A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Agree @Fauchon when you’ve got graduates repaying loans on a shade more than the minimum wage the system is a joke. Good on Martin Lewis - another expert who has had enough of them.

He’s also been at fault too. Encouraging YP to get loans and loans ‘because you’ll never have to pay it back in full’. So wrong.

Another corrupt useless taxpayer wasted funded honourable member of the Labour community.

Jeez. You couldn't make it up could you 🙈. Especially the bit about her complaining about potholes and wasting taxpayer cash in Bangladesh!

Labour have selected a candidate for the by election. I almost feel sorry for her.

I think Labour are a bit offended by the suggestion that this will be a fight between Reform and the Greens. 😂

Yep I’m glad he’s speaking up. He sounded quite emotional in the clip I heard. Good on him. Hope he gets somewhere against Reeves and co.

Januaryescape · 31/01/2026 16:33

The hypocrisy has gotten to Martin Lewis I think, the govt changing loan rules they would stop commercial banks doing.

Yes this is also detailed in the article I just linked.
At their event today, Lucy Powell was kean to link Burnham to the by election by listing the benefits he brought to the constituency as mayor of GM. She has obviously decided that they need Burnham on side if they have any hope of winning.
At the same time, Starmer's flunkies are bad-mouthing Burnham (anonymously) with zero clue as to how that impacts Labour's chances of winning. 😂🍿

It’s going to be an interesting result.

With 47% economically inactive / unemployed.. they’ll have much to gain from Labour.

With 49% non English / Scottish / Welsh / NI or British ethnicity (their wording) - they’ll have more affinity with Labour

However there’s still 50% working Uk ethnicity so… it’ll be close.

Then we have the greens who they’ll appeal to I really couldn’t call

Nice, thanks.

Sounds like it’s Labours to lose - if so, hopefully the consequences will prove existential for Rodders….

I think the Greens are hoping to hoover up the 49%, Reform hoping to pick up the rest.
Treating Burnham as they have won't do Labour any favours locally.

Oo that’s interesting. And you’re localish right? So the Labour folk wanted Burnham, starmer put his little foot down, and now they hate Labour so will vote Green or reform? Ooo exciting (well it’s all relative).. look forward to watching from my southern Tory (was northern Labour) sidelines ;)

Series of explosions across Iran. Not making much sense. They're saying gas explosions. One is at the port where the IRGG naval area is. DH wondered if it was the drone base?

True but I think the point Labour generally miss is that they are lavishing benefits on those far less likely to vote in the first place. Less than 50% turnout there at the GE, by-election likely less again. Those policies are I think more aimed at helping the, if not quite champagne, then the Pinot Grigio socialists feel good about themselves. Because goodness knows they don’t feel good about anyone who dares generate wealth and create tax paying employment opportunities.

Oh yeah good point. So looks like reforms for the taking then.. esp looking almost next door to lancs, similar demographics..

Apparently the greens have no credible threat there (well this article says that.. 🤷‍♀️)

Saw them interview locals in Denton after the Burnham cancellation. People on the street interviewed were very annoyed that his selection had been blocked.

Sky have this, but there isn't much detail. The explosions don't look like military strikes.
False flag maybe?

Two explosions reported in Iran - as Israel denies involvement

At least five people are understood to have been killed in two separate blasts across the country.

This was shared by Upstartled earlier in the thread, but looks like the Greens will run on a pro Gaza ticket which will remove the threat from independents. Very relevant to your pp about demographics in the constituency.

Oh dear. What a joke. So they’re going to nominate a candidate tbd, who no one’s ever heard of before but who will be there only to scoop up a Muslim vote because ZP has declared that the greens support Palestine. Call me cynical but. . Imagine being manipulated like that as the electorate. What could go wrong.

I thought the Greens had announced their candidate? I think I read that she is a plumber who is also training to be a plasterer?

I have been reading things with severe brain fog and a temperature of 39, so it could have been a fever dream. Its hard to tell with the Green party.🤣

😂 Ah you’re right. As of yesterday they have a candidate. She’s going to reimagine the police. Excellent.

‘Hannah Spencer is the Green Party candidate for the Gorton and Denton by-election in Greater Manchester, UK. She was officially selected on January 30, 2026, after a democratic vote by local party members. Spencer, a 34-year-old plumber and trainee plasterer, has served as a Green Party councillor for the Hale Ward in Trafford since May 2023 and previously ran as the Green candidate for Greater Manchester mayor in 2024.

She is positioning the by-election as a decisive contest between the Green Party and Reform UK, framing it as a choice between "Hope v hate" and "Green v Reform." Spencer has pledged to fight against child poverty, insecure housing, and Britain’s support for Israel’s actions in Gaza. She also supports decriminalising prostitution and has expressed openness to reimagining policing.

Her candidacy has drawn attention for its working-class credentials, with Green Party leader Zack Polanski calling her "Reform’s worst nightmare" and highlighting her grassroots roots. ‘

Hope you feel better soon!
