A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

'Green Party, proven disaster!' Why would you say that about a party who have been stable and slowly gathering votes locally and nationally and doing lots of good work as councillors but have't been actually in Government.
Instead, you'd vote for Reform who have never been in government, don't have the faintest idea, have had to back down on various councils because their plans for cutting services and saving loads of money have been shown to be naive at best and Farage is the biggest corrupt, charlatan to appear in UK and world politics.
I can't imagine anything worse than a Reform UK government, it'll be like Brexit, 5 years down the track and everyone will be wishing they hadn't voted for them.

You’re wasting your breath. I wouldn’t vote Reform.

The Greens were thrown out in Brighton after completely fucking up the town.

And I’m sorry, but the Greens are all bonkers.

AnnasFangs · 27/01/2026 17:45

Goodwin is not a nice person. He said, for example, that Sunak and Badenoch could not be considered English. He graciously said they could be allowed to identify as British, but not English.

Wow. That’s quite the statement. I have the occasional thought that Reform are just on the wind up sometimes. Like they’d be completely horrified if they actually got into power.

You won't find any fans of the greens on this thread.

Yep, and there are also some trendy suburbs full of Zack Polanski types.

It will be an interesting by election re tactical voting. Its noteworthy that this is a very safe Labour seat, yet it looks like it will be a battle between Reform and the Greens. The Labour candidate feels inconsequential without Burnham.

They probably would have taken it with Burnham, the odds had him at over 50% but now dropped for Labour.

I’m not sure who’ll take it between Reform and Greens but I can think of at least 50 Labour MPs who will be unhappy if it’s Reform especially.

Not surprised that Labour's odds have fallen.
Is it 50 Labour MPs who have signed that letter? Blimey.

Goodwin was suggesting that English is a cultural and historical identity that means more than just birthplace.

I'm not sure I agree but if my parents emigrated to say, China, and that was where I was born, it would be technically accurate to say I was Chinese but I'm not sure if that would describe my identity very well. Idk. It's not something I've really thought about. But I don't think it's a horrible thought, even if I don't agree with the conclusion.

It is a point up for debate but he may have done better had he picked white examples. Perhaps he has also said that but I can’t find the context online quickly and I’ve looked as it makes such a difference.

On the face of it, those examples seem racist to me. And I don’t cry racism at everything. I just rolled my eyes when I read it. I wouldn’t vote for him anyway, mind, but it’s a moot point!

Yes, I mean, this is the kind of thing I mean when I said he seems to be becoming more abrasive. I don't think his concept is racist but, when he was asked as a kind of gotcha...so does that mean that you (your thoughts on English as an identity) mean you don't think Badenoch and Sunak aren't English...he could have wound back to his original point, have demonstrated the point by analogy, but for whatever reason he went with yes - because it was technically accurate. But of course, without context - immediately looks racist.

AnnasFangs · 27/01/2026 18:31

Michael Gove asked him "would you say that people like Rishi Sunak, Kemi Badenoch, Tony Sewell, Dame Kelly Holmes are not really English"?

Goodwin said "Englishness is an ethnicity deeply rooted in a people that can trace their roots back over generations. It is a very distinctive identity and a different identity from Britishness. Someone could identify as British, but not simultaneously as English."

Upstartled · 27/01/2026 18:35

If you believed identity is rooted in history, then that's is the technically correct answer. And it is kind of acknowledged in how you can apply for a visa to countries through a generational heritage. There's a understanding that there is still a belonging which is inherited and then fades.

So, DH could have come to this country if his grandfather had been born in England, but it was his great grandfather, and so couldn't apply for a visa through that route - before we got hitched instead.

Thank you! I read a painful article on his website and clutched my head!

NoWordForFluffy · 27/01/2026 17:43

But still...too old? How young do you like your gentlemen to be?

My ex is still in his 20s

I really wish I'd lied about my age while I had the chance. My best friend told me to do that. I thought she was mad! (and before anyone gets cross with me, it's quite common for people with my ethnicity to look a lot younger, add in jeans and hoodie that we all wear these days and you get away with it)

I don't really know how old I expect anyone to be. I don't really date.

But when your lovely ex is on the phone going "I still love you" you do have a moment! Or I do anyway.

Have to be earning twice as much to afford him though 😂

meanwhile, the Guardian are already running with that story on Matt Goodwin and I wonder if he's knocked himself out of the race on day one.

I hate those conversations about ethnicity, but I suppose I'm bound to get nervous, there are definite actual racist around while Labour call everybody racist. If you know what I mean.

I also think it's terrible that Reform want to remove people's indefinite leave to remain. It doesn't seem cricket to remove something that people have already been given.

Areas that have large scale multicultural identities and the problems they present are becoming more noticeable ...

redange · 27/01/2026 19:21

No because you are a 'British Citizen' if you emigrate to the United Kingdom. In the same way you cannot be Welsh/Scottish unless you have ancestry to it. As soon as someone mentions English identity though, immediately pull the race card when it has nothing to do with it. There, have been Black, Jewish and other culture identities living for generations in England, thus there are English due to their ancestry !

If you are referring to what Goodwin said, he was talking about people who were born in England.

EasternStandard · 27/01/2026 19:40

Listening to Andy Burnham saying it was simply untrue he was warned he would be blocked. I believe him. They treat people badly don’t they

MummySleepDeprived · 27/01/2026 19:43

I knew Matt Goodwin once back when he was early in his career and still normal. Feel a bit sick. He's handsome, youngish, educated and articulate and will play down the rhetoric and play up change until the election. He could be a good deputy for Farage if he progreses, which is scary. Really hope he doesn't get it and goes away.

Yep the NEC is independent there was no way to warn him. Anyone briefing otherwise is nasty and lying. Poor guy.

TheNuthatch · 27/01/2026 19:50

I heard that someone who works on Burnham's team has now proved beyond doubt that Pipa Crerer broke the news at least 15 minutes before Burham received a phone call and email. So bad.

ETA:- Broke the news that he had been blocked from standing. His x post about being informed after the media was true.

I don’t think he’s making stuff up. Just hearing him speak. Which means others are.

TheNuthatch · 27/01/2026 19:57

On Goodwin, (and as this is the anti Labour thread), I think its worth remembering why there is a by election in the first place.
Andrew Gwynne is a disgusting POS. Whoever the next MP is, they can't be much worse than him.
