To NOT like the evenings stretching...

I absolutely adore the dark nights and love it when the clocks go back in October, love driving home from work in the dark. Love lying in bed all cozy at 7pm looking up at the big, bright moon. Love being at home in the warm or going for a night walk and looking at everyone's Halloween decorations.

I don't like the lighter evenings! I find it harder to sleep, feel like I should be doing more or that everyone is doing something sociable and interesting. All the twats come out getting drunk in their gardens or blasting their shit music out and motorbikes revving about everywhere.

Fuck the light evenings... leave me in the winter!

OP, I feel the same. The light evenings taunt me - I feel I should be out doing something when all I want to do is hole up at home!

EnchantedDaytime · 07/02/2026 23:23

Oh no, if I had my way there would be 18 hours of daylight everyday, 5am to 11pm to cover both ends. Everything about daylight is nicer.

Dawn 7am
Dusk 10pm

Low down to minus 2 - sun with no wind or rain though
High - 27 but don't mind overcast or some rain and of course some breeze is nice.

Both extremes can be beautiful.

Agree with all of this

Thus. I might have said low of 0. The British wind and rain do make me want to hunger down, but a good crisp cold day is another feeling entirely

Oh god I hate everything you have described and am loving the nights getting lighter at last.

Same here. The yearning for the dark and cosy gets earlier every year. We're nowhere near the clocks going forward yet.

There was a thread on here about four months ago with summer lovers complaining about dark nights and I felt smug as fuck. I ain't giggling now! It's your turn to be smug!

The nights are still dark.

Roll on summer.

TaffetaPhrases · 07/02/2026 23:34

Jeez I don’t understand you lot at all.
can”t wait for the end of this rain and the grey and the dark. It’s felt like such a long winter; I am desperate for some sun and warmth

HappiestSleeping · 07/02/2026 23:38

I couldn't really care about light or dark but the sound of rain beating against the windows is really getting tedious.

Love the light evenings.

How can you love the dark and cold, its fucking depressing. Roll on summer i can't wait.

What temperatures and dawn and dusk times would everyone prefer?

I'd like:

6.30am dawn
20.00 dusk

15c minimum winter
22c maximum summer

Rain but only during the night 👌

Minimum 22, maximum 27.

Light from 6AM, dark 21.30.

only to rain at night. But I wouldn’t mind a full on tropical downpour at night as long as it was all bright and sunny in the morning.

I absolutely hate the cold and dark. There is nothing good about cold, dark and grey weather- absolutely nothing

Single adult living alone?

I suppose the long evenings are more tolerable if you can just get into bed and read a book for two hours.

I have spent the last few weeks transporting small children inc baby on foot in the pitch black and pouring rain every evening. Yay.

Edited

I always found the dark nights easier when the children were younger. They were much more inclined to sleep at bedtime when it was dark. So by 7/7.30 they were fast asleep and I loved getting warm in bed to watch something.

Rottedtheanemones · 07/02/2026 23:50

I prefer summer to winter but I prefer dark nights too. We live next to a park that we have to pass on the way home from school, when it gets dark early we can go to the park for a bit and then every one leaves to get on with their evenings. In summer it is hard to move on quickly because there are always school friends there, so we have the battle of we can't go every night or the battle when we need to leave. Then getting DC to sleep at 7pm is a nightmare when there are DC playing in the park until 8 or 9pm. The DC sleep much better at the moment as they aren't woken up by the light mornings. I would like a nice warm day with darkness by 5pm 😂

beasmithwentworth · 07/02/2026 23:50

I despise winter and darkness. November to April are to be got through with gritted teeth as far as I’m concerned. I really have attempted every year to try and embrace / appreciate the colder darker months but I’m just pretending to myself in an attempt to conjure up some positivity.

What on earth is there to like about winter apart from the odd beautiful crisp sunny day? I do like hot chocolate and a blanket but that’s the extent of it. Getting up in the dark, working until it’s dark, huge heating bills, not feeling like doing anything, shit cold weather..

Then comes spring and summer 😊

Waking up and it’s light, the sun on your face, time to do things in the evening, early morning swimming at the lido, drying washing outside, sitting in a beer garden with a glass of rosé.. and most people are just happier.

I am very happy for those who like winter but it goes to show how polarised we are in our opinions. I cannot fathom liking winter more than the summer months and I’m sure it’s vice versa.

Weirdest thread ever.
How do you propose to stop the seasons changing.
Have you got anything you can influence to worry about 🙄

BauhausOfEliott · 07/02/2026 23:58

I don’t like light evenings at all. I want it dark by 6pm at the latest.

I don’t go to bed early, though; I’m a night owl.

Oh, do bore off. Nobody’s suggesting they can change anything. People are allowed to like and dislike things; there’s nothing ‘weird’ about expressing preferences.

Livpool · 08/02/2026 00:03

As it has been dark for about 7 weeks disagree. You can draw curtains and go to bed at 8 in the summer but you can’t ‘create’ a light evening of 7:30
in the winter

I agree, OP. I cant stand the long, light nights either. I really hate the heat and not being able to sleep.

TheGrimSmile · 08/02/2026 00:11

I also get cystitis a lot during the summer months.

I bloody love the seasons. Dark days are (soon) over, Spring will soon be sprung’ing and summer lovin’ is on its way before all the leaves turn brown (again).

Cherrytree86 · 08/02/2026 00:17

You’ll find your people here, OP. Loads and loads of people who live nothing more than staying home with their little family and getting cozy in pj’s with hot choccy and who hate going out and getting dressed. It’s so bizarre and really not healthy. Going to work and coming home to curl up on sofa or bed is sooooo sedentary….like when do they exercise??
