@Alexandra2001 Mandelson is despicable, yes. I don’t think I would have appointed him if had been my decision, but like @Karistyleaftea i can just about see why it might have happened. Nobody knew about the secrets then. I’d be hugely surprised if Johnson was t discussing stuff he shouldn’t have been in an oligarch’s mansion, especially with the ennobling of Lebedev.

There were lots of things I called for resignation of Tories about, but I don’t think I’d have done it for this. I don’t know. We’ll have to see I guess.

SerendipityJane · 04/02/2026 14:41

Nobody knew about the secrets then.

I bet they did. This whole newsfest is clearly being driven from the point of view of "Shit !!! We've been rumbled" rather than "It's beyond belief this was ever allowed to happen"

Let's put it this way. If wealth and privilege were ingredients in a processed meal, they'd be banned by now.

PandoraSocks · 04/02/2026 14:43

But it was known that Mandelson had remained friends with Epstein after his first conviction. I don't know if this is true, but it is said that McSweeney persuaded Starmer to appoint Mandelson.

I disagree. He knew he was a friend of Epstein and had remained one post conviction. That’s bad. But I d9nt see any reason why he (or anyone in this government) would know he’d been sharing secrets with him. That’s not something you tell people, is it? Not if you want to be able to carry on doing it.

Is it? News to me.

For the purposes of doubt, I've never liked McSweeney. However he managed to engineer a clean sweep with the broom. Trouble is he swept it under the carpet.

placemats · 04/02/2026 14:55

The big mistake, and possibly fatal one, is that Starmer gave parliament his full support for McSweeney today at PMQs.

I saw that somewhere too, apparently Starmer wanted George Osborn?

I can't remember why a new ambassador was appointed.

Actually you are right, I think. I completely misread something I saw online. There is so much info flying around.

DuncinToffee · 04/02/2026 15:27

Angela Rayner for PM then?

That was in reply to your original post Pandora Smile

Edited

I can imagine how well that would go down!

DuncinToffee · 04/02/2026 15:54

Well she is the force behind amending the amendment from earlier today;

“any papers which are prejudicial to UK national security or international relations will be referred to the Intelligence and Security Committee"

That was spectacularly stupid. What was he thinking?

He really seems to be following the "good chap" way of doing business - very much a Macmillanite then ...

So I see.

Rayner wasn't the only Labour MP to voice concern about this.

What is striking was Simon Hoare's statement that referenced his stance regarding the suspension of Owen Paterson. It reflected the cross party unity regarding Mandelson during this crucial debate.

Bigly wave to Trump supporters watching this thread. Epstein isn't going away.

Not if the UK re negotiate the Customs Union. Which is on the cards - it's all on Google.

Customs union is the harder part.

Also how can you fudge the ECJ involvement ?

placemats · 04/02/2026 17:10

The harder part doesn't exist and never has.

Nobbystyles · 04/02/2026 17:58

It’s been a rough old day, team.

Remember, Starmer brought this upon himself.

PandoraSocks · 04/02/2026 18:02
Go Away Goodbye GIF

I still find this funny.

Nobbystyles · 04/02/2026 18:03

Rather akin to Starmer’s due diligence on Mandy….

Notonthestairs · 04/02/2026 18:16

Come on then Newbie Nobby (new to MN? Or just too 🐓 to use your usual name?) - spill who you want as PM.
