkTonic
Weve scrambled Typhoon fighters and a refuelling plane from RAF Akrotiri- presumably because of the explosion there.
Praying our boys are ok.

I fully expect out terror threat to go through the roof.
God knows how many terrorists who are financed by Iran have made their way here after flinging their phones/documents into the channel.
Fancy putting men up in hotels in residential areas so they can join up their sleeper cells in order to attack us. We are so fucking stupid.
Theres going to be trouble here -mark my words.

That’s funny, I’m going to pinch that.

Fuck - Hezbollah firing on Israel

Is it certain that Akrotiri’s been hit? There’s not a lot of coverage of it.

There has been an explosion. Not saying it’s been hit with a rocket. I’m concerned about what that means - could it be sabotage? Terrorism?

um, to paraphrase the previous convo (from memory):
vinvert: My DH is super happy about the Ayatollah being killed.
Me: How does your DH think Ayaltollah's death will make things better for ordinary Iranians?
vinvert: DH reckons the bastard deserved to be murdered.
Me: (that doesn;t seem like answer to my question, but I suppose what I should hear is) the DH likes having revenge

I was trying to be factual in my understanding. Not critical, just factual.

You’ve omitted a few points, like FIL being forced into hiding, his brother being murdered by the regime, wealth confiscated, SIL being arrested for unIslamic dress. Of course he’s fucking delighted, along with every member of his extended family and of the diaspora and Jewish community in London by the looks of it. And I’m delighted for them.

The status quo for “ordinary Iranians” was not peace and harmony. It was fear, oppression and brutally enforced Sharia law. It was containment, not contentment. In the context of a highly educated and quite “secular” majority who rather liked their pre-79 lives, I hope and expect things to improve for them. There are 1 or 2% of the population who support the regime and you’re absolutely correct that it will be difficult to reconcile extremists with a functioning democracy, if that’s the aim - and we can’t yet say what change will come. It’s not some sort of culturally relativist crime to think that it’s high time the grown-ups were in charge instead of the Islamist wingnuts. But objectively, the loss of a terrorist funding, antisemitic dictator who loved nothing more than a bit of femicide is not something to wring one’s hands over. Good riddance, but let’s also let Israel finish the job (🙏).

My Iranian friend says that also people who joined the demosntrations against the Shah and supported the revolution originally never wanted the moster that was created. They are entirely capable of recognizing the massive issues with the Shah's rule AND still wanting to be rid of this despotic, murderous and tyrannical regime that has not only bourhgt Iran to its knees but also destroyed coutnries around.

I have another friend with a Syiran husband (sunni Muslim). He has no love for Israel but, my god, he hates the Iranian regime so much for what they did in Syria that he wants Israel to win here.

ThereAreOnlyShadesOfGrey · 02/03/2026 04:50

regime is still intact - the coming days will show if it can hold out www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2lgvg5rl1o The regime remains in tact It’s naive to think that things will just change.

And no. Saying that does not mean someone is pro Iran as people keep insisting. It means people are realists.

Any change now has to come from within. But it also needs to be remembered that even if there is change, we have no idea what, if anything, this will mean for women. We all know the stance of most Muslim countries on women’s rights.
