A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙 🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Top private school in Cheshire set to close amid government introduction of VAT on independent education sector (msn.com)

Devastated Upset Horrified Angry . These, are my emotions at the moment on a School I know very well.

How, long before in Manchester and the Northwest before Manchester High, Withington Girls and Manchester Grammar becomes the 'Andy Burnham Community High School'

If Alderley Edge cannot be strong enough an area to support a 400 girl Private School due to VAT introduction what are the odds that come August this year the Independent school system might be in a catastrophic place. No doubt Bridget boys can be girls Philipson will be cracking open the champagne with the news that all those year 10/12 girls have no chance for exam success !

I will never forget the smirks, the envy, the comments about embossed stationary, and alleged ‘whining’ - all made by BP, RR and pals.

Bitter and twisted.

My jaw dropped when I saw it was Alderley edge. When my sons friend and his dad both petrol heads had a weekend trip, they took my son to the garage sales forecourts there to drool over the designer cars. A friend collecting for charity at Waitrose Etc said back then you needed tap and go, no-one carried cash. Another friend shopped for charity shop cast offs designer labels still with tags on.

An architect friend had a client who bought a house there his WAG lady didn't like so it was demolished and rebuilt. It was a few years old. Four million he paid.

What happened. Is the money in Dubai now?

redange · 26/02/2026 13:59

I tell you though what a brilliant location it would be for Labour to create a 'Hostel of Multiple Occupancy' out of the facilities. Just think of the great easy to access location Next to a train Station right off the A 34 . look you could destroy another Restaurant San Carlo and turn it in to a Soup Kitchen . Best of all though you could ensure Alderley Edge becomes a magnet for societal change with a 50-60% drop in house prices.

I wonder if Steve Reid and Ange herself of thought of the possibilities of bringing diversity to the heart of the Golden Triangle !...

A friend knows someone who's just dropped 7 million on a new home there including interior design. When did Envy of the north become a thing. It used to be just the Cotswold triangle.

Don't they realise these hard working self made millionaires will just up sticks outside the reach of the claws of the EU

Puts a whole new slant on the Real Housewives of Cheshire.

redange · 26/02/2026 14:16

The Real Housewives of Cheshire has never represented the 'Real Housewives of Cheshire' just a bunch of pretenders. The best times in Alderley were between 1996-2003 great times . I wish i could go back to them. I have been bored in Essex since 2017...

EmeraldRoulette · 26/02/2026 15:17

@redange I love living in Essex - I did want a much quieter life after living in London though.

I think there's loads of places to go if you drive (I used to but I can't now)

depends what you're looking for, of course

I have never been to Alderley. Sorry to hear about the school of course. I did have it down as a well off area -so that's gone wrong has it?

i'm assuming today's by election, the result won't be counted till tomorrow morning will it? I really don't want it to go Green

What does Caroline Lucas think about this I wonder?

It's been failing in numbers for decades. The girls school is a huge site and some of the land has been sold for property development. The roads leading to the school is always grid locked. The main building is lovely though. Perhaps a developer could put it into flats.

It'll only add to the traffic congestion though.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15595561/Police-rush-secondary-school-two-teachers-taken-hospital.html#

We won’t have any teachers in standard state schools at this rate. Who’d do it.

It will be interesting to see whether the reason for the fight is reported.

There was a fight at the same school back in 2018, which was reported as being due to community tensions between Slovakian Roma communities and Muslim communities. The fight in 2018 was apparently triggered by a fight between 2 girls where a Somali girl's headscarf was torn off... then the next day their brothers getting involved... which resulted in the school locking down, the police called...and parents trying to scale the school gates with weapons!

So there have clearly been tensions for a long time.

But my impression is that there has been a sea-change since then in UK community tensions and also in how they are reported. I get the impression that a lot is now kept out of the media, and very carefully framed if it does appear. So I'll be interested to see what appears, especially in the state media the BBC.

peacefulpeach · 26/02/2026 17:20

Ahh the beauty of multi culturalism, tolerance, and giving anyone but the teachers authority.

Not had time to catch up with the thread today but when is the Gorton result through? Guessing not till tomorrow or do they take even longer when it’s a single by election?

I think the count is overnight, so early hours of Friday morning, though imagine a recount might be a possibility given it is likely to be very close between the three main contenders, so might stretch out a bit. Though given last GE turnout there was less than 50% it will be interesting to see what today’s turnout will be.

Should be comfortably done and dusted for the start of the breakfast news cycle.

We went there for an open day. It's a lovely school. DD decided that it wasn't for her. She was 10 at that time.

Not walkable local. We would have had to drive and go back. There are Labour supporters, quite wealthy ones local to the area. The school offered grants then.

Private school?

My parents paid for me privately and also my sister. I got a review grant after the first year.

To add, my sister had what is now known as SEND. She had to be protected in a private school. She was diagnosed as a young adult with Bipolar. She's now 68 and the Nuns are still looking after her in another Country.

I'm not trying to be snarky, but I honestly find that baffling.
Labour are against all of the benefits you enjoy by living there. Why support them?

I don't understand your post or point. I'm genuinely not trying to be snarky.

I live in Cheshire. In a constituency that has a Labour MP. Very happy about that as well.

I support the removal of the charitable status on private schools. My father, RIP, probably would disagree.

Grants were offered and she passed the entrance exam. She decided not to go. She decided to go local. Got a first at Manchester University.

She passed the entrance exam with 100%
