The u-turn line is already getting an extensive airing.

At least it stops the whining for now. But no doubt there will be whining about the cost of having more elections once the reorganisation process is completed.

placemats · 16/02/2026 15:51

Zack Polanski has welcomed the u-turn. The LibDems have called for a law change on the matter.

Sorry, what does that even mean .?

placemats · 16/02/2026 16:22

The law change or Polanski?

Farage will declare it a victory for him!

Eta: oh, he already is!

Edited

He'd better get a move on and sort out their vetting process......

Their Warringtob councillor has defected to the Tories

The law change or Polanski?

What "law change" do the LibDems want to see ?

(For future reference I've never expected much sense from the Greens since the 80s).

Notonthestairs · 16/02/2026 17:01

So it was fine for the Conservatives to postpone county/district council elections in 2019?

And it was fine for the Conservatives to postpone county/district council elections in 2021?

But not fine now?

DuncinToffee · 16/02/2026 17:03

In 2019, Farage's party stood down, didn't they? Not sure about 2021

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 16/02/2026 17:10

So Farage didn’t care too much about postponed elections when Bannon’s mate was PM.

About to do pancake day a day early as daughter is off to cat sit and made a special request. I'm gladly honouring that.

Thanks for the reminder, I will have to get some bacon and syrup in tomorrow.

OK, so now it's ok to flee your homeland, because you're afraid for your safety, and seek refuge in another Country?

Glad we cleared that one up...

Touche !

What do we think?

Wonder if Reform and other anti-ECHR parties used Article 3 of the First Protocol ECHR (the right to elections) in their legal arguments against cancellation.

OP posts:
cardibach · 16/02/2026 17:53

I'm surprised abput the legal advice to be honest. Postponing them seems more sensible. Yup, I bet they used ECHR.

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/02/2026 18:13

I know nobody has ever accused Tommeh of being the sharpest tool in the box, but if you were in fear of your life and fleeing wouldn’t it be more sensible not to publicise it? Certainly don’t start filming in easily identifiable public airports. It’s a bit of a give away.

pointythings · 16/02/2026 18:34

I'm actually not that bothered about the cancellation or not, even though I'm in an affected area. We were going to get a Reform led council anyway, because this is an area full of right wing flag shagging Brexity numpties.

It's just a shame we're likely to lose our local independents, who have been excellent and have actually done something for our town.

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/02/2026 18:39

I think we ended up with 3 last local election. They fell out with each other within a week and I’m not sure how many are still with reform. 2 is definitely now independent. 1 I think is now independent and I’m not sure about the third.

Apparently I’m now already in a reform area after Braverman defected!

I can only hope that she’s now voted out - although I’m not sure we are due the local elections this time round

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/02/2026 19:13

You’ve sort of already lost by having Braverman as your MP whichever party she is in.

DuncinToffee · 16/02/2026 19:23

No need to call the IMF yet

Rachel Reeves is on course to secure a windfall from the falling cost of the UK’s debt-interest payments for the first time since she became chancellor of the exchequer

I believe the Cons postponed 6 council elections but the councils were abolished before polling day.

I do not understand what is going on at Labour HQ, Starmer was on Jeremy Vine at lunch time saying "No more U-turns"

He must surely have known about this "u-turn" due to legal advice (i assume he did?) and why the change, has the law changed? was the initial advice from McSweeney?

The Munich conference, completely drowned out, as is increased defence spend announcement.

placemats · 16/02/2026 21:00

It's not a u-turn 😂
