A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

by the way I have seen the post about Mark Carney

I also thought he was attractive when he was governor of the bank of England

But even Matt is too old for me! Yes, my 20 something ex was also very cute in his suit 🥰😂 (just reminding you all you have Joan Collins in the chat 😂)

REALLY? I’m missing something!

Matt is too old for you?! He's 44. 🤔

Matt Goodwin has connections with both Manchester And Salford Universities. Matt Goodwin's first Degree in Politics is from Salford University and he was a research fellow at Manchester University for Political and Economic Governance from 2008-2010.
Mathew Goodwin is probably my favorite 'academic' in many ways a modern version of David Starkey with perhaps more analytical knowledge of modern political patterns.

Matt Goodwin also does not come across as an 'Academic', which will play well in the Denton part of the constituency. I would say is ability to not present academic superiority on people makes him the 'Favorite' to take the seat.

That photo must be a decade old - (oh, clicked on the link - and in was 2011)

redange · 27/01/2026 17:16

Matt Goodwin's ability not to 'lecture' the locals, makes him an academic who is very amiable to non academic people.

On the other hand any academic or political opponent, better know their stuff because Goodwin has a brilliant analytical mind about details, numbers and historical relevance. Another similar right wing academic is Dominic Sandbrook who has not chosen to enter the political sphere.

The bookies seem to have the Greens as favourites for the by-election.

I find that amazing. I can understand why people wouldn’t vote for Labour or Reform. So don’t bother voting. Why on earth give your vote to the weirdos in the Green Party? They’re a proven disaster. And completely nuts.

Hmmm. I think the assumption is the the Greens will be riding off their pro-Gaza ticket.

Oh, I thought he was 41

(sorry, it is on my mind because there's been another "but I really love you" phone call and this is the only place I can post where I won't get told off).

Moving on...

I actually don't know a lot about any Reform politicians - except maybe the ones who defected.

very strange days and still three years to go.

Wasn't there a poll saying that Starmer's constituency was likely to go Green? They are doing alarmingly well.

I just saw a tweet that said ‘Matt Goodwin is an Aldi version of Douglas Murray’ Made me laugh. I like Douglas Murray, he speaks a lot of sense about a lot of things.

Upstartled · 27/01/2026 17:33

I like Douglas Murray too but my God, he speaks soo slowly. I listened to one of his audiobooks on double speed so I didn't lose the will to live.

I think they do different things. People just like to rattle off that phrase to sound clever.

Yep, and there are also some trendy suburbs full of Zack Polanski types.

It will be an interesting by election re tactical voting. Its noteworthy that this is a very safe Labour seat, yet it looks like it will be a battle between Reform and the Greens. The Labour candidate feels inconsequential without Burnham.

'Green Party, proven disaster!' Why would you say that about a party who have been stable and slowly gathering votes locally and nationally and doing lots of good work as councillors but have't been actually in Government.
Instead, you'd vote for Reform who have never been in government, don't have the faintest idea, have had to back down on various councils because their plans for cutting services and saving loads of money have been shown to be naive at best and Farage is the biggest corrupt, charlatan to appear in UK and world politics.
I can't imagine anything worse than a Reform UK government, it'll be like Brexit, 5 years down the track and everyone will be wishing they hadn't voted for them.

Oh is it a common phrase?! I’d never heard it before. But then I’d never heard of Matt Goodwin til yesterday / today..

Uhm did you see what the Greens did to Brighton? Absolute disaster. And they had a willing crowd. Bloody awful. If they vote the greens in good luck to them because within 5yrs (or how ever long they’d be in for) it’ll be a shit hole.

Upstartled · 27/01/2026 17:42

I wouldn't touch the Greens with a barge pole. I'd vote Labour before I voted for the Greens.

Goodwin is not a nice person. He said, for example, that Sunak and Badenoch could not be considered English. He graciously said they could be allowed to identify as British, but not English.

Thank you. I hadn’t factored that in.

On the assumption that Gaza does bring success for the Greens in Gorton, Labour will panic even more. They have numerous constituencies vulnerable to the Islamic vote. Including Streeting’s wafer thin majority.

So it would seem quite possible that Starmer will be moved against next month if a Green win can be shown to be a Gaza effect.
