Tried it once ...... never again!!

Just caught a bit of the Winter Olympics on TV and was reminded of the one and only time I tried skiing. It was one of the worst and most terrifying experiences of my life and I will definitely not, never, ever be doing it again!!

Ditto, my only experience of scuba diving .... still having nightmares years later!!!!!

Both these activities are on my "Tried it once but never again" list. Anyone else got a Never Again experience?

I've just googled it and feel queasy having read it!

It's the traditional post-partum meal in my mate's neck of the woods, not just an old wives thing, the hospital will proudly present you with your shit sausage as you lie there knackered, battered & woozy. Builds you up, they say. Very glad not to reproduce in France, I couldn't choke one down when I was feeling my best, never mind in those circs.

Me too! But until now I’ve never met anyone who agrees with me. The cheering loons around me at the theatre appeared to be in a cult.

I’ve still no idea what it was all about.

I’d been told it’s a must see , the best thing you’ll ever see on stage , so I was utterly gobsmacked how much I disliked it , couldn’t follow it , was bored within ten minutes and fell asleep in the first half . Utter shite !

Fighting Skinheads got a doing
Barbiturates very dangerous drugs
Heroin laced E..90s.

sorry to spoil your story but ‘smacky pills’ were an urban myth. And anyway, heroin doesn’t work if you eat it due to the way it metabolises so, even if there was smack in the pills you took (there wasn’t), it wouldn’t have affected you.
I remember people saying it though, at the time, and it made it all seem even more exciting, I’d agree 😁

Via ferranta

Do you mean Via Ferrata? If so did this in Catalonia and had to chicken out half way round. I'm scared of heights but thought I'd challenge myself as our one didn't look that high up, however a teenage boy freaked out in front of us on the way round and we ended up stuck in the highest bit for an unreasonable amount of time. It was exhausting and terrifying.

Another way of looking at it is - being bundled up in warm clothes, swooping down a beautiful mountain on a sunny day with a croque monsieur and hot chocolate at the end of it.

Not all of us are skilled enough to swoop down 😩.

I keep going skiing and still not sure if I like it! It's mostly exhausting and terrifying. I love the views and a sauna/hot tub at the end of the day though... Maybe I should just book a scenic winter spa break instead 😂.

I've skiied since I was a kid, but haven't been much as an adult as, to be honest, DH wasn't keen to try it and much prefers to go on holiday to warm/tropical places. Anyway I've now recruited our kids (7 and 3) to winter sports. I've taught them both to skate, DD figure skates and plays hockey, DS is too young to do much more than skate round but he asks his sister to shove him into the boards and likes a scrap so I reckon he'll play hockey. They've also both had indoor ski lessons and loved it. DH finally gave it a try and oh my god it was a disaster, I did the beginner lesson with him because I haven't skiied in years. He lasted 20 minutes out of a 2 hour session, he literally could not stay on his feet, it was like a comedy sketch, I have no idea how he managed to fall in so may varied ways. By the time I finished the lesson he'd had 3 beers in the bar, and the first thing he said when he saw me was "NEVER again". 😂😂😂
So naturally we're going to lake Tahoe at Easter. I reckon I might get him to give snowboarding a try......

Lake Tahoe is another thing I'll happily not do again. Most overrated place on the planet. Sorry! 😂

Try Wanderwegs - they're long, marked trails that give you loads more scenery per lift & tend not to have much by way of steep sections. Occasionally you have to side-step uphill a bit (if you're not all flash & using touring bindings & skins that is) but it's worth it. I remember eating my sarnies in a tiny hanging valley with a frozen lake & massive sheer, granite walls, & not a soul for miles & miles. Utter bliss. The local ski shops/ instructors can suggest trails suited to your level.
Rent a beacon, you're not likely to need it but it'll reassure you when you're out on your own. A thermos of good sweet black coffee & a hipflask of schnapps help too!

I agree that stories about pills containing heroin mixed with E are an urban myth but you absolutely can absorb heroin if you take it orally.

Agree with the Hamilton comments. Then-teen DD was desperate to see it when it first came out. We all went (younger teen DS included). I had no idea what was going on, it was boiling hot in the theatre and I just wondered what all the fuss was about. DD loved it and I know a couple of people who’ve seen it numerous times/cried etc.
Weirdly we watched it during Covid (I think it was aired in Disney plus) and I actually quite enjoyed it on TV in the comfort of my own sofa as by then I was more familiar with the songs and story, although I’d never go and see it at the theatre again.

As a contrast I loved Come From Away - seen it twice ‘live’ and once on TV.

A heights and sights excursion in Gran Canaria. The coach looked and smelt like it was out of the 70s and we hurtled round tight bends in a ravine. The coach driver sung to himself holding a microphone . I was convinced we would go over like dozens of other fatalities they and their vehicles unrecoverable and marked by a wooden cross at the side of the road. We stopped at lunchtime for a light lunch and most of us were too busy being sick to even sit at the table.Never been on an organised excursion since.

MarjorieWestriding · 11/02/2026 10:30

Not remotely tempted to see 'Hamilton', but did go and see 'One Man Two Guvnors' because I knew someone in the cast and got free tickets. The reviews were full of people thinking they were about to have a heart attack from laughing so much and people rolling in the aisles in hilarity, but I didn't find it remotely funny. I may have smiled once but that was it.

bumphousebump · 11/02/2026 10:57

Yes Hamilton was really not my cup of tea - I could see it was an amazing thing - but really not for me - apart from King George. We nearly left at the interval and should have done, but thought it might get better.

Similarly Stranger Things - went with 2 fans of it - and even they were bored witless.

mbosnz · 11/02/2026 11:31

Bungee jumping. Never, NEVER again. I'm scared of bloody heights. Our 'friends' decided it would be a fun thing for our combined pre-wedding do. I only did it because they said I wouldn't - utter, bloody ass that I am!

Lilaclane · 11/02/2026 14:00

Great thread.

Not one mention of matcha lattes? Ok, I'll go. It tasted like warm grass. Never again!

Another vote for Zumba. I shuffled one way, and the entire class shuffled the other way to the delight of the instructor.

And drugs. Flirted in my mid-twenties, once pooped myself in Heaton Park after taking too much e. Hopped on the tram high as a kite, having wiped my backside with a sock. Neverrrrrr again.

MarjorieWestriding · 11/02/2026 14:07

Thinking of parks, I got stuck on top of park railings whilst trying to climb over them late one night. I was up there perched on the spiky railings for absolutely ages because I was too frit to jump down. I did get down in the end but it took me a good while. The next morning my buttocks were very sore and covered in bruises. Didn't do that again.

Ate two cannabis brownies in Amsterdam several years ago in the company of three friends. Having eaten the first one I decided after 7 seconds it hadn’t worked and scoffed another one.

What followed was a brief period of happiness, where everything seemed funny and the world seemed light. A friend then turned to me and said, “ITS NOT FUNNY”. I accepted this new truth immediately without argument and so began several hours of panic that we were to be arrested. The other two members of our party had no issues with paranoia and instead became very slow and withdrawn.

We returned to the accommodation where we were staying and discussed calling an ambulance as we were both confident death was imminent. However, instead we went to sleep where I could see myself being lowered into my grave. The other two in our party were still contently stoned with no issues!

So traumatised by the incident I never looked at drugs again!

Any kind of theme park/fairground ride.
We had a seaside fairground (permanent) not far from home, and when l was a very young teenager l went with a group of my mates.
I was very travel/motion sick at the time, which didn't even occur to me.
We went on this horrendous thing called The Astronaut and right at the top l threw up. All over me (and presumably) the people below us.
I've never gone near anything like that again. I was mortified. Had to go home on the bus, too.
When l went to Florida with my ex husband years later, he went on all the rides at the theme parks and l sat in the sun with an ice cream and read my book.
He took the piss out of me, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have been best pleased if l'd vomited all over him.
Same holiday, we went to one of those cinemas where the seats move to accompany the film (I forget what the film was) which are supposedly suitable even for toddlers.
I had to get up out of my seat and stand at the side because l was about to be sick.
Weirdly when we went to Amsterdam on the ferry it was extremely choppy, people were being ill all over, and l was absolutely fine.

Edited

Carousel of progress?

Getting into a car with my Mother driving, jeez she hit a bollard before we got to the top of her road and then she managed to drive into a big bush at the side of the same road. We eventually got to the town centre and she had 4 attempts at getting into a parking spot scraping her door against a concrete post while trying, then she got out saying you do it. On the way back I offered to drive but she declined my offer and managed to almost get us home but forgot that she was supposed to stop at the crossroads and nearly killed us. She's still driving but without me.

Same here with my mum 🤣 except mine hit a wall and blamed the wall, saying “it wasn’t there before” 😆

TheChicDreamer · 11/02/2026 14:51

These are brilliant, I haven’t had a good old Mumsnet laugh for ages 😆

For me, I will never again do:

Caving (got stuck, panicked)
Abseiling (did it with school, wouldn’t do it now)
Go Ape (had to be rescued from the junior level)
Skiing (I totally embarrassed myself on the nursery slope)
Swimming with dolphins (the water was fucking freezing and so choppy that everyone in the boat was sick and dd2 spent the whole time crying in my arms)
Road hacking (I like riding but I’m too scared to go out on roads now because cars, cyclists and, er… concrete.)
Any shellfish with the taste and texture of bogies. wtf is the point?!
LSD or mushrooms - mental
Camping - ‘nuff said
Rollercoasters. Just - no.

Things I would do again in the right circumstances (but only if it was free):

Egypt
Cocaine / weed
Snorkelling
Mountain climbing (not to be confused with rock climbing)
Luxury camping at a festival

I’m on the fence about going in light aircraft again.

And finally, I would never:

Parachute jump
Bungee jump
Hot air balloon ride
Go in a Helicopter
Water ski or do any other water sports

TheChicDreamer · 11/02/2026 14:53

Oh. And I am not going in one of those shark cages. Ever.

Standing at the end of the line in aqua aerobics.Every time the swimmers around me changed exercise I got a mini tidal wave.

@SolzhenitsynsCat they absolutely were a thing, Ask me how I know 😝
Plus the PSA Glastonbury 1995 attested to that fact.
Ruined our Saturday night.

My DS & DSD went on holiday via a ferry on a really windy day… DSD rang to say DS was vomiting so much (and they hadn’t left the port at that point!)
They sailed into a storm so bad that everyone was either sick or feeling sick. Her update at this point was that the “vom was spreading out from under the locked toilet door”
I was so worried about him!
However he recovered quickly and one of her updates involved him doing the Macarena on a belly of Vodka Wkd!

His only comment on return was that he would never bloody ever go on a ferry again!
