To NOT like the evenings stretching...

I absolutely adore the dark nights and love it when the clocks go back in October, love driving home from work in the dark. Love lying in bed all cozy at 7pm looking up at the big, bright moon. Love being at home in the warm or going for a night walk and looking at everyone's Halloween decorations.

I don't like the lighter evenings! I find it harder to sleep, feel like I should be doing more or that everyone is doing something sociable and interesting. All the twats come out getting drunk in their gardens or blasting their shit music out and motorbikes revving about everywhere.

Fuck the light evenings... leave me in the winter!

Weirdest thread ever.
How do you propose to stop the seasons changing.
Have you got anything you can influence to worry about 🙄

You are either really stupid or really horrible

Sesma · 08/02/2026 08:05

People on this thread probably would have liked the 70s when we played monopoly in the power cuts by candlelight

Not bored or lonely! Happily anti social... but for some reason in the summer it just makes me feel a bit guilty! I don't really know why. Social pressures I suppose, although you're right it doesn't matter what other people are doing so long as I'm happy!

There’s something in this. It’s not about what you’re doing but what you feel you should be doing.

I love summer myself but now I have small kids I have terrible FOMO about all the fun I could be having out and about, when in fact I’m just at home desperately trying to get them to sleep while the sun pours in the window at 8pm or later.

In winter I don’t feel so bad or sad about the things I’m not doing as everyone is doing less and most people are also just at home.

(yes I was one of those idiots who thought children ‘won’t change my life, I’ll just take them everywhere with me’ - but then had a massive reckoning when my eldest needed extreme consistency and predictability to thrive )

What temperatures and dawn and dusk times would everyone prefer?

I'd like:

6.30am dawn
20.00 dusk

15c minimum winter
22c maximum summer

Rain but only during the night 👌

That would suit me - get a chance to appreciate my garden during the week, being able to walk home from work without the risk of tripping or stepping in dog shit.
Sunrise a bit later perhaps.

Aphroditesangel · 08/02/2026 08:14

Maybe move to Scandinavia?

mamaduckbone · 08/02/2026 08:14

I find this fascinating - I’m the complete opposite and find the dark mornings and nights depressing and oppressive, especially when I’m driving to work in the dark and driving home in the dark. Give me a long, warm summer evening any day.
I do get what a pp said about morning birdsong and it being harder to sleep though, so my perfect times would be:
7am dawn
9pm dusk
i do love the range of temperatures throughout the year though, so wouldn’t change that. Just a bit less rain and grey please.

Why are you in bed at 7pm?

I go to bed at 7pm every night. It’s wonderful. I’m up at 5.45. I can’t see any value in just staying up for the sake of it when I could be relaxing in bed.

LunarEclipser · 08/02/2026 08:17

i am definitely a spring person but this year made a real effort to enjoy winter. Yes, sometimes with hot chocolate and cosy throws. Working with the season rather than raging against it 😁 it’s definitely been nicer than usual, but I’m finding it hard to be positive about the ongoing rain and all the mud on my walks to and from work!

Sartre · 08/02/2026 08:17

Agree regarding noise. DH and I joke that some of our neighbours hibernate from bonfire night until about May when it gets warmer. We don’t hear a peep from them at all then the sun comes out and they’re out having noisy bbqs every weekend. Pain in the arse, their taste in music is shit and one of them has a painful laugh.

Anxietyspiral · 08/02/2026 08:18

I'm counting the seconds until Spring 🥲

I love the light mornings, long summer evenings, feeling of sun on your skin, the garden not being a squishy bog, not having to wipe the dogs paws 15 times a day, beach days, butterflies, bbqs, walking outside without 5 layers of clothing on, and the beautiful English countryside in summer.

I do NOT enjoy my neighbours playing their shit music and drinking/smoking weed in the garden every day, but I live on a rundown council estate so unfortunately its par for the course. We're very lucky to live close to the beach and moors so go out as much as possible. The garden is just for birdfeeders and dog wees 😂

momager22 · 08/02/2026 08:20

I see where you’re coming from. I like going to bed early. Although I get up early so I’d prefer dark at 7pm and light at 5am.

How depressing. Between 7pm and 10:30 I eat dinner with my family and talk about our day, sometimes play a game and/ or watch a series together. I often do some knitting or crochet. That's on the days I don't go to choir (with dh) or pilates. If I went to bed at 7pm I'd feel like there was nothing in my day outside of work!

Gotmyoldshoeson · 08/02/2026 08:21

I agree! Except I hate driving in the dark.

But other than that, I love the dark. I love winter too.

i love going to bed in the dark.

i hate going to bed when it’s light ( I do go to bed early).

I do adjust to summer ( though not going to bed when it’s still light), and enjoy the good things about it, but I’m always glad as the seasons turn to Autumn and winter again. I rejoice when the longest day has past and feel a bit sad when the shortest day has past.

And no, I am not an anti-social mumsnet type. I just genuinely like winter.

RampantIvy · 08/02/2026 08:23

I think a lot of winter haters like me have really struggled with the depressingly low light levels, constant, rain, drizzle, fog and mist we have had so far this year. I wouldn't mind the dark evenings as much if the days were brighter and I could get my fix of being outside in proper daylight.

Yesterday I forced myself out for a short walk in the rain. It was an endurance test and not at all pleasurable, especially as I wear glasses.

However, today we have some blue sky - yay! so I am going to find a flooded reservoir to walk around.

As I am extremely short sighted I find it harder to see in low light levels and that is another reason I dislike winter so much.

I am with you on this. Last week I went to the theatre with some friends one evening and a meal out with some other friends on another evening. I also do a pilates class in the eveings and go to meetings with the charity I volunteer with. I love watching a good detective drama on TV and going to the cinema.

IceStationZebra · 08/02/2026 08:28

It’s too dark in the winter and too light in the summer. I much prefer countries where it’s reasonable all year round. Dark at 8pm is ideal!

LifeisLemons · 08/02/2026 08:30

Noo, I’m looking forward to Spring. Love the lighter mornings and evenings. I hate it when DS catches the school bus and it’s still dark when he leaves.

We live surrounded by fields and no nearby houses so we don’t suffer from noisy neighbours in the summer. The rutting animals in Spring can be quite noisy though. 😂

We never close our curtains downstairs as I like looking out across the fields and seeing twinkly lights in the distance and the stars at night.

user37597473785 · 08/02/2026 08:31

No - hate the rain, the cold, the dark.
Bring on daylight, sunshine, not having to put a coat on every time you step outside!

i basically like our variable seasons and weather and like experiencing it all.

I always close mine because they are light coloured and reflect the light back into the room. We have windows at the front of our living room and patio doors at the back and the room would feel much darker with the curtains open. Besides, I don't want people looking in from the front. It would make me feel to vulnerable.

EnchantedDaytime · 08/02/2026 07:35

I love the long hours of daylight in spring summer but not the heat. So my ideal would be
5am dawn
11pm dusk
Min -5°C in winter
Max 220C in summer to its not too hot for doing things outdoors (I love gardening).

Maybe we were lucky when the DCs were little but they were no bother getting to bed on light evenings and they didn't wake too early either.

I love keeping busy in the evenings, exercise, going to my allotment, socialising and it is all so much harder work in winter, the allotment is impossible, having to put on a thick coat and take an umbrella to walk 15 mins to the sports centre instead of just picking up a water bottle and going in summer, being able to sit in the pub garden instead of indoors. Also hate driving to work and back in the dark.

Loving your (assumed) typo of 220°C in summer being the perfect temp for someone who doesn't like the heat 😂😂

Made me chuckle.

But if your hobbies were reading or watching TV (or even with knitting, crochet etc I guess) that could be done in bed, you'd still have that time after work. It just looks different to your evening.

People are allowed to be different without being called depressing.

I get to be smug all year round! I love the changing seasons, and every season has its own 'thing' going on.

The one thing I always hate though is the switch to BST. This probably belongs on an 'unpopular opinion' post, but I'd like year-round GMT.

I would like GMT all year too. Light till 9pm is just about OK although still a bit disconcerting. Still light at 10pm I find really irritating.

I usually enjoy winter but this year has been testing. Kudos to you for perseverance in trying to find the positives in such a hard winter to do it.

cavapoopoopoo · 08/02/2026 08:38

I despise it when it gets dark at 4-5pm - it is literally the most depressing time of the entire year. You can't even see the damn moon for being battered by biting wind and lashing rain- fcking miserable.

Light evenings give me life- light, balmy evenings where the sky turns that beautiful shade of dusky pink and everything seems beautiful and possible. That's where joy is for me.

Girlintheframe · 08/02/2026 08:39

I love both! By the time winter comes to an end I’m happy for summer to come and visa versa.

I love everything you’ve described but by March I’m looking forward to summer evenings and being more active. Winter makes me feel like I’m hibernating and summer like I’ve blossoming again.
