Yeah, I subscribed to the Telegraph because I wanted to avoid being trapped in an echo chamber and it used to be reasonable quality journalism even if the political takes were completely different to mine. But I'm cancelling because the actual quality of journalism is so piss poor. I can read that in the Daily Star for free.

In a way I'm glad that Ratcliffe has put his hate filled head above the parapet like this because DH, in a quest for UK owned cleaning products, bought some of their bathroom cleaner as it's made fairly local to us. It gets right on my chest.

I'd heard that the owner was a monumental bellend but hadn't put 2 and 2 together until now.

FT is reporting that Musk istalking with allies how to oust Starmer as UK prime minister before next election

Shades of Bannon, Johnson, RJM

And I would add Chris Mason

This the same Musk that Tiny Tom platformed saying the time for fighting is now?
Seems he’s looked at the Epstein info and found ‘talks’ (bribes) with Bannon et Al may work better to achieve results - so less Advance more Reform backing now? Though I’ll own that I’m not even sure tbh why Musk is so invested in it all.
Disgusting this stuff happens - mind blowing that our ‘patriots’ like rich Americans/South Africans sorting the U.K. for them!

MsJinks · 12/02/2026 13:07

@Evenstar- just thinking of you - be kind to yourself.
And if you ever think MN may help I’d try carers/elderly parents forums rather than AIBU - think you already know this probably! - but I found both help and a place to retain sanity there when it was all too much with nowhere to go IRL.

Jeremy Kyle was presenting that Reform event, nough said

This is straight out of the maga handbook

This is pretty menacing.

Sarah Pochin wrote to Bangor's university student run debating society requesting that she attend to "answer questions from students."

When they said "no" Reform rolled all it's tanks onto the lawns and said they'll cut funding to the entire university if they win.

Do they also complain about the curling?

I need to recheck our nationality laws - it seems a bit complex.
I ‘think’ if you’re from Scotland/Wales/NI and win then you’re British. If you don’t win then you remain Scottish/Welsh/Irish - however, if your team member is S/W/I but you are English, then if you lose you can attain S/W/I nationality along with them.
If you are English but perhaps brown/have an accent, then if you win you get to stay English and British, but if you lose you are a national of a different continent (not usually just country), but I am not sure what happens if you’re S/W/I and brown/‘foreign accent’ - you may just remain S/W/I or you may belong to a different continent - or both 🤷🏼‍♀️

Musk has many reasons to be interested in the UK:

  1. Digital services tax, government intervention over AI child porn and other attempts to either tax or restrain the activities of the tech bros. The fear is once one country does others can follow suit, so it's in their interests to go after the UK and EU governments
  2. He considers himself part English/invested in the UKs future
  3. Weird racist Americans have a thing about "Englishness". The first "real" Americans came from there as opposed to the immigrants from elsewhere polluting the country. It's a part of their identity
  4. A sort of love/hate thing because of the British empire. Britain used to have an empire but lost it so it's contemptible.

He always struck me as a Temu knock of of Cecil Rhodes. Rhodes and the Nazis also had a weird thing about the fate of America, the English and the Germanic peoples being intertwined.

Ratcliffe has issued a non aoplogy apology

You all will be pleased know that Isabel from Dubai wasn't offended by his original comments,

It amuses me that Ratcliffe is whining about colonisation in the UK and providing made up figures to justify it, yet he has become an immigrant to a country where nearly 76% of the residents are immigrants.

MsJinks · 12/02/2026 13:32

@persephonia - thank you - that’s really helpful - I often just thought it was some weird I’m important rubbish, but now I see his reasons (excuses)
I can understand the cash for sure, but the weird Brit things, whilst a good explanation I can grasp, will still remain weird for me.
Tiny Tom has another nasty March in May - wonder whether Musk et Al will join. I think now that I remember that Bannon should have joined the last one but didn’t, but I’m not sure why. Wonder if they’ll back Advance or be more realistic with Reform to maybe get a foothold, or just enjoy the chaos and hate filled uber right rhetoric they can stir up. Obviously none of this sounds fun or good 😞

LittleBowSheep · 12/02/2026 13:33

The tax-avoiding immigrant of Monaco seems to think that a sentence containing the word sorry equates to an apology. What an odious git he is.

I could rant about this all day.

You might have noticed that historians have mostly stopped using the word "Anglo Saxon" and use the word "old English" more frequently now.
It's because while Anglo Saxon can be a race/tribe (the Angles and the Saxons) it was used more commonly in British history to mean the time period/ language of 450-1066 AD. But because Americans of a certain political bent were using "Anglo-Saxon" to talk about racial identity (and completely misunderstanding the history of the period as well) it became a loaded word. So there was pressure on UK byhistorians/historical societies to switch to Old English to avoid looking like far right types. It's kind of annoying though small in the scheme of things. There was a bit of a hoo haha about it s few years back. https://www.varsity.co.uk/news/27596

It was seen as a reaction to left wing "waecnende" pressure. But that only came about because of right wing nuttiness. I do resent in general the way American craziness has to infect discourse here and Musk (and American fanboys like Konstantin Kissin) are a much bigger threat to English culture and identity than Muslims or immigrants.

Cambridge journal faces backlash for dropping ‘Anglo-Saxon’ from title

One historian labelled the University 'total drips' for the decision

The government is set to ban foreign companies from giving donations to political parties under new legislation.

Why not a blanket ban on any donations that are not from a UK taxpayer - company or individual ?

PandoraSocks · 12/02/2026 14:48

Excellent news!

I just found some very interesting ONS stats (via a post on X)about economic inactivity. May prove useful at some point so popping the charts here. Link below, you can use timescales back to 1971.

you can use timescales back to 1971.

Why ?

Even comparing 2021 to 2026 won't create much understanding. Let alone figures from over half a century ago.

cardibach · 12/02/2026 15:15

Ah @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats ypu are making a very common error. He’s not an immigrant. He’s an ex-pat. Totally different thing.

There may be party members on reduced membership fees who don’t pay tax?

InMySpareTime · 12/02/2026 15:17

Nowadays it makes no sense to have 16-24 as an economic cohort as the majority of 16-rising 19 year olds are not legally or practically capable of full time work.

SerendipityJane · 12/02/2026 15:21

I am sure there are guardrails that could be put in place to ensure that non uk resident money doesn't seep into UK politics. I was merely suggesting a staring point.

How about restricting donations to UK resident citizens only ? Corporate donations only accepted from companies that have completed a UK tax return and where all directors have submitted up to date tax details. That's my second iteration.

Or a cap on donations from non UK tax payers. There might well be people who earn too little to pay tax and are party members as Cardibach said. They are unlikely to have 10000 spare to give in donations.

Ex pats get to keep their colonisation. While they top up their tan.
