A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

A Labour MP who decried the lack of affordable homes in her constituency is living in a council flat, The Telegraph can reveal.

Apsana Begum, who earns a salary of £94,000 as the MP for Poplar and Limehouse, in east London, has spoken out about the “housing crisis across London” and rising rates of homelessness.

But The Telegraph can reveal that she continues to live in a council flat, despite admitting almost five years ago that she “probably” did not need it any more.

Tower Hamlets, the gift that keeps on giving.

What about the councillor collecting her salary who's living abroad 😯

Angela Rayner has secured a 'war chest' of more than £1million to fund her bid to succeed Sir Keir Starmer, her allies have claimed.

Amid growing expectations that Sir Keir will soon face a challenge to his leadership, the former deputy prime minister has moved her stealth operation up a gear, with sources also saying she has started to promise Cabinet jobs to her supporters.

It comes as Ms Rayner has set up a new company called The Office of Angela Rayner Ltd to conduct her business.

An ally said Ms Rayner had been cultivating donors as part of a 'personal charm offensive' since she was forced to resign from the Cabinet five months ago over her underpayment of stamp duty.

The ally said: 'She has received more than a million in firm pledges and is ready to go.'

Ms Rayner's supporters have also claimed that HMRC is dragging out its investigation into her tax affairs at the behest of the 'deep state' - a shadowy Establishment network trying to stop her from becoming Prime Minister

I rarely post, but gloomy news on a niche subject compared to the wider shitshow which it doesn't seem to be reported anywhere. It appears the Research Councils (which fund UK scientific research) have all frozen or cut grant funding. Some RCs have announced they're just not accepting applications. Some areas have had funding shrunk by 30%.

It's a very bad time for UK science, and while you could say it's not something the average person cares about, the UK was always known for punching above its weight in international scientific impact. Researchers have really struggled to get research funding in the past couple of years, so the decline isn't originally under this government, but the recent funding cuts/freezes are. So they're making a bad situation much worse with an increasing backlog in people desperately applying for grants.

I have been following this thread avidly, a
small post here and there. But this is my bug bear! Angela Rayner for PM. Never, ever should this be allowed to happen. And I do still have a
smidgen of faith in the foundations of our institutions that would prevent this from happening. Let your last paragraph be the case. And it is in the shadowy levels of the deep state that power lies.

The idea terrifies me, but rationality kicks in and I know it will not happen.

Look on the bright side, my friend.

A Rayner government will simply accelerate the demise of a Labour government, as opposed to the current death by a thousand cuts.

LOL! Your post cheered me up! It is though, isn’t it “death by a thousand cuts “!

What does it say about the current state in the United Kingdom that Angela Raynor is on course to become Prime Minister.

We joke about her being Lauren Tate, but this is not funny when the reality is she is likely to be the next Prime Minister of the 'United Kingdom' for gods sake.
Raynor is not talented educated or displays any particular great set of skills to bring to the role of Prime Minister. She is likely to be the only Prime Minister ever in UK history never to have got to a 'Directorial' level job. This being either in the Public or Private sector. This is quite astonishing it means we will have a Prime Minister that has never been a director in Human Resources, built a Private/Public Company practiced law or even held office within a Council Chamber ...

Completely agree.

The equivalent of DEI hire, and after her recent bout of tax evasion, I find it utterly mind-blowing that she is even considered to be in the running as Starmer’s potential replacement.

Not interrupting your enemy whilst they are making (another) mistake, springs to mind, though.

Burnham would meanwhile cause a full-blown gilt crisis - an order of magnitude beyond Truss’s.

Yes on some of these things just get the popcorn and wait. That never interrupt line is very apt.

DH being very old fashioned was ranting this morning about some trollop in her twenties saying she'd allegedly bonked a royal a generation ago. His opinion of Raynor is no higher.

I'm glad he's got a well man clinic this month. His blood pressure should be checked.

Perhaps see if he can also have a small op to remove his misogyny, if he refers to women as "trollops"!😄

The ongoing Epstein/Mandelson saga is not a good look for Starmer - just goes to prove his lack of judgement.

Another nail in the coffin for our hapless PM.

Mandelson, meanwhile - what a shameless grifter - he couldn’t even lie straight in bed, that one. He can join AM-W and Ferguson, to live out the remainder of their lives in obscurity.

Absolutely.
Its shocking that Mandelson has been allowed to limp on for five months. He should never have been appointed ambassador when his Epstein links were known. Starmer clearly didn't want to get rid of him even when the shit hit the fan back in September.
Starmer made a statement yesterday saying that Andrew should appear before Congress, yet not a word about Mandelson, who was all over our screens in his underpants. Makes me so feckin angry for the victims.

And if the human trafficking wasn't enough..

Mandelson is questioning the authenticity of documents showing that he and his husband received £75K from Epstein whilst Mandelson was serving as business secretary.

Sir Keir Starmer’s plan for a nuclear renaissance faces a rearguard action from Labour MPs and wildlife charities over claims it will be a “catastrophe” for nature.

As many as 40 backbenchers are rallying against the Prime Minister’s proposal to overhaul environmental regulations after an independent review said red tape was frustrating the construction of new power stations.

The MPs and a coalition of environmental charities including the Wildlife Trusts, the RSPB, the National Trust and the Woodland Trust have accused ministers of scapegoating protected species such as bats and newts for planning failures.

I stand/hang with the bats - anything to shaft Starmer….
