To NOT like the evenings stretching...

I absolutely adore the dark nights and love it when the clocks go back in October, love driving home from work in the dark. Love lying in bed all cozy at 7pm looking up at the big, bright moon. Love being at home in the warm or going for a night walk and looking at everyone's Halloween decorations.

I don't like the lighter evenings! I find it harder to sleep, feel like I should be doing more or that everyone is doing something sociable and interesting. All the twats come out getting drunk in their gardens or blasting their shit music out and motorbikes revving about everywhere.

Fuck the light evenings... leave me in the winter!

Yes, I love the long cold nights of winter. The sun can "go and do one", as they say.

But sadly it's still summer and daylight savings time here down under.

What temperatures and dawn and dusk times would everyone prefer?

I'd like:

6.30am dawn
20.00 dusk

15c minimum winter
22c maximum summer

Rain but only during the night 👌

I'd like .....

6.30am dawn
22.00 dusk

10c minimum winter
35c maximum summer

and also rain only at night - and not too much of it

Not 'sadly' at all - well, yes it is a bit sad because the evenings are starting to draw in. The long cold nights of winter can "go and do one", I'm dreading it already. Thank goodness autumn here is usually glorious, so hopefully I don't have to face the cold for a while yet. I don't function well without sun. 🌞

pippapipps · 08/02/2026 00:38

Yes op that's me ...I'm hating seeing the stretch in the evening and it's becoming really noticeable now..I'm a winter person love the long dark evenings

narcASD · 08/02/2026 01:24

Jan & Feb are 2 out of 4 worst months of the year, I love dark evenings but by this time of year I'm yearning for a bit of light as find it depressing, June & July are bloody awful too in the SE, too hot, too bright and can never sleep

Braindraining · 08/02/2026 01:28

I’m longing for the long hot summer days. I want to sit in my garden in the evening with a glass of wine and enjoy looking at my plants growing.

gillefc82 · 08/02/2026 01:37

I despise the winter time and the months of unceasing cold, darkness and rubbish weather. As someone who is convinced they are part human/part lizard, I crave feeling the hot sun on my bones, warming me up and making me feel refreshed and reenergised.

Sorry @IWantNiceNeighbours but personally I can’t wait for Summer to get here!

JustCabbaggeLooking · 08/02/2026 01:57

😊I like this thread and all our differences.
I love all of the seasons.
I used, when I was younger, to like Summer the best. Then Spring, sprouting plants, warmth, Easter.
Autumn, crunchy leaves and Harvest Festivals.
As a young Mam I hated January. Dark nights and Christmas to be paid for.
I love January now as I never have to worry about the postman😁and there's the knowledge that Spring is coming. Again.

thornbury · 08/02/2026 05:08

Where I live it's dark by 7pm all year round, as early as 6pm in winter. Having said that, I've already been out for a run and I'm now drinking tea sitting on my garden sofa in the morning sunshine, so it's not all bad.

BelleEpoque27 · 08/02/2026 05:18

No thanks. I am so tired of walking to after-school club in the dark, it feels like a prison. Having to be home from the park or a bike ride by 4pm at the weekend. Nothing to look at out the window on my commute because it's pitch black outside the train window. I'm looking forward to warm sunny evenings where we can play in the garden after dinner.

If you're going to bed at 7pm you can't really complain about people being noisy. Yes pissheads are annoying, but 7pm is daytime, not an adult's bedtime.

I also get cystitis a lot during the summer months.

Try a rehydration sachet as soon as you feel the twinge - I went through a phase of this a few years ago in a hot summer, a GP recommended it and it works really well.

Obviously only one and not every day, be cautious but it can really help if you're dehydrated without realising.

Maraudingmarauders · 08/02/2026 05:30

I haaaaate the dark and the cold and the wet. I can do the cold if it’s dry and frosty but the ever persistent damp temperature of 6-8celcius really grinds on me.
I would love:

6.30am dawn year round, I sleep with my window open and whilst it’s a lovely sound the dawn chorus at 5am is wearing.
9pm dusk year round. I adore long drawn out summer evenings where you feel like it’s never really going to get dark and the dusk twilight hangs around for ages before it finally goes a nice clear black with zero clouds.

winter -1celcius for one month would be perfect. December
spring - 12-15celcius. Occasionally a spring rain but only for as hoc days. January-April
summer - 25-27celcius every day without fail, clear skies. May-October. Perhaps rain with that lovely smell once a fortnight for 2 hours.
autumn - 2-5celcius, crisp and dry with beautiful leaves. october-November

I think we might be related ☀

mellongoose · 08/02/2026 05:39

I don’t mind whether it’s light or dark and appreciate both in their own ways. However I have had it with all this MUD!!

We don’t have footpaths so every time I take the dog out it’s just so slippery!

Porkpieandmustard · 08/02/2026 06:14

I love the dark and cold and don’t look forward to hot summers at all. Total opposite to DH who loathes winter, so I can at least be pleased for him that spring is coming.

Barrellturn · 08/02/2026 06:17

I usually like winter but this wet fecker can feck off! My house is covered in mud, every item of outdoor clothing is always dripping and drying somewhere.

I have to say commuting is horrible in the winter. I can't wait to skip out into early sunlight rather than cold darkness and come back home in the light rather than grabbing my bag and speed walking back home for fear of men jumping out in the dark.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 08/02/2026 06:22

IWantNiceNeighbours · 07/02/2026 22:25

I'd like... light by 5am so I can enjoy my crack of dawn walk in the woods. Pitch black and a starry moonlit sky by 5pm! Perfect.

I'm the same, an early riser who loves dark evenings.

Rafting2022 · 08/02/2026 06:32

I fantasise about spending winter in the Arctic circle and follow several Instagram accounts to get a vicarious thrill from it.

I’d be happy with December timings all year round.

I’m with you-you always get polarised opinions on this but I like moderate times and temperatures! Best time of day: mid morning. Best temperature: light jumper weather. Best weather: sunny but not too hot.

I feel like most people would fall into this category if pressed. Sorry winter/summer lovers!

That said, I trained myself to find things to like about winter because otherwise you’re wishing half your life away. Haven’t quite managed the same with oppressively hot sweaty summer days yet though!

Sesma · 08/02/2026 06:36

This is all very cosy, has hot chocolate and throws been mentioned yet.

It’s the bleak MUD winter. And supposedly, the madness of Christmas is to help us get through this torment.

Hiding this thread, because every time someone moans about the summer, a sun fairy dies.

Yes, I'll try this, thanks. I think it's because I drink lots of teas and decaff coffee normally throughout the day. But when it's hot, I cant drink them so, even though I try to drink lots of water, I cant keep to the same quantity as normal.

Same here. Footpaths are rivers of mud. Local historic house is closed with three feet of water on the approach road. But I would be up for GMT year-round as long evenings are overrated. Early light mornings are better.

Sesma · 08/02/2026 06:50

A lot of people's lives in the winter aren't idyllic going to bed at 7 with soft music, they are coming home from work after a shift to a cold house and wet washing, nobody posts about that though, just cosy pjs and drinking chocolate

NeelyOHara · 08/02/2026 07:01

Yay, going to work when it’s dark, and leaving when it’s dark. So much fun! 👀
