So, the media want a GE and a win for the bloke who is actually mentioned in the Epstein files and appointed someone convicted for Russia propoganda?

This is what baffles me and makes me so angry. The media would rather have an arsehole like Farage in charge, who himself is mentioned numerous times in the Epstein files, rather than Starmer. It just beggars belief. There are plenty of things that Starmer has got wrong but also loads he's got right which the media conveniently ignore. Putin must be laughing his little Russian socks off.

Having had a little look around the rest of MN there seems to be a lot of support for Starmer not going, even amongst people who say they don't like him/didn't vote Labour. People want some calm, not endless drama.

Also there has to be a point at which you simply can't leverage any more when it comes to the whole right wingosphere ? It's very easy to whip up the dim 20% that can be framed as 100%. However the next 5% will need that much more effort

and so on and so on.

Which explains why there is always a note of hysteria in the right wing press. They can only keep it up for so long.

Karistyleaftea · 09/02/2026 16:34

No drama Starmer.
Sorry President Obama, I know fine well it was yours first!

I didn't mean 'game' in the childish sense. I mean like 'playing the long game'. Surely , we want Scottish Labour to give the UK MPs?

I think I am seeing this through a different lens. Anyway, I like Sarwar.

Yes, I realised that but it’s seeing politics in that way which is putting us in a dangerous position. They need to just do what’s right not what’s most beneficial to themselves.
Edit to add: I’m not up on Scottish politics enough to comment on how it would affect election of Scottish MPs, but do the voting public in Scotland really want Starmer to go? And it’s a right wing talking point, so he seems more right wing for echoing it, not less. It just seems a very cynical and self serving move, especially given he doesn’t have a problem with Mandelson himself.

placemats · 09/02/2026 16:38

Within my Labour group WhatsApp, everyone wants Starmer to stay.

Edited

Sarwar is definitely not right wing!

I imagine KS is not popular in Scotland but have no polls.

Anyway, oddly, it seems to have worked for Starmer as it has 'woken up' his supporters!

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 09/02/2026 16:48

Not a Labour voter, but I am a Scottish voter, and IMO Starmer has shown such an egregious lack of judgement that he can't possibly remain as PM.

FWIW I have more respect for Starmer than any of the previous Tory incumbents who were all utterly repugnant for their own reasons, but the office of PM is ultimately the person making decisions for the running of the country, and once you've displayed such a lack of judgement you no longer have the credibility.

I don't think there is necessarily a better replacement waiting in the wings, but that fact alone shouldn't be used as an excuse to leave him in post. If you've proven your unsuitability, you remain unsuitable irrespective of the abilities of your prospective replacements.

I also think that it's even in debate shows how far standards in politics have fallen in the UK. 30-40 years ago this would have been the end of him without question.

I picked this up on SM. I can’t locate any sources I trust saying there was going to be an address. I’m suspicious of ‘cancelled’ when I can’t find ‘announced’. Did you find any?

Hi @cardibach

I saw it being reacted to on Reddit and RTd on usually reliable online users.

If Alistair Campbell really did counsel against mandelson it should be easy to check via their TRI Politics from late 2024

I stopped bothering with The Rest Is .. when Rory Stewart had a hissy fit about people complaining about women's rights under the Taliban BC actually the country was so much safer with them

I am amused that the (SCOTUK approved) Rest Is History team occasionally rib TRiP hosts for fiercely agreeing with each other ...

So glad the Winter Olympics are on, tis a great distraction.

No, I know he’s not. And you said he had to demonstrate it. Calling for Starmer to go seems to be the opposite of that.

From Darren Jones in HoC

Jones says government will legislate 'to ensure peerages can be removed from disgraced peers'

Jones says government wants to stop MPs having second jobs with 'very limited exemptions'

Put this on one of the Starmer threads. It really is outrageously biased from Mason (headline and first para - I couldn’t read further.

I can feel the heat from Mason's over excited thigh rubbing.

And team NL are finally going to get a speed skating medal.

Karistyleaftea · 09/02/2026 17:45

I have no time for Chris Mason these days.
In fact the BBC journos are always picking away at Labour. IMO.
They know fine well that people are busy and don't always read on further than the headline which is always skewed to the negative,
again, IMO.
The Cabinet has shown support and you would be hard pressed to know this if you just skim read the top of this article.
I'd mark it as a fail.
Go back and re write it young Mr Mason!
I thought the BBC were meant to be unbiased , is this why he is at pains to say it is a live, and legitimate, open question?

@BestIsWest here's some new stuff about 'Andrew'

Tick-tock, you horrible perve.

Or, to say it like it is:

His majesty has said he will support His Majesties police if they decide to investigate His Majesties brother ?

Doesn't sound quite so impressive when you boil it down.

And frankly, loathsome as AMW may be, Brexit and Farage have screwed over far more people, if we are directing resources.

BIossomtoes · 09/02/2026 18:04

Chris Mason is the worst political editor the Beeb have had in my lifetime. His bias is loud and proud. It made me laugh to see Fiona Bruce described as a champagne socialist - she’s as Tory as they come.

His poor washing machine. All that underwear.

Edit for spelling.

Piggywaspushed · 09/02/2026 18:07

Chris Mason is married to a teacher and his parents were teachers. He isn't part of that Westminster Bubble of journos. This makes me all the more disappointed in him, really.

At least with Nick we knew he was a Tory.
