Something woo happened tonight.

As the title suggests, and I'm not sure what to think of it, so opinions welcome.
Tonight whilst my daughter (3) was in the living room, she came running up to me in the kitchen and asked me what that noise was in her ear as it wasn't daddy. I asked her what she meant, and she said something said (made said sound) in her ear, and what was it as it wasn't daddy. I thought it was a toy on the sofa so I turned it off. A few minutes later she came running back up to me in the kitchen again and said it happened again, who was it because it isn't daddy (he was upstairs asleep). So, I just turned the tv off and we went to bed.

Now, when I have been in the house alone sometimes I hear sounds or spoken words, but mistook this for being tired, as I'm often up late doing my uni work. I also sometimes feel cold brushes of air, or really loud bangs upstairs, like something has fallen off a wall or something, each time I've gone upstairs to check and nothing is out of place or has fallen. I'm only questioning all of this now because of what my 3 year old told me tonight. I do believe she wouldn't make this up, she was genuinely frightened as to who made the spoken sound in her ear. She was adamant something said something in her ear.

We live in a new build, first occupants, so not haunted. Also no one has died recently.
What do you think?

Love a bit of woo!
Also love neuroscience and all that.

Dont amplify your daughter's concern. Distract and carry on with something else.
(And keep notes in your diary)
See how it unfolds.

MissyPants · 24/02/2026 11:16

Some interesting replies, nothing further has happened, but I'm not expecting it to as I'm not necessarily pointing at woo as the cause.
I do buy a lot of things from charity shops, pictures, ornaments, toys etc. Only saying this as someone suggested material objects.
I am in the UK yes.

Check your carbon monoxide levels and let in some fresh air

Came here to say this.

The range of sounds one can hear starts to decline after teenage years. She may be picking things up outside of your hearing range. A car radio outside, a neighbour with a window open, for example - wind strength and direction also impacts sound waves so there may be a simple explanation.

There may be a sensible, plausible explanation.

Or it could be ‘bad energy’, cursed tribal masks, the demonic realm, ancient burial grounds, children’s sensitivity to spirits or, of course, the ghosts of medieval monks.

Hmmm. One to ponder.

Oh for heavens sake, if you don’t know anything about the psychology behind these things don’t bother.

Maybe look into spiritual systems and how they form. The 19th century occultists discussed this in depth is you’re looking for a starting point.

You clearly have nothing to add here do you?

Ghosts don’t have a psychology. HTH.

would you say that to followers of other religions?

I DARE them to. They won't though. Wink

Suzypoo10 · 24/02/2026 14:38

There is a development near where I live, some are new builds some are Victorian which have been totally refurbished and they are lovely. However it was built on the site of the old county asylum and so many people have complained of weird things happening, and a lot of people move out very quickly. Also, people who were born and bred in the area totally refuse to live there.

Probably best to not engage. I have stopped.

I really don't know what people get out of shitting all over other peoples beliefs. They must be getting a dopamine hit from it or something, because they seem to LOVE doing it. it's bizarre. I NEVER attack or mock people who don't believe, yet the non-believers are all over this thread telling us believers how WRONG we all are, amongst a mulitude of insults and LOLing!

Like I said before, as if we are all going to dispense with our lifelong beliefs, purely because some random on the internet says it's all bollocks.

Behave! 😆

I love uncanny and woo in general fascinates me, but I did suspect that poor man had some serious mental health issues probably triggered by trauma.

Thing is though, lots of other people saw this 'shadow man' too. Not just him.

I just conclude their esteem is so low they think that by telling people their “beliefs” are wrong, despite having zero proof that they are wrong, they somehow feel superior.,in reality, they aren’t bright enough to understand how reality is constructed

Yes, I know what you mean. But there was just something about his demeanor. I'm not criticising him. I felt a great deal of sympathy for him because he'd experience such awful loss while young.

We are surrounded by strange noises all the time.

It's very easy to convince yourself something is there that isn't.

I'm at home alone. However...

I can hear a neighbour grunting somewhere
A vibrating sound (probably someone's alarm or phone)
The crackling of bubbles in the pipes
A plastic bag of clothes falling over in the bedroom
The daemon sultan Azathoth smacking its chops and capering
The wood in the floor tiles expanding
Someone shutting a ramch sliding door somewhere
Vague traffic sounds

It's nothing to worry about.

The daemon sultan Azathoth smacking its chops and capering

Dying 😂

I once experienced the “something unexplained falling” in my old house. This house had a wooden floor where the stairs started. Immediately at the top of the stairs was our bedroom door, which we always left open at night because we had a toddler and wanted to hear her if she called out in the night. It was about 11pm and dh and I had just got into bed and we whispering quietly together. At the bottom of the stairs we heard a thud and a rustle, as if something heavy in a plastic bag had fallen onto the wooden floor. Because of the bedroom door being open and it only being at the bottom of the stairs, the noise was loud and clear. We both thought the cat (who is shut in the kitchen at night) had escaped the kitchen and knocked something off the table in the hall. I went downstairs to look…there was not a thing out of place, no bag, nothing on the floor, and the cat was asleep in her bed behind a closed door. Both dh and I heard the sound as clear as day. A number of other things happened in that house over the following year that we couldn’t explain, and then it stopped as suddenly as it started.

So I’m of no help to you, OP, but I can relate.

I had a similar experience where things happened suddenly but stopped entirely.
All in the kitchen. A few occasions I heard plates or cutlery move/jingle that I'd left on the side to wash up. I assumed the cat must have been in when I thought she was out. No cat in sight and was indeed outside.
Another time a week or so later the oven timer switched itself off. I'd set it but the oven doesn't continue until you actively press a button once to turn the timer off, and again to start the oven again. On this occasion the oven continued. Thought maybe it was a fault. I'd told my partner about these things happening but he rolled his eyes until one evening we were sat watching a film and the extractor fan turned on in the kitchen. It then went up through the dial 1-5 until it was on the highest setting. The extractor fan is not connected to the oven - it's a separate electrical item.
Nothing after that. Must have been 2 or 3 years ago now.

@MaddestGranny It's deliverance.

Tbthyhdvscb · 26/02/2026 18:08

This has happened to me too, so I completely believe it’s something woo. The same thing happened to me - something male sounding whispered in my ear in my house. I even felt like a coldness on the back of my neck. I span around and watched as a black but also transparent figure ran away from me making a weird high pitched almost giggling sound. I have no explanation for it. I ran immediately out of the room and my DH was watching TV in the kitchen whilst washing the dishes, and my children were both tiny and fast asleep in bed.

Justsean · 28/02/2026 18:56

Your daughter has more sensitive hearing than you. It's almost certainly the breeze whisting through your ventilatedoft space or an aircraft in your water pipes. Unless the house is built on an ancient temple site where human sacrifices were carried out. But probably one of the first two options above.

Justsean · 28/02/2026 18:57

Bloody spell check! Airlock not aircraft!

HJC88 · 28/02/2026 20:19

I suspect that your house is just creaking or that wind is getting under the eaves of the house and making an occasional noise like a bang. With it being a new build there may be some snagging needs investigating. Your daughter may have blocked eustachian tubes or something similar which is not unusual at that age and which can make a rushing water noise which could sound like whispering.

You seem to have concatenated all these random events and imagined haunting and strange going ons. I'm sure there is a reasonable scientific explanation for all of it and it is a very long way from being ghosts and ghoulies and long legged beasties and things that go bump in the night

Mlamla · 28/02/2026 21:43

This is a job for a priest , preferably an exorcist, but ordinary priest can help you too. He needs to bless and pray over and in your house, and you or him need to put blessed salt in every corner of your house, your whole family needs to be blessed with holy water. And you should pray the prayers the priest will give you for protection.

henlake7 · 28/02/2026 21:59

There is usually a scientific explanation for most things.
I had a particularly woo day recently....kept seeing a shadowy figure and ghost cat out the corner of my eye. It could of been ghosts but as I was extremely tired and have bad eyesight I'm going to say it was my brain 'filling in the gaps' from my many eye floaters!😆

SeriousFaffing · 28/02/2026 22:34

Also here to say get your house checked for carbon monoxide. Get a detector if you haven’t got one already (sorry to be that guy).

I adore the word concatenated. Rarely seen in the wild. Thank you for using it on here.

When our daughter was about 3 yes old she had an imaginary friend that "told her" things that we felt she couldn't possibly have known. We asked her about this, tried not to react or make a thing of it. Other than it creeping us adults out, nothing came of it. She grew out of it and stopped even remembering about it.

BBW53 · 01/03/2026 11:18

My cousin had something similar in her first home. She had a friend who was a spiritualist who told her to go in to the room with the most disturbances and speak clearly telling the spirit that it is scaring your child and please could it stop doing things like that. It worked for my cousin!
