As the title suggests, and I'm not sure what to think of it, so opinions welcome.
Tonight whilst my daughter (3) was in the living room, she came running up to me in the kitchen and asked me what that noise was in her ear as it wasn't daddy. I asked her what she meant, and she said something said (made said sound) in her ear, and what was it as it wasn't daddy. I thought it was a toy on the sofa so I turned it off. A few minutes later she came running back up to me in the kitchen again and said it happened again, who was it because it isn't daddy (he was upstairs asleep). So, I just turned the tv off and we went to bed.

Now, when I have been in the house alone sometimes I hear sounds or spoken words, but mistook this for being tired, as I'm often up late doing my uni work. I also sometimes feel cold brushes of air, or really loud bangs upstairs, like something has fallen off a wall or something, each time I've gone upstairs to check and nothing is out of place or has fallen. I'm only questioning all of this now because of what my 3 year old told me tonight. I do believe she wouldn't make this up, she was genuinely frightened as to who made the spoken sound in her ear. She was adamant something said something in her ear.

We live in a new build, first occupants, so not haunted. Also no one has died recently.
What do you think?

Could it be voices coming through an air vent and amplified by weather / buildings? I lived in a house that had a bathroom vent and in certain weather conditions, I could hear neighbours talking quietly at their back door from several doors away. The first time it happened was alarming because it was as if they were in the room, but quickly worked out who it was by what they were saying! The buildings were funnelling the sound, it was surreal!

we got a new fridge freezer recently, (mostly because i’m more than bored with the defrosting). this new 1 actually constantly defrosts itself; it also produces quite a range of noises I’ve never heard come out of a fridge before! That said the house was built in 1850’s we’ve also got croaking frogs in our pond early this year & there’re bats in the attic!

Edited

I remember the last time we bought a John Lewis freezer it came with a leaflet explaining that ‘gurgling, popping, knocking, whooshing, moaning and groaning’ noises were all normal operating sounds. It came with a little cartoon of someone jumping with alarm at his vocal freezer.

Maybe customer services were continually fielding terrified phone calls about haunted freezers.

How many flats are on your building?
I live in sixties built flat and here all sorts of odd sounds during the day and at night.

Mostly from neighbours but also from building itself creaking etc.

uncanny!

Perhaps consider having your house professionally space cleared. I do it as a hobby and the difference it makes to the energy of a place is remarkable. After my Father passed away I space cleared my parents home - my DM had come to live with me. I visited my parents house a few weeks later with my DD who was eight at the time and she immediately said something had left the house. She didn’t know that I had space cleared. I asked her what she meant and she said that something was gone that was there before … my Dsis had years previously had an experience in the house that led her to believe that it was haunted.

Have had alsorts of oddities happen in life from very very prolonged dega vu to knowing someone had died 24 hours before anyone told me and before anyone else even knew. There's way more to this world than science can explain or maybe to the human brain or maybe both

Some people pass on peacefully some dont. Some places have lingering essences, some don't. Some people can definitely sense it, some dont. I dont do anything about it, im not a god person, but equally I dont trip over myself looking for "logical" explanations that never really fit either.

Some things are just a little bit woo

I listened to a testimony very recently of a pastor who was contacted about strange happenings in a house surrounding a family and their child. Long story short, it turned out the SIL was a witch and had been bringing toys to the house and this opened a doorway to the demonic realm. Pastor identified the problem and they got rid of the toys and the family moved house without informing the SIL. Whether you believe or not, I would go and see a local vicar/pastor/priest willing to come into your house and pray to find the source. Innocuous items can act as doorways for the spirit realm if someone has bad intentions.

The demonic realm!! 😂😂

I honestly have no idea if some posters on this thread are taking the piss.

I had a friend who had similar problems. She got a priest in to the bless the house. It helped a bit for a short while.

Friend then got a psychic medium in. Upstairs the psychic medium pointed to an African mask hanging in the baby's room. The psychic said it was cursed and to throw it in the bin immediately. The mask had been gift from a friend who had been travelling the world. Once the mask was thrown out all was calm again.

TBF Catholicism is a type of Cult where lots of people all do what they are told to do. Like most large religions.

They’re all brainwashed

It doesn’t always go by how old the property is, it can be something to do with the land itself that the property is built on. My property is haunted and we have heard bangs, drawers opening and closing (No one upstairs at all). My grandson slept over a couple of times and asked me if I had ever seen a man in a black cape (I have but never ever told anyone), he said he saw a person in a black cape and it stood at end of bed then ran straight threw wall, this was exactly what I saw but I never told him, I made out that he might have been dreaming although he was insistent that he actually saw it and it wasn’t a dream, my husband put in a camera in the bedroom which is called the Orb Camera, we have seen a lot of Orbs flying around and then disappearing through the walls. We hear someone walking up the stairs but no one is there. I have (This is going to sound odd) felt limbs of young children on me, I’ve been woken up by hands covering my mouth were I cannot breathe, this is were I felt the limbs. I’m in an old property but I also know friends who have experienced going ons in new properties and when researching this it says it could be the land, it also said that children will see and hear more than an adult would. I would believe your daughter. Sorry not meaning to upset or scare anyone at all, just stating the facts.

I get sleep paralysis on a semi- regular basis. Sometimes there is an entity there. It hurts me by digging it's fingers into my waist or neck. Sometimes it is so so painful and uncomfortable and it feels like I'm being electrocuted. Once, I felt it's fingers stabbing into my waist, and I grabbed it by the wrist and said, "I will hurt you." I looked into it's face. It's features were all blurred out. It had very long, dark hair.

The crazy thing about this, is how it started. The first time I met this "entity" whatever it really is, was after I fell asleep listening to a sleep hypnosis video to induce lucid dreaming...
I won't go into all the details here because it would make a very long read. But in short. I looked into the video and found the actual creator saying (I used to listen to the actual creators videos all the time) the real creator was saying in a video, that she had had a lot of complaints, similar to what happened to me, but that that hadn't been her video, that it was an impersonator with almost exactly the same Youtube username, that had used a computer to steal and mimic her voice.

She said she had done some digging and found out that this "troll" per se, was a witch living in Australia. And I've been haunted ever since. I once asked a psychiatrist for help, but she couldn't do much about it.

I agree with you. It's horrible thing to have and often occurs during stressful periods. The feelings are so real.

I think I might say 'in the name of Jesus Christ go in peace' whilst burning sage, and I'm an atheist.

Parcell · 24/02/2026 07:02

I visited a manmade cave attraction in Kent a couple of years ago. As I was walking out, something whispered ‘angry’ in my ear. It wasn’t a random sound, I felt it too. I wasn’t scared just surprised.

I have has a couple of woo experiences and seen a ‘ghost’ but I would call myself a sceptic. I believe there is more likely to be a scientific rationale explanation.

GoneBackToTheWorld · 24/02/2026 07:11

We are surrounded by strange noises all the time.

It's very easy to convince yourself something is there that isn't.

I'm at home alone. However...

I can hear a neighbour grunting somewhere
A vibrating sound (probably someone's alarm or phone)
The crackling of bubbles in the pipes
A plastic bag of clothes falling over in the bedroom
The daemon sultan Azathoth smacking its chops and capering
The wood in the floor tiles expanding
Someone shutting a ramch sliding door somewhere
Vague traffic sounds

It's nothing to worry about.

That’s the plot from an episode of Hammer House of Horror from the 1970s. I think the psychic had an extensive DVD collection.

MushMonster · 24/02/2026 07:51

Really? This happens in our house too.....it is the neighbours! At times, we can hear them rather clearly, particularly by fireplaces.

StephensLass1977 · 24/02/2026 08:15

Sounds like the sort of noise I get in my ears when I have a wax build up. It gets a lot worse when I've just worked out, and does make popping sounds for about an hour afterwards.

YES! One of my faves of Uncanny was The Shadow Man. 😱

I love uncanny and woo in general fascinates me, but I did suspect that poor man had some serious mental health issues probably triggered by trauma.

Hear me out because I'm definitely not a religious whacko, however I have had experiences with disturbing dark spirit things in the house years ago (although yours are worse than mine were yikes!) .. You need holy objects in the house to counteract the darkness. Get a crucifix. Bring in Mother Mary ( a picture or little statue). Holy water. Minimal cost outlay for max effectiveness. And prayers. Psalm 91 is extremely powerful. Print out a copy, or buy a cheap one online. If you feel comfortable recite it out loud. Pray over your child, whether you believe it or not. Do not under any circumstances bring in New Age "solutions" such a sage, crystals, or smudging. Now is not the time for playing with energy and spirit and allowing space - dark entities and demons get in through cracks. There are a loads of millennial women who are ex New Agers who can verify what I'm saying - although they're over on instagram! You need the big guns and that is the Holy Spirit. I've been there, done that, and ya need Jesus for this job. And you don't need to be a practising Christian to call on him. Psalm 91 is on Spotify. Play it out loud. Minimum effort. Max results.

I’m not religious, but this is excellent advice )assuming the op is in the West). Anything in the house is likely to either originate from the time when Christianity has been the predominant system or been exposed to it for a long time. One of the biggest mistakes is people trying to mix and match systems (although all systems at some point are mix and match inc Christianity it has been moulded into a coherent system - new age very much hasn’t been).

Jack80 · 24/02/2026 09:41

I would get it exorcised.

Hilarious. So you think that the OP’s three year old is being haunted by the spirit of a dead person who was statistically likely to have been a Christian of some kind, and will therefore respond to a random playing it Psalm 23 on YouTube or ‘calling on the Holy Spirit’ and obediently depart the building?

You really have to wonder.

This sounds exciting but also a bit scary @MissyPants and I 100% believe you. And I wonder what it is! The small children in my family, like my little brother when he was a baby (and I was 10,) and my niece and nephew, used to point at things in the room that weren't there. (Well, we grown ups/bigger kids and teens couldn't see them!)

My niece (when she was 3.5) said she saw 'nana' who died a week earlier and was pointing at the corner and smiling, even though we (adults) couldn't see anything! I have also seen cats staring at something we can't see, and hissing and running away.

I can recall (vividly) when I was about 4, seeing something/someone floating over my bed and moving around the room, and I hid my face under the bed covers. I was frozen with fear. My mum told me it was a dream. I know it wasn't.

I also have memories of floating down the stairs myself, (when I was 3-4,) but am not sure if this was a dream.

I have also experienced paranormal activity in a workplace I used to work at. It was a small office block (3 storeys high) that belonged to our employerr.. It was built on a site that used to be a place where they burned women at the stake who they accused of being witches.

I was alone in the building with one other woman, just me and her at 6pm one night. We were shutting down the computers and getting our coats and bags, and the light started flickering and going on and off, and a few pictures on the walls started shaking. We were like Confused

Then we heard a loud knocking on the wall on the other side of the office we were in. We knew there was no-one else in the building, and when I shot into the room where the knocking had come from, there was no-one there, nothing there. This other woman and I were actually terrified, and we grabbed our stuff, locked up the front door, and ran to our car(s!)

Also, the general area where these small office blocks were built had a faint smell of burning hair, and burning flesh, for some years after they were built. The longer time went on, the less you could smell it. The buildings were put there in the early 1980s, and you could smell the burning then, but you cannot smell anything now. I don't know if there was a burning smell pre 1980s, because it was waste land before then that no-one went to really.

I have had quite a few other (similar) experiences over the years too. But these are just a few.

When my youngest was in her baby walker she would focus on a corner of the lounge ceiling. She would smile as if someone was talking to her. When a bit older she would say a boy called John was sitting on a cloud. I'm a very cynical aethiast but found it all a bit woo.

Oh for heavens sake, if you don’t know anything about the psychology behind these things don’t bother.

Maybe look into spiritual systems and how they form. The 19th century occultists discussed this in depth is you’re looking for a starting point.

You clearly have nothing to add here do you?
