A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙 🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

@Upstartled i think you’re right no safe Labour seats, and quite possibly no safe seats at all.

Labour vote percentage halved in G&D which is in line with what we are seeing in the various local council by elections - granted their vote is sometimes reducing by even more in some.

Aside all the Manchester excitement Council ward by election in Southampton yesterday. Labour seat taken with 51% of vote in 2022 followed by Cons with 37%. Won by Lib Dems last night from Labour. Labour still second but vote at 27% almost halved.

May locals plus Welsh and Scottish governments elections are looking like even more of a bloodbath.

But whilst Kemi may regularly skewer KS at PMQs at G&D last night and in Council by elections there is no cut through. Just 8% of the vote in the Southampton by election down from 37%. G&D was never going to be much, but 2% of vote is pretty dire. Still relatively early days but we, or maybe I, need to start seeing some real impact where it matters.

Upstartled · 27/02/2026 07:50

Yes, the biggest trend is away from the established parties towards untested parties who haven't had their ambitious policy ideas cut down by reality, the slow moving wheels of governance and the 'computer says no' civil service.

EasternStandard · 27/02/2026 08:06

I have a feeling the local elections will show a different picture with more turquoise, due to areas now voting.

However it goes Labour will struggle if they get wiped out.

TheNuthatch · 27/02/2026 08:15

Morning 😁

Take that Starmer!

I've been sniggering at the Labour response this morning. They seem to be spinning it as a good thing because Reform didn't win. Labour came third ffs! Both the Greens and Reform beat Labour, in a safe Labour seat.

Very concerned to hear about the family voting. There are issues with postal voting in my constituency too, but Labour don't care because it usually benefits them.

I'm pleased that Labour are pursuing officials to investigate illegal voting. Apparently it is a worry for them this time @TheNuthatch!

Although I think that may come as a surprise to some Labour supporters, they seem to think that this is a concern which is exclusive to Reform.

Agreed. Reform had an uphill battle in G&D due to demographics.
Just heard Prof John Curtis say similar.

I think @EmeraldRoulette had a good point. The level of disgust with politics resulted in a complete upset.

Edited

There were allegations in my constituency of male heads of families block voting by post for the entire family.
Labour won, and did nothing about the allegations. Perhaps that might change if they think they've lost the Muslim vote.

Yeah, you can rely on Labour to make self preservation the priority.

Ikr glossing over coming third. It’s brilliant. Ha to Starmer and all of them.

I can’t believe the reactions! You would think their first thoughts on hearing the result would be that Starmer/Labour are surely finished, obliterated. But no it’s a victory! Reform got a “bloody nose!”

edited to say it’s just as expected though, always “look over there” with these posters,

Albertroad · 27/02/2026 08:50

Hello! I've cone to join you..if that is ok?

The G&D result has really worried me. I just cannot fathom a mindset that would prefer a Green win. Its bonkers. I need some sanity.

Pointofsingularity · 27/02/2026 05:50

I really think that it’s a case of prepare for the worse, now. The clarity and determination that you seek, is well beyond the ability of the UK’s politicians IMO - that much is clear.

The Greens won by shape-shifting and pandering to the Muslim vote - sectarianism and increasing polarisation is the future. Some may say that’s overly pessimistic, whilst I maintain it’s simply observational pragmatism.

Starmer, if he survives, will now be compelled to move further to the left.

The huge worry for the UK is that this co-opting of the Green party gives a unified, national 'side', rather than a smattering of local, independent candidates.

This way this by-election was fought and won is a significant step towards a very dark possible future for the UK.

SpaceRaccoon · 27/02/2026 09:04

I must say my joy at Labour's bloody nose is tempered by who dealt it.

But yes maybe best the Greens get a good amount of sunlight before the next GE.

Liker · 27/02/2026 09:12

Wow I agree that it was Labour who got the bloody nose, not Reform. I think Reform will do very well in other areas, so not sure why Labour supporters are crowing.

Imagine if Andy Burnham had stood - could've been so different!

The Greens are a worry, but will they do well in other areas? I seriously doubt it.

Yes to all this.

The Burnham mess won't go away anytime soon.

I think you are right, the Greens have a formidable vote share on the national polls but they are in really geographically concentrated areas, so we don't see them turning the MRP maps green. So, where they do win, I think we'll see them do exceptionally well.

I doubt they will, the Green’s win can largely be attributed to the specific demographics of G&D.

DancingFerret · 27/02/2026 09:33

Family voting and pre-election leaflets in Urdu: the G&D result was probably always on the cards.

Julen7 · 27/02/2026 09:53

According to the Independent Labour are also unhappy about the family voting, not just Reform.

Well, it seems my gut, and friend, suggesting a narrow Labour win were well off. Good.

I wouldn’t believe any cheering by Labour fans about this. That’s all face-saving nonsense. Everyone knows that the Greens are an unpleasant mob of weirdos. That they can take a very, very safe Labour seat, pushing Labour into third, spells doom for Starmer and Labour.

The ground will begin to cave in beneath Starmer over the weekend.

EasternStandard · 27/02/2026 10:23

Polanski speaking rn - this is an existential crisis for Labour.

Good. I hope they feel it as they crash out.
