My friend had Fire by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown as her final piece of music and didn't go through the curtains until it got to the bit where he sings "You're gonna burn, you're gonna burn..."

We just knew she'd chosen that herself.

Just outed myself probably.

I've heard of several people who've chosen that. I expect crematoria are very used to it by now that many people like to bow out with 'shock-factor' songs.

As long as it was chosen by/would have been appreciated by the deceased, it's probably a fairly routine and unremarkable scenario for them.

These days, they're probably far more surprised if people choose The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Over or most other hymns (with the exception of a few such as Abide With Me); rather than the now-commonplace dark-humour-type pop songs.

My dear departed dad requested 2 of these...! 🙈🤣

I know a family who had the countdown theme played at the end of the service, because their mum loved the show. Can’t watch the programme now without thinking of it!

The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Over

Ended, not Over - d'oh!

I have asked for Popcorn by Hot Butter in my funeral wishes. I have warned my husband and children in advance. They appreciate my slightly off sense of humour.

Did you plan to put unpopped popcorn in your pockets too??

CelebrateAndDream · 14/02/2026 15:07

I’m a funeral celebrant…I love some of the music choices I get to play. My service next Friday is an 84 year old man who left instructions for music. He’s being brought in to ‘Knocking on heaven’s door’, we are having a photographic slide show with ‘Who wants to live forever’ (Queen) and the recessional (exit) is ‘Immortality’ by the Bee Gees. A man with a great sense of humour ☺️

An 90-something relative had The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Ended. It was very poignant and brought a few tears to my eyes. Another relative had Abide With Me.

Whilst I'm sometimes a bit uncomfortable about singing in front of others, there's something soothing and uplifting about communal singing. The last funeral I went to was entirely non-religious and aside from a moment in which we were asked to quietly remember the deceased, there was nothing to participate in, as such. And so I left feeling a bit like a spectator.

I was keen on that for my Dad's cremation for when he went in behind the curtain. He liked Johnny Cash and would have found it hilarious. Mum put her foot down but my Aunt said she was going to steal the idea.

ForPearlViper · 14/02/2026 15:42

I'd quite like Ding Dong the Witch is Dead at mine.

HollyHoly · 14/02/2026 16:11

Seasons in the Sun, by Terry Jacks.

So desperately sad. It’s about a man facing his execution.

An old person at my church finished with the Dads Army theme one of their favourite programmes.

That's given me an idea! I think I'll ask for Fire Brigade by The Move and go through the curtains when they reach the chorus and start singing 'call the fire brigade, call the fire brigade'Grin

Burn baby burn
Living in a box
I’ll be watching you

Ive been to a cremation where the deceased requested burn baby burn (disco inferno) and everyone laughed which lightened the mood a bit.
Then a very emotional song chosen by their partner....which everyone cried

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 13/02/2026 13:48

Queen or Billy Joel - Only The Good Die Young - if the deceased was 102.

I went to a funeral where this was the song for a man in his 90's . It said what his children were thinking but couldn't voice.

GardenersDelight · 14/02/2026 17:56

Slightly different angle but I wanted Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye at my dad's but was vetoed by my mum and brother as they were concerned what people would think! Wish I'd stood firm now

Another op said her Dad choose it for her own funeral. I always love a lighter/happy song at a funeral.

My mother is having Burn Baby Burn and Ashes to Ashes at her cremation. I will be dancing on her grave …

It's about a terminally ill man on his death bed. Green Green Grass of Home is about a man facing execution.
