A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

100% tariffs concentrates the mind

Pacificsunshine · 26/01/2026 22:39

It makes no sense to do a trade deal with China. It’s China’s stated intention to buy as little from abroad as possible. With this perspective, what point is there in doing a trade deal? It’s a one way street.

I just picked it up briefly on the radio but looking it up there’s a fair few articles

https://thehill.com/business/5706229-donald-trump-tariffs-threat-canada-china/amp/

There’s a thread on MN somewhere atm, talking about how gorgeous mark carney is.
I can’t see it

I wasn’t aware of that but yes you’re so right. It’s just flood the market with cheaper Chinese goods and if they don’t buy back it’s no good.

He has a vague resemblance to the Bush family if you ask me (so no, I can't see it either!).

Oh yes so he does 😂

This morning is horrible horrible weather! I had to put a hat and dry robe (yup dry robe wanker!) on to put the bins out and came in soaked through ☔️ yuk. Even the dogs are refusing to go outside.

Respectfully, this is not correct.

I am no fan of Beijing, but what Starmer is seeking is investment. China is long cash, and is keen to ‘park’ that money around the world (it also gives them political leverage, of course). In return, Starmer gets job creation etc.

One can always argue whether we should/should not accept Chinese money, of course.

Upstartled · 27/01/2026 15:29

The Spectator is reporting that Matt Goodwin is standing for Reform in the Denton & Gorton by-election. I think that might nail it for them, tbh.

The weather is absolutely dreadful here too @peacefulpeach. January has no redeeming features at all.

I hope so, but I would want to read the details.

Matt Goodwin is great, but I think they are not confident about winning it they v world have put Zia Yusuf up…

AnnasFangs · 27/01/2026 15:54

Does Yusuf actually want to be an MP? He's not great at communicating with the public.

TheNuthatch · 27/01/2026 15:56

Matt Goodwin is an excellent choice for the by election. @EmeraldRoulette will be pleased. 😍

@peacefulpeach Yes awful weather here too. More trees blown over. Unfortunately my dogs couldn't care less about bad weather so we're out in all weathers. Please tell me you have the same dry robe as Rayner? Camouflage print with bright pink lining. 😂👌

I just came here to say about Matt Goodwin

I wouldn't vote Reform though even if the candidate is cute and blue eyed!

I don't think Zia would want to be an MP. To be honest, I think his manner is so abrasive, he would actually be better in role that's not public facing.

I don't know much about him, but whenever I see him on the television, he comes across quite badly.

Those are my thoughts on Yusuf too.

TheNuthatch · 27/01/2026 16:25

The Greens are deciding on their candidate on Friday. Should be interesting. I think Goodwin will prove popular in Denton. The Greens will want to focus on the Gorton side, but they will have competition from pro pal independents.

This week's YouGov

Reform - 25 (+1)
Labour - 21 (+2)
Cons - 17 (-1)
Green - 16 (-1)
Lib Dem - 14 (-)

OP posts:
Upstartled · 27/01/2026 16:35

Yeah, I'm not sure Zia has any appetite to be an MP.

I think Goodwin is interesting because he seems to have an an old school approach to class analysis - whether that lands on the effect of uncontrolled migration or the cascade of unintentional effects of funneling too many kids through the university system.

He's upped his profile over the last year and that will work in his favour and I do think this will be a win for Reform- but, personally, I think he has become abrasive in that time and will need to broaden his talking points and smile occasionally if he is to be an MP.

EasternStandard · 27/01/2026 16:38

It’ll be interesting if Reform do manage it just for the internal Labour wrangling.

EmeraldRoulette · 27/01/2026 16:45

Does Matt Goodwin have sufficient connections with Manchester?

I don't know that Reform have any candidates who do so maybe it's just a case of putting up a press ready candidate.

It would be important to me but of course everyone is different. The local candidates here are a bit of a new guard, because the old guard retired, and some of them didn't grow up in my area or indeed seem to know anything about it. Obviously, I left for the better part of 30 years so perhaps I shouldn't be so specific about that - I'm not standing though LOL. To be fair, one of the newbies lives in mum's road. He's throwing himself into volunteering and everything.

I used to see Matt Goodwin as a pointless fluffy academic and when I started hearing his name more recently, I literally assumed it was a different person. I was very surprised when it wasn't! I probably posted that before.

I can't believe we have to factor in candidates looking at foreign issues. Ugh. I really hope we don't end up with any of that round my way. It seems unlikely but given that the entire world has gone mad.... some days I genuinely think they put something in the water.

i've mostly seen him being quite smiley and non-abrasive, but I haven't seen him on mainstream TV, only on podcasts where the vibe is usually friendlier.

LupaMoonhowl · 27/01/2026 16:47

I think the V leak of local connection could be an issue -depends who the others put up. AB will be secretly hoping he wins as a gotcha over aStarmer.

EmeraldRoulette · 27/01/2026 16:53

@LupaMoonhowl is "v leak" a clever way of saying "weak link" ?

EmeraldRoulette · 27/01/2026 16:56

by the way I have seen the post about Mark Carney

I also thought he was attractive when he was governor of the bank of England

But even Matt is too old for me! Yes, my 20 something ex was also very cute in his suit 🥰😂 (just reminding you all you have Joan Collins in the chat 😂)

TheNuthatch · 27/01/2026 16:57

Goodwin went to uni in Salford and his Grandparents are/were Mancunian.
