Why is my breakfast not working ?? I’m starving!

I eat breakfast at 7 am. By 830am I’m so hungry I feel nauseous ?

I have either :
1 pot full fat Greek yogurt (110g)
a banana (big not small!)
chopped almonds (about 1 tbsp)
chopped walnuts (4 or 5 walnut halves)
berries (strawberry raspberries and blueberries)
OR
porridge (a Quaker sachet) made with 150 ml semi skimmed milk and the same toppings as above .

Why am I so hungry an hour and half later am I doing something wrong ? I do a 10 min workout each morning but it’s not much and I’m just not sure why breakfast isn’t keeping me full ? Have to admit I’m not that clued up on nutrition so do I just need to eat something different? At the time I’m eating it I feel really full after so would be hard to increase quantity. I can’t have eggs for breakfast as I’m allergic to them so that’s not an option for me for something else to try.

Why are you having chopped nuts instead of whole as whole will keep you fuller for longer.

Try adding 2 or 3 tablespoons of ground linseed. You need to grind it as you eat it otherwise it goes off. It is very filling. You could also add pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds.

The sachets aren't great for you as they are highly processed.

I didn’t realise I thought as they were just oats and nothing else that they were healthy

I currently eat porridge oats with blueberries with skimmed milk which keeps me full.

However, if I have scrambled eggs (with butter) on toast or a bagel/toast with peanut butter and marmite then I feel full up and can sometimes skip lunch. Avocado on toast for me is usually brunch or lunch not for breakfast.

I can't eat porridge for breakfast at all. I've tried adding full fat yoghurt to it, peanut butter, protein powder, nuts, seeds, fibre, using whole milk nit semi but I want to chew my arm off an hour later. It's my go to breakfast for a long run but not on a workday when I'm surrounded by food.

Instead I have mixed grain sourdough with half a small avocado, 2 poached eggs and with or without prosciutto ham. Stops me from being hungry so soon and calories wise doesn't actually contain more than porridge does with all the stuff I add in it.

Potato omelettes are usually a good one for me too with various fillings. I tried a plain omelette but I find a potato one better for not being as hungry.

The Quaker Oats packets are just oats - nothing wrong with them at all

you can get packets with added junk but I don’t believe you are using them

this place is nuts sometimes

Ponderingwindow · 15/01/2026 17:40

I would add meat to your breakfast.

CherryRipe1 · 15/01/2026 17:46

I remember when I was vegan I was given a recipe for scrambled tofu and mushrooms & grilled tomato. It had added nutritional yeast and some Asian eggy smelling salt, probably sulphurous. On rye bread it was lovely. I'm sure it has other spices in it but can't remember. You could put grated dairy cheese on top if you're not vegan/allergic or vegan cheese.

I went through a phase of having a gentle dhal for breakfast, so yummy

Also OP dont forget about dishes like rice pudding or kedgeree

Try 160g of Fage 5 or 10% yoghurt with fruit. Your portion is too small. Though if I eat this at 7.30 my stomach is rumbling by 11.

35g of walnuts with a chopped apple and cinnamon lasts to 12.30/1 for me.

A stewed cooking apple with 35g pumpkin seeds is filling.

75g of smoked salmon with 1/2 avocado and some tomatoes is also filling. But everybody is different so you need to experiment.

You can grate tempeh and treat it like scrambled eggs. Very filling.

The Human being Diet book by Petronella Ravenshear is really good for nutrition info and how your body works. She explains why oats don’t work and why those portion sizes are required. Very accessible and easy read,

Don't have carbs for breakfast- have fat and protein and that will solve your problem. Or if you have carbs make it the smallest part of the meal.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 15/01/2026 18:52

You’d be better with a cheese omlette

UpMyself · 15/01/2026 18:57

OP stated that she is allergic to eggs, @DemonsandMosquitoes .

Cereal or yogurt doesn’t fill me up . The only thing that works for me is if I have a couple of pieces of toast, preferably wholemeal granary or seeded. And it makes no difference what topping I have either.

I have come to the conclusion that with all the dietary advice that is on offer (particularly the current protein and fats thing) that we all have to be aware of how our own body works.

Those are slimmers portions.
Not enough protein or calories.
Try 2 boiled eggs sliced on toast plus a banana or orange.
Omelette plus fruit
scrambled egg and a yog

Unless they are the flavoured kind, they will be just oats. However they will have been processed in some way in order to get them to cook more quickly, therefore they don’t need so much digesting by the body. A bit like the difference between brown and white rice.

I find porridge makes me hungry. I don't wake up hungry so I don't bother with breakfast. To be honest I quite often skip lunch too and eat a larger meal at around 4pm, with fruit or something before bed.

I was finding that as soon as I ate it was like my body switched on to food and just wanted more. So not switching it on in the first place seemed to work for me.

It's the same whatever breakfast I eat, toast, yoghurt, fruit, etc. The only thing that does fill me up is a full fry up and I don't much like those!

I am like this too, I have a coffee first thing, and eat little through the day, and a large evening meal. I don't calorie count. There are odd days on wkend/school hols that I may have a late breakfast with the kids, if we are having pancakes, a fry up, pastries or something. I am not a 3 meal a day kind of person, and very much believe in just eating when you're hungry.
Dm drives me insane when quizzing me on why I'm not eating; she is a regimented must eat 3 meals a day person. She'll then interrogate dh on whether I'm eating enough. I mean FFS, I'm a healthy BMI.

Christmaseree · 15/01/2026 19:29

Are you hungry or are you thirsty?

Yes, my ex used to think that you HAD to eat three meals a day and I found I just couldn't. My way of eating suits me, I'm at the low end of the BMI chart but not unhealthily so, and I don't believe in shoving food in simply because someone else says it's time for a meal!

No steel cut are the healthiest and then rolled oats.

I have the rolled oats.
