To NOT like the evenings stretching...

I absolutely adore the dark nights and love it when the clocks go back in October, love driving home from work in the dark. Love lying in bed all cozy at 7pm looking up at the big, bright moon. Love being at home in the warm or going for a night walk and looking at everyone's Halloween decorations.

I don't like the lighter evenings! I find it harder to sleep, feel like I should be doing more or that everyone is doing something sociable and interesting. All the twats come out getting drunk in their gardens or blasting their shit music out and motorbikes revving about everywhere.

Fuck the light evenings... leave me in the winter!

Well I don’t know if it’s anything to be smug about, no one can vindictively control seasons to their liking to spite anyone else’s preferences!!
I like both tbh, love the hot weather and the long days and equally love the shorter days with the dark evenings. I’m busy and out and about whether it’s light or dark, I make the best out of what I’m dealt and get on with my life regardless. As a stupidly early riser and also someone who struggles to sleep before 1am I quite enjoy seeing the very subtle changes every day.
The one thing I do hate about the summer though is ‘birdsong’ - all we hear from our bedroom is angry magpies! It’s less sing song and more furious ‘barking’ sounds - when they start piping up at 4am it’s quite tedious!

What temperatures and dawn and dusk times would everyone prefer?

I'd like:

6.30am dawn
20.00 dusk

15c minimum winter
22c maximum summer

Rain but only during the night 👌

You're not far off, but I prefer the September-ish times of 7-7.30 dawn and dusks.

I can probably do 10 degrees in winter and I would definitely say summer maximum 22 except when I went to go to our nearby outdoor pool, then I'd like ~28, but only whilst I'm actually there 🤣

I actually don't mind a bit of light rain, particularly in the summer. But definitely less of this torrential winter rain!

Haha I thought I was the only weirdo who has a veeeeeery narrow range of comfortable temperatures! Although I do enjoy defying the cold, if that makes sense. I have a vast collection of scarves and gloves. And I do like a cold room to sleep in, so if it could just go down to 5°C at night, and I'll have the window open.
Lightish by 6am so getting up isn't so hard - don't care what time it gets dark.

And while we're at it, can we slow the rotation of the Earth down a bit? I would like to sleep 9 hours, and be awake for 18, and not get out of synch with everything 😆

Doryismyspiritanimal · 07/02/2026 22:33

I have found my people. Blanket, hot drink, book, darkness. I really noticed the lighter evenings round here this week and just got that sinking feeling in my stomach. That rain can get in the bin though now.

NASA says the rotation of the Earth is slowing down 🫠 but only a teeny bit

Aww I hate the dark nights.....thank god we are almost at the end🙌🏻

Squirrelsnut · 07/02/2026 22:43

God, I'd emigrate if we had permanent short, dark, grey days. I can appreciate the change of tempo in winter but I'm heartily sick of it by now.

maybe dawn and dusk both an hour later - I’m not an early riser and it annoys me when the sun wakes me, plus I enjoy a last dog walk after dinner. Those temperatures sound good though.

My house has a flat roof, and you can really hear the magpies tapdancing on the roof in the mornings. And the wood pigeons (the fat bastards 😂)

Couple of years ago, one of the magpies had a two-week feud with a neighbourhood cat during the summer. Followed the cat around, shouting at him, trying to sneak up on him and pull his tail, that sort of thing. It was hilarious but also somewhat annoying. One morning, I woke up at 5am to the sound of angry magpie cackles, and stuck my head out of the window to see what was going on. There's the cat, on my front lawn, pretending he's not there, and there's the magpie swooping around, telling him off. I gave them a good sharp "kssss" in the hope that they would take their argument further away from my bedroom window. What I got instead was the magpie looking at me, looking at the cat, flying up to the roof of my porch to screech directly at me from about four feet away, looking from me to the cat and back at me repeatedly, and then flying back down to hassle the cat further.

I have no idea if the magpie was asking for backup, or alerting me to the cat, or just taking time out of one fight to pick another 😂

I'd like... light by 5am so I can enjoy my crack of dawn walk in the woods. Pitch black and a starry moonlit sky by 5pm! Perfect.

Weirdo 🤣

RampantIvy · 07/02/2026 22:46

YABU. Are you a vampire?

I love summer and the long, light evenings when I can potter in the garden deadheading roses snd breathing in the scent of honeysuckle.

We have quiet neighbours and there are no children in our road.

The exceptionally low light levels are getting me down. Our solar panels are hardly generating any electricity and we have to have the lights on all day. It hasn't stopped raining for ages and a short walk in the rain is an endurance test.

I can't wait for spring and summer.

I take it I can't expect 27-hour days in my lifetime? I'm disappointed.

Oh god I hate everything you have described and am loving the nights getting lighter at last.

Me too! Winter is like a prison and spring the release. I bloody love it!

I've lived abroad for 20 years in a hot country and I haven't decided what's worse - three months of hell in the summer or six months of a British winter 😑😅 Spring and autumn here are lovely, winters are hit and miss. We do have longer days in the winter though - light at 6.30am and dark at 5pm so the SAD is nowhere near as bad as in the UK.

Slowing the rotation of the earth down - there's a really good novel about this!

gototogo · 07/02/2026 22:54

I love lighter evenings, so much nicer. We do far more active things when it’s light too. Off to never ending light this midsummer, i love it not getting dark at all

SliceofTosst · 07/02/2026 22:59

Dawn 7am
Dusk 10pm

Low down to minus 2 - sun with no wind or rain though
High - 27 but don't mind overcast or some rain and of course some breeze is nice.

Both extremes can be beautiful.

Funnily enough I shook hands with someone recently and he said "wow your hands are cold!"

I like the summer days but find it hard getting any work done when it's too hot. I love sleeping in winter, maybe September would be the best weather as someone mentioned. Not too hot and gets dark at just the right time.

The birds can f off they start about 4 am here in the summer, one time I woke up and tried to chase them away. Can't wear earplugs either as need to hear the kids!

BerryTwister · 07/02/2026 23:02

How old are you OP? I’m 58 and I find driving in the dark much harder than I used to, especially when it’s raining.

StarDolphins · 07/02/2026 23:05

I just hate the sun shining through the windows highlighting how much I need to up my cleaning! It looks so much better in the winter.

bornintelligent · 07/02/2026 23:08

As someone who actually has to earn a living ,I am so looking forward to driving an hour each way to work without the darkness. I work a 12 hour shift and it is horrible feeling tired after a night shift driving in the dark .

Bathbrushes · 07/02/2026 23:09

Wth?
I’d have it light by 6am and until 9.30-10 all year round if possible. Maybe a few weeks of darker evenings from Halloween until Christmas then light again from January.

This! The fecking windows, especially the ruddy huge sliding ones out to the garden. Heinous.

And the fecking birds! Magpies nesting in our big tree can feck right off, especially when they spy a local cat! I had to go indoors so many times last year & abandon my hammock - the blissful thing about summer is my hammock.

Alpacajigsaw · 07/02/2026 23:16

YABU to moan about this in February when it’s still dark just after 5pm. If it were June you might have a point (although I would still disagree with you as I love the light nights).
