I still find this funny.

Ahh relief - was just coming to ask if your wonderful roller blind was available

Notonthestairs · 04/02/2026 18:23

Is that right. Well, maybe she'll get a chance. Who knows.

Efacsen · 04/02/2026 18:24

Headline in Evening Standard

Rayner Leads Labour Revolt

As predicted

Nobbystyles · 04/02/2026 18:29

Rayner chose the high ground, and for that, she is to be applauded.

Meanwhile, you know that Starmer is in serious trouble when even the Guardian is going for him.

Hard to see him surviving this. Perhaps he will throw McSweeney to the lions in a vain attempt to cling on - SOP for Starmer.

Tin Foil Sparkle GIF by WENS

I have had a bit of a tin foil hat moment.

Given that there are suggestions that Epstein was a Russian spy.
Given what we know about Reform i.r.o of Russian patronage.
Given that Farage keeps predicting an early GE.

Did Farage have an inkling this was all going to come out?

Rather akin to Starmer’s due diligence on Mandy….

Starmer’s ‘humourous’ speech after the appointment of Mandelson as US ambassador.

”You can sense that there's a new leader in town that is a true one-off, a pioneer in business and in politics. Many people love him. Others love to hate him. But to us, he's just... Peter."
"Peter is the right person to help us work with President Trump, and to take the special relationship from strength to strength."

Not aged well, has it…

PandoraSocks · 04/02/2026 18:54

It is a good thing the real Nobby Styles had a decent sense of direction, which his MN namesake seems to lack.

placemats · 04/02/2026 18:55

He was an excellent footballer x

Nobbystyles · 04/02/2026 19:03

LOL don’t be like that - this is a Starmer thread, and if ever there were a moment to discuss our PM, it’s right here, right now...

MaybeNotBob · 04/02/2026 19:05

Everyone going after Starmer, driven by the usual right wing suspects. I tend to feel more like this;

Social media tells the public, Starmer (who had zero to do with it) should now go over the Epstein revelations.
Yet Trump stays President & Andrew continues to live like a Prince.
Starmer made a bad choice, that's it.
Prosecute the guilty for the victims.
Don't make political gain out of this.

If Starmer appointed Mandleson without knowing the contents of those emails (or similar information collated by HOLAC) I'm not sure what he's done wrong.

If he appointed Mandleson and did know the contents of the emails (or could have reasonably been expected to know based on the information provided to him) then I'd imagine he'll have to go.

Knowing that Mandleson was a money and power obsessed shit isn't really sufficient in itself.

As with most things we'll have to wait for the information.
Waiting is much less exciting than deciding in advance I grant you.

pointythings · 04/02/2026 19:08

I must say I do like the idea of Rayner as PM. Not only would the usual suspects no longer be able to whinge about Labour never having had a female PM, they would also spontaneously combust.

I am also 100% in agreement with you for Rayner to replace Starmer as PM.

Today in the House our PM said Mandelson had lied repeatedly and that he had betrayed our country
Strong words of condemnation, no?

All the more odd that Starmer attempted to limit the scope of disclosure, until compelled to accept an amendment by the opposition, Rayner and the back benches.

Why would Starmer attempt such a thing?

DuncinToffee · 04/02/2026 19:38

The footballer is Nobby Stiles

Olympic curling has started, GB v Norway mixed doubles.

Such a lovely column and I follow this every day.

Thanks Placemats, I will have a read. I am currently collecting loo roll innards for sweetpeas. When is the best time to sow them if starting them off indoors? Any particular varieties you'd recommend?

Karistyleaftea · 04/02/2026 19:41

I love the winter Olympics @DuncinToffee looking forward to friday.
I love the moguls , ski jump and the skating.

The moguls are so funny to watch but I wouldn't want to do them myself, I like my innards staying in place. Not that I know how to ski Grin

Ski jump is amazing and speed skating is my favourite winter olympics sport.
