Something woo happened tonight.

As the title suggests, and I'm not sure what to think of it, so opinions welcome.
Tonight whilst my daughter (3) was in the living room, she came running up to me in the kitchen and asked me what that noise was in her ear as it wasn't daddy. I asked her what she meant, and she said something said (made said sound) in her ear, and what was it as it wasn't daddy. I thought it was a toy on the sofa so I turned it off. A few minutes later she came running back up to me in the kitchen again and said it happened again, who was it because it isn't daddy (he was upstairs asleep). So, I just turned the tv off and we went to bed.

Now, when I have been in the house alone sometimes I hear sounds or spoken words, but mistook this for being tired, as I'm often up late doing my uni work. I also sometimes feel cold brushes of air, or really loud bangs upstairs, like something has fallen off a wall or something, each time I've gone upstairs to check and nothing is out of place or has fallen. I'm only questioning all of this now because of what my 3 year old told me tonight. I do believe she wouldn't make this up, she was genuinely frightened as to who made the spoken sound in her ear. She was adamant something said something in her ear.

We live in a new build, first occupants, so not haunted. Also no one has died recently.
What do you think?

I imagine she had one of those odd little moments of ringing or crackling in her ear, which would be discombobulating to a small child.

ThatFairy · 21/02/2026 01:28

I think that because there is more than one witness to this is that it's really happening. I've read about sort of lines or small zones in the world where there is heightened paranormal activity. Maybe do some research into your area ? Could be interesting. Me and a friend have seen a ghost before at the same time. We screamed and ran away.

AnneBoleynsNecklace · 21/02/2026 01:36

Not necessarily your house, but the land your house is built on is a possibility, a residual energy. I’ve experienced this in the flat I live in (and my downstairs neighbours directly underneath my flat) also in another flat I lived in years ago. I’m not saying it is that.

Depends what the foundation of your house was built on. Sounds woo but sometimes they can built on land where something tragic happened or graves etc…I’d be looking at the history of the land.

MissyPants · 21/02/2026 01:43

Yes, I can't explain the bangs, like it really sounds like a huge picture or mirror has fallen off a wall and landed on the floor, it's that loud, but each time I've come upstairs thinking "what was that" I've found nothing.
Also me passing off supposed whispers or loud spoken sounds as "being tired' makes me wonder if I am actually hearing it.
And the cold brushes of air, always just passed it off.

People may be quite dismissive of you op but I have felt weird about 2 houses I have lived in. One was ancient and lots of peculiar things happened, my Mother shut down all talk about it and no one talked about it properly till about 20 years after we had all left our childhood home. The other was a very new house that DH and I rented when we relocated cities. That house freaked the hell out of me. Turned out it was built on the site of an old factory that had burned down.

Just try not to worry.

Misnofitness · 21/02/2026 01:49

My so complained about ‘words’ and turned out to a google dot gone rogue!

MissyPants · 21/02/2026 01:57

Yes we don't have a google dot. She was adamant it was in her ear and when she said "it isn't daddy" makes me think it's a male, as the 'imaginary' voices or sounds I've been hearing also sound like a male.
And thank you, I'm not scared, just wondering if it's all making sense now, like part of a puzzle, trying to connect what I think I have been experiencing.

I've also experienced something in the past a long time ago in another house. I can only describe it as an un human growl, the cat made a screech sound and bolted out of the kitchen.

That does sound terrifying. Well done being so calm. This is what your daughter needs to support her.

I have had my fare share of haunting experiences when younger at many houses. All different in how it was presented. You grow less susceptible as you get older. I last witnessed things when I was 26 but continued living in that house, where I had previously saw a lot, for 5 years after the last event. Only witnessed hearing something in the house prior, it sounded like a man trying to connect via a broken radio directly in my head, but at the same time could have been behind me. Does this sound like what your daughter experienced?

All you can do is support, listen and believe her. Reassure her that it is nothing dangerous

ChocolateDigestiveBiscuit · 21/02/2026 03:25

Hear me out because I'm definitely not a religious whacko, however I have had experiences with disturbing dark spirit things in the house years ago (although yours are worse than mine were yikes!) .. You need holy objects in the house to counteract the darkness. Get a crucifix. Bring in Mother Mary ( a picture or little statue). Holy water. Minimal cost outlay for max effectiveness. And prayers. Psalm 91 is extremely powerful. Print out a copy, or buy a cheap one online. If you feel comfortable recite it out loud. Pray over your child, whether you believe it or not. Do not under any circumstances bring in New Age "solutions" such a sage, crystals, or smudging. Now is not the time for playing with energy and spirit and allowing space - dark entities and demons get in through cracks. There are a loads of millennial women who are ex New Agers who can verify what I'm saying - although they're over on instagram! You need the big guns and that is the Holy Spirit. I've been there, done that, and ya need Jesus for this job. And you don't need to be a practising Christian to call on him. Psalm 91 is on Spotify. Play it out loud. Minimum effort. Max results.

ImDoneOnceAndForAll2 · 21/02/2026 03:36

Talk out loud, be nice. Ask it to go. Tell it that you and your daughter are scared and please leave

P.s not Spotify, it's in Apple podcasts. Lovely woman's (non cheesy American) voice.

A cracking sound in a new build can be caused by either wood expanding and contracting or by poor construction methods causing joints or bolts to shift. I lived somewhere once where I can only liken it to “gunshot” sounds. Thankfully my DP also heard them or I’d have freaked out entirely.

I asked Jesus to help me in the darkest, scariest time of my life. He didn't.

I have asked him again to help me recently. I will see how it goes. I want to believe.

ShakyBake · 21/02/2026 05:50

Personally I'd put the house on the market

Owly11 · 21/02/2026 07:12

It's normal to hear sounds you can't identify and houses do move and make sounds, including loud cracks. That's all completely normal. As for your daughter hearing something in her ear, that does sound more concerning. I would take her to the GP to have a look in her ear to see if she has an ear infection or build up of wax.

MissyPants · 21/02/2026 09:41

Thank you, I don't normally jump to woo as I believe there is always a logical explanation which I still think tiredness is for mine. But the falls I hear aren't structure, it sounds like objects falling or blinds falling down, or scrapings of the wall when an object is falling.
Which could be the loft as we have stuff up there?
But my daughter saying this, particularly with her being so young does make you think.

Yes, my house is old but we added a kitchen extension this past autumn, and I’ve been in the kitchen a couple of times when a loud cracking noise emanated from a built-in wooden bench under a window — it’s just the wood contracting or expanding, not supernatural activity. Would probably have been mildly alarming if I’d heard it from another room.

Check your carbon monoxide levels and let in some fresh air

Yes, call on Jesus to protect you. My mother did this once and instinctively made the sign of the cross. when she was under severe, sudden psychic attack by something evil, and was immediately protected from harm. Having a crucifix in the house wouldn't hurt too, though the presence in your home may be benign.

StickySeason · 21/02/2026 17:09

I once experienced the “something unexplained falling” in my old house. This house had a wooden floor where the stairs started. Immediately at the top of the stairs was our bedroom door, which we always left open at night because we had a toddler and wanted to hear her if she called out in the night. It was about 11pm and dh and I had just got into bed and we whispering quietly together. At the bottom of the stairs we heard a thud and a rustle, as if something heavy in a plastic bag had fallen onto the wooden floor. Because of the bedroom door being open and it only being at the bottom of the stairs, the noise was loud and clear. We both thought the cat (who is shut in the kitchen at night) had escaped the kitchen and knocked something off the table in the hall. I went downstairs to look…there was not a thing out of place, no bag, nothing on the floor, and the cat was asleep in her bed behind a closed door. Both dh and I heard the sound as clear as day. A number of other things happened in that house over the following year that we couldn’t explain, and then it stopped as suddenly as it started.

So I’m of no help to you, OP, but I can relate.

I get sleep paralysis on a semi- regular basis. Sometimes there is an entity there. It hurts me by digging it's fingers into my waist or neck. Sometimes it is so so painful and uncomfortable and it feels like I'm being electrocuted. Once, I felt it's fingers stabbing into my waist, and I grabbed it by the wrist and said, "I will hurt you." I looked into it's face. It's features were all blurred out. It had very long, dark hair.

The crazy thing about this, is how it started. The first time I met this "entity" whatever it really is, was after I fell asleep listening to a sleep hypnosis video to induce lucid dreaming...
I won't go into all the details here because it would make a very long read. But in short. I looked into the video and found the actual creator saying (I used to listen to the actual creators videos all the time) the real creator was saying in a video, that she had had a lot of complaints, similar to what happened to me, but that that hadn't been her video, that it was an impersonator with almost exactly the same Youtube username, that had used a computer to steal and mimic her voice.

She said she had done some digging and found out that this "troll" per se, was a witch living in Australia. And I've been haunted ever since. I once asked a psychiatrist for help, but she couldn't do much about it.
