https://www.gov.uk/government/news/400-cash-boost-for-disabled-adults-to-tackle-cost-of-living#:~:text=Government%20is%20increasing%20the%20amount,helping%20to%20ease%20financial%20pressures

Government is increasing the amount that working-age adults who receive social care must be able to keep after paying for home care (known as the minimum income guarantee) by 7% from April 2026 - strengthening this safety net to ensure that people have enough for daily expenses and helping to ease financial pressures.

I am guessing without reading that it still swerves the many tens of thousands of spouses who can't work due to their caring duties ?

Of course. Another 100% strike rate for Janes Law.

There is something obscene about a supposed care system that will spend £100,000 a year on a private company rather than £6,000 a year to a relative.

Openly racist is correct. This is horrible.

Most Halal is stunned anyway, and all could be.

Kosher is a different sorting hat, as I understand it.

A time when you fondled your lamb before slaughtering it in front of the children?

I do! And I used to love visiting the place they filmed it when I lived out west. As I recall it all fell apart because they couldn’t accept the level of risk involved in the children’s lives if they lived in any way authentically.

Orr is not only a mate of Vance, he's a fan of Thiel.
Against abortion in any circumstance.

Billionaire networks of right wing goons.
How anyone can imagine they will do anything positive for women choices, I dont know.

Duncin that article is bloody frightening & extremely depressing.

Edited

Well you'd never make it these days. Not if you announced what you were doing in advance. Unless you disguised it as Reforms social care policy.

I have never had occasion to slaughter my own food. But if it were needed (especially if my family needed feeding) then give me the tools and instruction and consider it done.

A friend from Uni decided to live the rural (Devizes ?) idyll and raise their family there. When there was a pile-in for there 50th birthday, we were treated to freshly laid eggs for the Sunday brunch. I helped one of the daughters collect the eggs and was regaled with tales of how she (very much at home with "country living") had to finish off a chicken after "Dad managed to mess it up". I was told that you can't afford to be "a pansy" (exact quote from a Gen Z-er) when it comes to the neck snap.

Kids eh ?

Yep, right wing men using religion to prop up their power grab.

I read this yesterday and spent much of the time thinking 'I bet I met her on a MN Covid thread'.

What time period are they promoting with that image?

Time to crack out my favourite recently learned word again: anemoia - the yearning for a time in the past that one has never actually experienced.

Isn't that just nostalgia ?

Piggywaspushed · 18/02/2026 16:58

No, because with nostalgia you look back on something you have experienced.

Not according to the Restyroform lobby. Everything was apparently bloomin' marvellous in olden days.

Piggywaspushed · 18/02/2026 17:09

Yes, that's because they are encouraging anemoia!

Sounds like Reform now want to out Restore, Restore.
Depressing.

PandoraSocks · 18/02/2026 19:16

Reform and Restore are tearing chunks out of each other on X.

A time when you fondled your lamb before slaughtering it in front of the children?

Had to calm my young kids down and speak nicely to my neighbour in the 90s when they saw him skinning a rabbit on the doorstep - not one of theirs in their hutch thank goodness, but lamping was popular in the Derbyshire village even after it was essential for some.
I say 90s but I also say those villages are 50 years behind the rest so not so unusual perhaps - nothing I’d seen before, or wanted to see or think about, but I do have some understanding of the view that if you want to eat it then maybe you should be prepared to be in at the slaughter.
However, and sadly, none of us were dressed or smiling like the Enid Blyton picture there - neither did our countryside look so lovely 🤷🏼‍♀️

persephonia · 18/02/2026 20:05

During WW2 there was an ill fated scheme that involved giving families rabbits with the idea that they could feed them scraps etc/grass and then slaughter them for protein when they were fat enough. Part of trying to manage the blockade like rationing and allotments etc.
Unfortunately, even back then the average suburban families were not aware of the golden rule around not giving pets names and as a result very few of the bunnies actually made it onto the table. Think traumatised children sobbing because the family pet is due to be dinner now.

On the other hand my dad used to shoot rabbits and we are them so I wasn't traumatised by it as a child (90s). They weren't pets though. But I don't think kids of any era would have been gathered round the lamb adoringly presumably just before they stun it and kill it in line with humane Christian traditions at any time period.

countrygirl99 · 18/02/2026 20:15

FIL used to show rabbits. He used to sell any that definitely wouldn't make show grade for pets but once they were adults there wasn't any market so if they didn't make the grade they were eaten. My boys grew up on bunny casseroles.

‘This is what a rich boy’s playground looks like’ theme.
So like playground threads on here.

Whilst on X I nearly fell for that ‘election now’ con trick but with the London mayor - so much about Laila Cunningham (unfortunate name considering) being mayoral candidate- stupid me.

itsgettingweird · 18/02/2026 20:46

Reform is ex Tory MPs and Restore is ex reform MPs.

The tearing chuck about of each other to race even further right will
hopefully be us watching their fall off the cliff at the far (right) side!
