To NOT like the evenings stretching...

I absolutely adore the dark nights and love it when the clocks go back in October, love driving home from work in the dark. Love lying in bed all cozy at 7pm looking up at the big, bright moon. Love being at home in the warm or going for a night walk and looking at everyone's Halloween decorations.

I don't like the lighter evenings! I find it harder to sleep, feel like I should be doing more or that everyone is doing something sociable and interesting. All the twats come out getting drunk in their gardens or blasting their shit music out and motorbikes revving about everywhere.

Fuck the light evenings... leave me in the winter!

I hate having artificial lights on and never switch any light on until I really need to. The only time I would have a light on during the day is if it is a very very dark overcast day and that happens very rarely.

Seriously?

It has been so dark and gloomy this winter I have had to have lights on during the day to be able to see to do my work.

@Fodencat no we don't want any more rain. The farmers can't start their planting and there have been floods in several areas. I wanted rain last year when our reservoirs were down to a trickle, but they are now full to the brim, and we now need a bit of dry weather.

I am an outdoorsy person but I don't enjoy being outside in the rain and neither do most people.

Our house is very light - one of the reasons we chose it. It already had a window each end of the living roomb but DH took one window out and put french doors in which made it even lighter. He also built an extension with a new kitchen in and it has windows the length of one wall and 2 large windows on another wall.

As I said, I hate artificial light.

I work on my computer a lot of the day and don't have any problem with light levels

Our house is very light as well, with french doors at one end of the living room and a window at the other end. I don't think you realise just how dark and gloomy the weather has been where we live. I'm also very short sighted and can't see well in low light, so I need the light on to work.

EnchantedDaytime · 09/02/2026 22:32

I like the ceiling bright lights for when I'm doing things like vacuuming, tidying, ironing or generally doing things. But prefer softer light behind me when I'm sitting reading, crocheting etc or watching telly (never watch in the dark). I've never heard the term big light anywhere except MN, it sounds silly to me.

edit to add our house is a terrace so we do need lights on during the day when it's gloomy or we are working or similar. I prefer natural light when it's available (and my preference is for about 18 hours of daylight).

We live in the Midlands and it has been dark and gloomy here - still don't need a light on though!

Well I do. You must have better eyesight than me.

I don't think people appreciate just how much light levels affect your eyesight when you are short sighted.

DappledThings · 10/02/2026 08:12

I need the light on in my working room year round. If the computer screen is the brightest light in the room it's hideous and that's the case most of the year.

Same in the actual office. Windows all round and high up so light isn't blocked by buildings much but overhead lights still need to be on.

I'm in the kitchen now and I could have the light off but it would definitely be gloomy and I have no desire to be in gloom whether that is from having no lights on or from using lamps instead of the proper light.

I’m allowed to like something different to you.

Exactly. I can't touch type and need to see the keyboard as well as the screen.

Of course you are allowed to like the rain but we have had more than enough this year. So many places near me flooded. People unable to get out of their houses because the road is flooded and, much worse, lots of houses flooded with everything ruined.

RampantIvy · 10/02/2026 13:47

This is today's weather, which is very similar to most of the weather we have been having this year.

I was listening to Paul Hudson (Look North, I live in South Yorkshire) today and have some random facts.

We are getting 4 minutes of extra daylight per day just now, which is nealy half an hour a week.

The weather station in Sheffield has recorded no minutes at all of sunshine so far this month.

While it has rained just about every day, we have only had a little more rain than average (14%), unlike other parts of the UK.

Light levels have been exceptionally low, and we should all be taking vitamin D.

A hot chocolate is for life, not just for Christmas

I was gonna pack mine away in spring but I reckon I'll keep it out and live like a seasonal renegade 🥰 ☕

In the summer, I've started to make iced chocolate. It's one of the few things I look forward to in summer! 🌞

The lady on the till in Tesco today was moaning about all the rain “has it stopped? When will it stop?” I don’t know. I love it. People always assume you must hate it because they do. Keep it coming, I say

@Fodencat

how? How can you love this endless dismal pissy rain we’ve had for days on end? Please answer as I’m genuinely curious!

It’s my preference. It means peace and quiet for us

@Fodencat

interesting. Why does it mean peace and quiet? And who is ‘us’?

see I hate having to wear the same shitty clothes with a hood, or having to lug an umbrella around with me. Or hair is ruined. The dark. The cold. I hate it all!

i was just asking you why. I’m curious at to why that’s your preference that all, what it is that you like about the rain. Chill out

mydogisthebest · 17/02/2026 15:37

Considering all the flooding and damage to crops done by the constant rain it is very selfish to hope it carries on

I agree.

Even when we were enjoying all the lovely hot weather last summer we still wished for some rain because we aren't selfish arseholes (regardless of our weather preferences).
