A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Thank you, @TheNuthatch. This thread could be a rollercoaster. Bring it on!

SeekingAlpha · 26/01/2026 18:39

Keir Starmer was able to block Burnham from standing yesterday not because the 10-strong NEC Officers’ group is a hotbed of pro-Starmer sentiment — that would be enough for a narrow majority — but because if you are a supporter of one of the other potential replacements, it is also in your interest to keep Burnham off.

Logical.

Ps. An old NC has suddenly decided to kick in….

Is that your opinion or a quote from somewhere? Interesting take, either way.

Hello everyone

I said on the last thread that I wished the Conservatives would keep quiet about defections. A dignified silence is fine.

I'm thinking that even more today!

SeekingAlpha · 26/01/2026 19:13

The OP has created a chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙🩵

Thanks

InterestQ · 26/01/2026 19:21

Agreed Emerald - the* *accidental (I hope so - not authorised then regretted) statement on Braverman’s defection was juvenile.

EmeraldRoulette · 26/01/2026 19:28

@InterestQ I also really disliked Kemi saying of Jenrick "he's someone else's problem now". I think I mentioned this on the thread

I just think a dignified silence would be better. Also, it sounds as if they may have crossed a line in what they said about SB, but I'm not 100% clear what happened there

That just gives Reform so much ammunition, or should I say even more ammunition? And it's not good to be in a position witn both the party in charge and the opposition looking pathetic.

What's wrong with saying nothing at all? I understand you have to answer questions if you're asked but otherwise you could keep quiet.

I hear Lord Frost is the next defection.

Yes -very interesting!

InterestQ · 26/01/2026 19:34

@EmeraldRoulette agreed on Jenrick. No one wants to keep defectors, obviously. The equivalent of “the trash is taking itself out” can remain unsaid.

This snippet is from the Speccie’s email this afternoon.

“…one former Tory adviser told me this afternoon: ‘This is one that both parties are probably quite pleased about’. Which turned out to be prescient when the Conservative press office put out an astonishing statement to journalists which read: ‘The Conservatives did all we could to look after Suella’s mental health, but she was clearly very unhappy.’

A few hours later the statement – which was needlessly cruel and crass – was withdrawn and the press office claimed it had been ‘a draft’ that was ‘sent out in error’. I’ll leave it up to you to judge the truthfulness of that excuse.”

Januaryescape · 26/01/2026 19:55

It does make sense - the only person with more to lose from Burnham being allowed to stand than KS and RR is Wes. He’s definitely heir apparent.

EmeraldRoulette · 26/01/2026 20:35

@InterestQ thank you

I saw a snippet of it circulating on X and did not have a chance to check the source.

They actually sent that to journalists? That is truly appalling.

isn't she one of those MPs who is well spoken of by her constituents? I always think that's a big deal, but of course I have no idea how they feel about her defecting.

I mean a big deal as in, I think it tells you more about the MP than what happens in Westminster.

If there isn't any element of truth in that statement, Braverman will have to sue them for libel.

If she doesn't, the facts are out there in perpetuity no matter how quickly the statement was withdrawn and an apology issued. (Apologies for stating the bleedin' obvious.)

Edit: typo

InterestQ · 26/01/2026 21:08

I don’t know how her constituents view her - she’s quite marmite I suppose.

That statement sent to journalists; if it were Boris in charge, I would assume it was some hero-worshipping chump junior who dashed it together out of furious loyalty and sent it round internally and somehow it got out. But I can’t see Kemi having any truck with that sort of mooncalf so I don’t know.

She’s quite waspish so I hope it wasn’t her own ill thought out tantrum that her inexperienced team thought “well why not just say it then?” before realising how it landed and retracting.

Either way - I’m knackered by the political news bollocks at the moment. Can’t they just get on with their work? There’s a lot to do people!

TheNuthatch · 26/01/2026 21:08

@Upstartled Thanks for the list. Would love to keep that going. If you can't be bothered, let me know and I'll put it in the OP next thread.

Agree that the original statement about Braverman was crass. Not sure why anyone decided that was a good idea.
I think Kemi was spot on in her handling of Jenrick though.

Just catching up with today's psychodrama of a government. Wes Streeting looked very chipper next to Starmer in the pharmacy this morning. 😂
Lots of blinking from the very pale, porcine eyed Starmer when asked about Burnham etc.

Reading some China news, Xi has just dramatically sacked his military No.2, just in time for Starmer to arrive. 😬

I get the feeling we don’t know how friendly to be with China and how much money we need there. I also saw that Canada isn’t doing their trade deal with them, but briefly and haven’t looked into it much, but if so we’re more on a limb if we get a deal.

Oh thats news about Canada. I found it really strange that Carney gave that speech at Davos whilst simultaneously rubbing shoulders with China. Quite a juxtaposition.
I just read that Xi has had quite the purge of his military leaders recently. Could spell trouble for Taiwan.
I think Reeves is joining Starmer in China too. We can rest easy with those two at the helm. 😬

@EasternStandard Canada have pulled out of the deal?

I wonder if it was some sort of anticipatory thing to do with Trump and Greenland.
