How many funerals have you attended?

I've just attended my second one and I'm 49.
How many have you attended and how old are you?

And in rural areas, there's no prolonging to the wake because many of the mourners need to get home while the light is okay to drive.

SpongyNight · 22/01/2026 21:24

I’m 52 and I’ve been to 11. It should be more really but being too young (a parent), my job, distance and Covid stopped me going to funerals I would’ve definitely gone to otherwise.

Berlinlover · 22/01/2026 21:24

I’m Irish and can honestly say I’d probably lost count by the age of 10 but that’s normal here.

CharlotteFlax · 22/01/2026 21:25

Shitloads! Went to my first one aged 4. Three in the summer of 2021...
Im not Irish/catholic or very old, either!

I'm so surprised how few funerals some people my age (and older) on this thread have been to.

Maybe it's cultural? Rural/urban?

I've been to the funerals of former colleagues, parents/grandparents of friends, former teachers, neighbours and unfortunately school friends, and well as close and not so close family.

For those of you who have attended very few funerals, would you not attend the above examples?

Moved around a lot so not in touch with many school friends, former colleagues or old neighbours.

Also have a relatively small family - DH’s family is larger (Irish) but scattered to the winds.

And also subscribe to the idea of travelling to see people when they’re alive rather than when they’re dead.

I'm 70 and have been to 13.

Only two could be described a having had a decent innings. Most cut down in early to mid-middle age. One suicide.

Too many. All 4 grandparents and lost both my parents. Plus some wider family too.

BeenChangedForGood · 22/01/2026 21:33

I’ve never really thought about the fact some people haven’t experienced funerals much until recently when my 48yo colleague told me she’d never attended one!

I’m 35 and have attended at least 20:
4 Grandparents
1 Sibling
1 DHs Grandparent
2 friends
1 friends dad
3 close family friends
1 friends DH
1 next door neighbour
various family friends/neighbours that I grew up around

horseplay12 · 22/01/2026 21:38

I’m 45, I have lost count, but certainly all 4 grandparents, step dad, step dads Dad, 3 aunts/uncles, cousin, daughter, 6 friends at school (at least), godparents. ex fil, ex aunt in law x 2.
great gran, DSis MIL, great uncle, best friends parents (both, separately)
And then members of the local community and neighbours as well.

Eifla2o18 · 22/01/2026 21:40

Gosh. My number seems high for 46. I didn't realise. 16 straight off the top of my head.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 22/01/2026 21:40

A quick count puts it at 17 and no doubt I haven’t remembered them all. I’m 52.

A bus to go to funerals?

PandorasSockBox · 22/01/2026 21:42

16 funerals, I am 67.

SharonEllis · 22/01/2026 21:44

55 - 10, I think?

Superstar22 · 22/01/2026 21:57

I’m 40 & have been to 12-15 half 75+ & half early 60s 😢

Bombinia · 22/01/2026 21:58

I'm early 50s, at least 8 I'm actually not entirely sure!

Magnalux · 22/01/2026 21:59

Im 45 Irish Catholic so couldn’t even hazard a guess!! A lot

Roseinbloom20 · 22/01/2026 22:05

I’m 36 and I’ve been to 9 which is a lot as most were really before their time. 4 x uncles (all late 50s /early 60s), 2 x grandparents (late 70s/early 80s), DH nan (80s) my lovely MIL (mid 60s) and the hardest my beautiful stillborn DD (31 weeks) watching my husband carry her tiny coffin will be with me forever. However, this year we have 3 weddings to attend so looking forward to those as a nice change to get family and friends together for a celebration rather than bereavement.

Gingercar · 22/01/2026 22:06

About ten. I’m mid 50s. By the end of the month I’ll have been to three this year already.

FranksInvisibleLlama · 22/01/2026 22:06

8, I’m in my early 40s.
3 grandparents
2 family friends
1 classmate in primary school
FIL
DH

There have been a couple of others I haven’t been able to go to because I had no one to look after DC.

ImogenBrocklehurst · 22/01/2026 22:08

Off the top of my head, about 20. Both grandmothers, both parents, uncle, brother, ex-partner’s grandparents, great aunt, close friend, friends’ parents and grandparents. I’m 57.

Purplerain1144 · 22/01/2026 22:09

Im 31 and went to my 7th one this week. Had 4 in less than 12 months year 2023 😩

StampOnTheGround · 22/01/2026 22:09

I’m 32 and I’ve been to 7 - 2x grandparents, 2x husband grandparents, 2x aunties and my dad.

Foggytree · 22/01/2026 22:10

I've been to 7 and am 57. All but 1 were family- my grandparents, FIL, dh's grandad. And a colleague.
Missed a couple due to kids being young and having to look after them.
