I didn’t know they’d done a version of that! Going to have a listen.

Alive by Pearl Jam

i think the refrain “whoa! I’m still alive” would cause some consternation

PuppyMonkey · 13/02/2026 17:15

I’ve always fancied Is That All There is by Peggy Lee at my funeral.Grin

DuffRose · 13/02/2026 17:16

Kasabian - I’m on fire

Bat out of hell?

My friends mum's had this at her funeral (she literally went through the cremation curtains to it). To be fair she had been a big fan of The Loaf in life and it was played at her request. But it also raised a smile on an otherwise terrible day.

Allseeingallknowing · 13/02/2026 17:31

Sorry if already mentioned - Smoke gets in your eyes!

We Have All The Time In The World- I still want it though

It is a truly beautiful song and I very much disagree that it's inappropriate.

It's not saying that we'll be alive forever at all; but rather that we will have (or have had) plenty of time together for love and for the things that matter. It isn't promising that we'll be able to wander aimlessly around Bicester Village for the next thousand years Grin

People can make joke wishes and requests but it's not always what the grieving want to hear on the day. That said, if you chose an appropriate very sad song, well, firstly you probably won't want to hear that song ever again and secondly close family will be in bits, a funeral can be very traumatising when you have to keep a brave face for other relatives.

I kind of agree with you but if the deceased had expressed their wishes then I feel they should be respected as much as possible.

My uncle requested (and had) the Test Match Special theme to go out to and it made us all smile as it was completely fitting. Equally we choose a favourite but hardly played song for my dad because we couldn't face hearing it regularly and unexpectedly.

A friend of mine had Gace Jones Pull up to the Bumper (in your long black limousine)
It was typically amusing like she was 🤣 🙏

A friend had it at his...in a church. The poor vicar didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

A dear friend of mine had the leaving music as "living in a box" it wasn't written on the order of service though - just "leaving music" so when it started playing and a few bars in it dawned on us - everyone started laughing - he always liked the last laugh..

Ghost in my house would be inappropriate

Always look on the bright side of life.

I don't know if it still the case, but for years this was the most played song at funerals!

Evenstar · 13/02/2026 17:55

My father had to speak to the organist at the crematorium he managed as it dawned on him that the “Russian folk tune” she had been playing as mourners exited the chapel was “The Carnival is Over” 😳 The tune was adapted from a Russian folk song, but I can’t imagine that was what the people hearing it thought!

Frostynoman · 13/02/2026 17:59

Lily Allen, F You would be truly inappropriate(!)

The first time I heard a Green Day song was on ER, where the child is dying of cancer and they play ‘Good Riddence’. What a song

While waiting at a crematorium a couple of years ago, Ding Dong the Witch is Dead was playing at the previous funeral. I wondered whether they asked for the song from the Wizard of Oz expecting Somewhere over the Rainbow and got that instead.

My mum told me to play that! Need a humour emoji mumsnet
