How many funerals have you attended?

I've just attended my second one and I'm 49.
How many have you attended and how old are you?

9 before I turned 50.

There was an alarming run as I turned 40 - alarming due to both the number of deaths and the age. Having reached 39 having only attended the funeral of my grandfather and a much older colleague, 4 of my university friends did not live to see 40. My mother in law and sister in law died the year before that (so 2/3 of the funerals occurred within a 2 year period)

My daughter was a babe in arms for those funerals and it took her until she was 8 before the number of weddings she had attended caught up with the number of funerals.

Turnerskies · 22/01/2026 22:13

I'm surprised how few many people on here have been to. I am 70 and have been to 25 funerals, despite the fact that most older blood relatives lived too far away for me to attend theirs.

TirednessOnToast · 22/01/2026 22:14

58: 6.

GKG1 · 22/01/2026 22:14

20-30, I’m 44 and Scottish. It was on MN that I learned it wasn’t typical in England to go to the funerals of people you didn’t know well, to support the family. I’ve been to quite a few of people I’ve never met. Plus a number of close family and friends.

lydialucy · 22/01/2026 22:15

10 I think. I am mid 50’s.

ShowmetheMapletree · 22/01/2026 22:16

7 funerals; I'm 39. It would be 8, but I didn't go to one.

Edited

Actually, the number of funerals has overtaken weddings for her again as my darling grandmother died last year.

LLJETO · 22/01/2026 22:18

11 and I’m (very nearly) 50.

Edited - actually, 12

OnlyFrench · 22/01/2026 22:20

63
DF
DH
3 friends
2 ILs
3 GPs
2 aunts/uncles
1 teacher

I have an enormous family and have been lucky that I’ve had to miss quite a few through work commitments

I'm Irish and wouldn't think I was a great funeral-goer, but still at least a dozen a year, maybe more - that is including the funeral home visit and commiserations as 'a funeral'.

Me too. I couldn't begin to estimate how many funerals I've been at.

I was at 2 in the past 3 weeks alone - sister of a woman I'm friends with and daughter of a woman I'm friends with.

Handrearedmagpie · 22/01/2026 22:20

I'm 50 and have been to 16 amily member and 7 other funerals.

SockQueen · 22/01/2026 22:20

I'm 41, I think maybe 8-10?
2 grandparents (the other two died before I was born)
2 of DH's grandparents
2 great aunts
2 teachers
A couple when I was in the school choir and we were asked to go and sing.
My friend's dad, aged 16 - that was my first and I surprised myself by how upsetting I found it.

pointythings · 22/01/2026 22:22

I'm 58, I have attended six. But my first was at 22.

magpie234 · 22/01/2026 22:22

6 and I am 36. 3x grandparents (4th I was too young to attend). My dad who was only 61. My grandma-in-law - 97! The dad of a close friend - again sadly taken before his time from cancer.

I am sorry for your most recent loss and hope their send-off was as good as it could be.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 22/01/2026 22:23

I'm nearly 60 and I think I've been to about 2 5.

TheTecknician · 22/01/2026 22:25

Seven. I'm fifty-five.

herbalteabag · 22/01/2026 22:27

13 that I can think of. I'm 53. The majority were when I was between 30-40.

Runnersandtoms · 22/01/2026 22:27

3 grandparents (1 died when I was in primary school, I don't think I went), one great uncle, one friend, my mother in law. Also went to the celebration life of our neighbour. I'm 47.

Yes, exactly. I’ve been to two so far in 2026. In the course of my life, absolutely no idea. Countless. I’m 53.

IfyouStealMySunshine · 22/01/2026 22:29

I’m 42 and 11 I think.
Am also surprised at some of the low numbers most of mine are elderly relatives and supporting friends and their parents funerals.
About half of those due to having young children or being at work at the time I’ve just gone to the service.

TwoBlueFish · 22/01/2026 22:32

5 and I’m mid 50’s (partners grandparent, my grandparents, MIL and step parent). First 2 before I was 20, then none until mid 40’s.

Norugratsatall · 22/01/2026 22:34

61 and at least 15.

sallydoodlecat · 22/01/2026 22:39

I'm 54 and I think it's 14. And got another to go to soon.

Neighbours87 · 22/01/2026 22:41

I’m 38 been to probably dozens. I’m Irish it’s the done thing

Kickinthenostalgia · 22/01/2026 22:43

6 and I’m 37
my Nan and grandad
DP mum and dad
DP Nan and grandad

tbh i know everyone hates funerals but for me it’s worse, I’m not a crier, haven’t cried probably since I was about 15, so I always look like a heartless bitch sat there whilst everyone else is crying 😭 it’s a bit uncomfortable and awkward 😬
