To NOT like the evenings stretching...

I absolutely adore the dark nights and love it when the clocks go back in October, love driving home from work in the dark. Love lying in bed all cozy at 7pm looking up at the big, bright moon. Love being at home in the warm or going for a night walk and looking at everyone's Halloween decorations.

I don't like the lighter evenings! I find it harder to sleep, feel like I should be doing more or that everyone is doing something sociable and interesting. All the twats come out getting drunk in their gardens or blasting their shit music out and motorbikes revving about everywhere.

Fuck the light evenings... leave me in the winter!

This is me, OP. I love the way everything changes to a lower gear in Sept. I adore autumn and winter. England is so good at these seasons, so crap at summers - esp the heatwaves.

Both me and DH hate overhead lights. We have quite a lot of lamps in our living room, dining room and bedroom.

How can you "hate" overhead lights? They are just lights. Confused

😮😮😮

You can definitely hate overhead lights!

My DS gets seasonal depression. Drs always assumed it's SAD but like you, totally hates summer and the long interminable days. I get summer depression as well but I always assumed it was the lack of things to do and my birthday.

I love the nights drawing in but don’t mind them drawing out either. I don’t like it getting light so early in the summer! I also don’t like it being dark til almost 8am in the winter….

I haven't seen the moon yet this year because it's been too overcast or wet. I haven't seen my own shadow either.

If I walk to work, I have mud splats up the back of my legs by the time I get there.

I did some gardening yesterday and my lawn is now pulverised to mud because I walked on it. I have some lovely snowdrops, primroses and cyclamen, but I hardly get chance to enjoy them because of the muddy lawn and being dark when I'm not at work.

My favourite running routes are impassably muddy with shin-deep mud.

On dull days that don't get beyond twighlight, I walk to work at twighlight and go home in twighlight. I then have to turf myself out of the house later in the evening in full darkness. Mid-week runs are all in the dark whether they are before or after work. 6am feels like any point of the night (god bless lumie clocks)

10⁰C today has felt perilously close to being pleasant after that 5⁰C damp chill that gets into your bones that we've had for weeks. My nose is perpetually cold and normally dripping. There's cold draughts blowing into the house and keeping the log burner fuelled requires traipsing wood into the house to keep it stocked. All the washing has to go through the dryer and backs up because it can't go on the line and struggles to dry on the airer.

Going out requires more assessment of which coat and footwear is best for that individual weather. No sliding sandals on, you have to find the socks that work for the shoes/ boots and then lace them up. Mud gets walked into the house, and the car gets filthy (and too cold to want to clean out)

Everything is just physically and mentally harder and faffier when it's cold, wet and dark. Plus muscles sieze up and go tight easily.

It's telling that the people that love these conditions and whinge when we get to the moderation of 15⁰C and 12 hours of daylight tend to not bother leaving the house or seeing much of other people anyway. It's fine to be an introvert. Own it. Light and warmth don't oblige you to be an extrovert.

I don't think being introverted and liking the dark nights are linked as much as you think.

I'd say I'm pretty introverted, and I have to be "social" a lot at work because it involves running meetings, collecting information from multiple departments and presenting, so outside of work I tend to recharge.

I love the winter for being able to curl up with a book without any "expectations" to do much else. But I also love it for those bright, crisp, cold days that we get. They're my favourite dog walking days. I love Christmas and the family being round and all the lights. Halloween is great, bonfire night minus the stress is causes the dog, love it.

I love spring for new life and sunnier days, the anticipation of summer and the extra light and warmth. I love summer for the long days and I spend those evenings pottering round my garden or taking the dog for an extended walk. I love autumn for the colours and everything starting to come back to being cosy.

This winter has been hard with all the rain and mud. Even I, as someone who usually enjoys it (as I do every season, I see the positives), have really struggled and felt a bit miserable. But that's nothing to do with whether I'm an introvert or not.

People keep saying this, but have yet to provide a reason for this hate.

Womaninhouse17 · 09/02/2026 07:49

@BogRollBOGOF In my case it's nothing to do with being an introvert or extrovert. I see just as many people whether it's light in the evenings or not. I don't know why you seem to accuse some people of making an excuse and trying to hide being an introvert.

They cast a hard light on the room, whereas wall lights or table lamps give a 'softer', more welcoming light. They are just too 'in your face'. I have removed all ceiling lights in my house.

One person's softer is another's murky. I've never been in a room lit only by lamps or wall lights that felt adequately lit and not like sitting in gloom.

I would have to add proper ceiling lights to any room that didn't have them to be comfortable.

frozendaisy · 09/02/2026 09:00

I prefer our teens travelling to/from college and school in the light, they don’t care but I feel more reassured.
Also they go and hang out with friends more after school when it’s light, and that social aspect is good for them.

As the days lighten, weather warms and should get drier there are more options for many people of all ages to get out, be out and socialise - and some of the time it those days that help form friendships which carry you through the winter (when you enjoy someone’s company enough to have them at home)

We don’t mind the winter nights when it’s clear we are happy to get telescope out. But also see the many benefits of daylight before and after school and work.

Nothing we can do about it, the planet turns and goes round the sun each year. It’s a connection to that journey.

They are harsh and too bright. If you put a lower wattage in they look a bit silly.

We have 5 lamps in our living room and, depending on what we are doing, we might have them all on or none. We like to watch tv in the dark.

Daftypants · 09/02/2026 09:35

I like the lighter evenings , I don’t have the luxury of being able to lie in my bed at 7pm !!!
I am usually finishing up dinner , loading dishwasher, cleaning up kitchen, taking dog for his 2nd walk , helping my disabled daughter, folding dry laundry , general tidying up as with a family here it gets untidy quickly.
I am not as keen on daylight streaming in through my bedroom windows in the middle of the night ( I’m in the north 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿) …but I have added blinds to filter that so waking at 7ish to 7.30 is ideal

heatwaves are brilliant! Hoping we’re going to get loads this summer! 🤞 need to make up for this awful, cold, pissy weather we’ve had for weeks

For me it depends on the time of day, I like over head lights during the day, and use the yellow toned which are not harsh. In the evening I have my side lights on. And dislike a bright room

but everyone is different. A friend of mine keeps her ceiling lights on all the time, even at night, I find it too bright, and my sil has everything really dark at night, she will max have one soft glow corner light, which means when socialising you can’t see each other. Thay doesn’t work for me either, and I even when not socialising I don’t want to sit in the dark at night where I can’t actually see my families facial expressions.

so for me, ceiling lights during the day, soft side lights in the evening. I have dimmable bulbs and dim tnem when watching tv when it gets to about 9pm but we can still see each other and what we are doing. If chatting I have them brighter, and also earlier in the evening.

i think this is one of those things where we all like what we like and find other people’s likes when it differs a bit odd.

TaterTots68 · 09/02/2026 10:39

Ah I'm the opposite. I love the lighter evenings when I get home from work and it's not like the middle of the night. We can go fishing in the evening and the extra daylight makes me feel happier. Also I hate driving in the dark so there's that!

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 09/02/2026 10:51

I’m in Spain at the moment. I’m aware that they’ve had a lot more rain than normal, and it was pretty horrible on Saturday but yesterday it was lovely, some sunshine, around 17 degrees and light until 7 pm. Looks like similar today 🤞

What temperatures and dawn and dusk times would everyone prefer?

I'd like:

6.30am dawn
20.00 dusk

15c minimum winter
22c maximum summer

Rain but only during the night 👌

Yes this sounds about perfect

When you say you like overhead lights during the day do you actually mean when it is daylight?

I hate having artificial lights on and never switch any light on until I really need to. The only time I would have a light on during the day is if it is a very very dark overcast day and that happens very rarely.

We have chosen all our houses for how light they are. DH's parents lived in such a dark house that they had to have a light on all day in their living room and I hated spending time there as it made me feel so depressed. I could never live in an old cottage with small windows

Fodencat · 09/02/2026 15:36

The lady on the till in Tesco today was moaning about all the rain “has it stopped? When will it stop?” I don’t know. I love it. People always assume you must hate it because they do. Keep it coming, I say

I have a fairly modern house and the living room has a wall that's basically windows.

However, it faces NW and is set on an incline, so through the winter, when the sun doesn't get very high, it's not murky dark but it's not light enough to get away without the lights on most of the time.

Through the summer it's grand, you only need the lights on in one half of the L shaped kitchen, if you're in there doing something. Really light.

We chose our house for the location and the potential of the plot for extending. If we'd also gone for the way light came in, the location would have been much worse than here.

Poppy61 · 09/02/2026 15:40

I hate a 'big light'/overhead light too. Very nasty and uncomfortable. Equally, I appreciate that some people like/need the Big Light/overhead light.
