Why is my breakfast not working ?? I’m starving!

Whyhungry · 15/01/2026 08:44

I eat breakfast at 7 am. By 830am I’m so hungry I feel nauseous ?

I have either :
1 pot full fat Greek yogurt (110g)
a banana (big not small!)
chopped almonds (about 1 tbsp)
chopped walnuts (4 or 5 walnut halves)
berries (strawberry raspberries and blueberries)
OR
porridge (a Quaker sachet) made with 150 ml semi skimmed milk and the same toppings as above .

Why am I so hungry an hour and half later am I doing something wrong ? I do a 10 min workout each morning but it’s not much and I’m just not sure why breakfast isn’t keeping me full ? Have to admit I’m not that clued up on nutrition so do I just need to eat something different? At the time I’m eating it I feel really full after so would be hard to increase quantity. I can’t have eggs for breakfast as I’m allergic to them so that’s not an option for me for something else to try.

I find this fascinating. The OP has said she's allergic to eggs and a good proportion posters are telling her to eat them Confused

I suppose if the OP was suffering an allergic reaction she probably won't be concerned about being hungry.

dottiedodah · 15/01/2026 12:55

Starlight1979 Your post tickled me! My GDP had a cooked breakfast for 50 years plus .All through the war .any left over potatoes would be fried up ,eggs bacon, tomatoes ,fried bread. Both lived to 95 each no health problems .As the GP said they simply died of old age !

SomethingFun · 15/01/2026 12:58

Op, have you thought about adding eggs to your breakfast?

😁 I don’t eat breakfast as I eat more during the day then, but oats unless they have protein power in them make me ravenous about an hour after I’ve eaten them. Maybe work out the calories and protein in your current breakfast and up them a bit.

I would add in egg and meat, will keep you full for longer. I always feel hungry 1 hour after porridge, yogurt is better but with egg and meat I won’t be hungry for a long time

Apart from the milk and nuts or yoghurt and nuts which all have good amounts of protein

@itsthetea , Apart from the milk and nuts or yoghurt and nuts which all have good amounts of protein
They contain protein but the meal is high in sugar.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!!!

THE OP IS ALLERGIC TO EGGS.. I REPEAT.. THE OP IS ALLERGIC TO EGGS!!

Anyone from this point suggesting eggs will be flogged at dawn

EnchantingDaylight · 15/01/2026 13:13

The one thing that really keeps me full all morning is toast and peanut butter. No matter how much protein I eat with eggs, bacon, greek yogurt etc I am hungry again in a couple of hours. But delaying breakfast till about 10.30 works too.

Zuve · 15/01/2026 13:20

Mum said to me as I was growing up to start the day with a glass of milk. Later I have a blueberry smoothy and good.

wishingonastar101 · 15/01/2026 13:24

I have 2 meals a day - so a brunch at 11 or 12 (eggs, salad, hearty soup and fruit). Then an evening meal at 6 or 7. I am usually a bit hungry by bedtime but it's bedtime so not a problem!

I used to find that if I had breakfast at 7:30 I was ravenous by 10. If I didn’t have any breakfast then I was perhaps mildly peckish at 10 and a large glass of water / few cups of tea and I would be fine until lunch. I then found out this was 16:8 intermittent fasting and I have kept it up. Never eat breakfast now and lost 21lbs very slowly over the last year.

Cheeseaandchillibread · 15/01/2026 13:32

I went through a phase of eating normal foods for breakfast, soup and a roll, pasta salad etc. That was more filling, but now I'm back to craving breakfast foods.
I do find oats hopeless though, always have. My Mum used to send me off to school with a big bowl of porridge, milk and syrup, I'd be eating my packed lunch by break time. A wholemeal sourdough bagel is much better, or Rye bread with cottage cheese and avo.

Nezukokamado · 15/01/2026 13:33

@why we have similar breakfasts, but mine keeps me full - here's what i do in case it helps
(prepped night before)

2 tablespoons of oat/seed mix (this is oats, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds, acia berry powder, spirulina powder, sesame seeds - i make a huge batch of this every couple months)

2 tablespoons almond or cashew milk - just layer it, no need to mix

to with 100g greek yoghurt

top with 1 tsp local raw honey

top with 2 walnuts and 2 pecans

then fill to top (i put these in 450ml tupperware) with frozen blueberries, or whatever fresh fruit I have in

tasty, nutritious, easily prepped and filling!

Cazzovuoi · 15/01/2026 09:03

That’s a sugary breakfast (carbs).

Eat fat and protein. Eggs and a slice of bacon at 7am do me until 1pm easily. If I ate like you I’d be hungry an hour later too.

It’s all blood sugar related. You need protein and fat to keep it stable.

The yoghurt one isn't really sugary, but 110g of yoghurt is tiny. I eat a whole 450g pot of natural skyr, plus berries and it's around 330 calories, but has 45g protein.

You don't need long lasting carbs if you're getting a lot of protein. Protein makes you feel fuller for longer as it takes the body longer to process it.

What do you have to drink? Thirst can be mistaken for hunger. Have a glass of water as well as a tea or a coffee.

As others have suggested, I'd try eating later if possible.

clamshell24 · 15/01/2026 13:44

Too much sugar, not enough longlasting carbs or protein. Try jumbo porridge oats (add peanut butter) or eggs. Or soaked oats.

Have you considered just not being allergic to eggs op?

SafeAndStranded · 15/01/2026 13:48

There's more peer pressure to up my protein intake now I'm in my late 40s than there was to take drugs in the 90s!

@clamshell24 Too much eggs. For the OP who is allergic to eggs. As stated.

I have almost exactly this but it doesn't keep me full for long at all, an hour or two at the most, I use Bonne Maman jam jars and layer it all up. Probably a bit smaller than yours overall but not much.

Why do you keep eating it then?!

I have mine with a big mug of tea. Definitely filling for me - I would be sick if i had any more!

Tintackedsea · 15/01/2026 14:00

Go to work on an egg!

Whyhungry · 15/01/2026 14:00

I think I might replace the banana with nut butter ? As that is higher protein and not so much sugar and I’ll see if that also helps

Tintackedsea · 15/01/2026 14:01

Oh sorry! Just realised you are allergic.

Salmon then. Just like in Japan.

Popcorn76 · 15/01/2026 14:02

I love my breakfast and it often keeps me full until dinner although generally I have a v light late lunch.

I eat it at 7am and I start with a small bowl of walnuts and pumpkin seeds. I then have 2 rye crackers with goats cheese, small amount of wild salmon, capers and brocolli sprouts. I finish with an apple with peanut butter. I never need any more food until 1pm. I always have a mouthful of peanut butter last as I find finishing on something fatty/savoury keeps me full. If I ate the apple last I would feel much more hungry.
