Why is my breakfast not working ?? I’m starving!

I eat breakfast at 7 am. By 830am I’m so hungry I feel nauseous ?

I have either :
1 pot full fat Greek yogurt (110g)
a banana (big not small!)
chopped almonds (about 1 tbsp)
chopped walnuts (4 or 5 walnut halves)
berries (strawberry raspberries and blueberries)
OR
porridge (a Quaker sachet) made with 150 ml semi skimmed milk and the same toppings as above .

Why am I so hungry an hour and half later am I doing something wrong ? I do a 10 min workout each morning but it’s not much and I’m just not sure why breakfast isn’t keeping me full ? Have to admit I’m not that clued up on nutrition so do I just need to eat something different? At the time I’m eating it I feel really full after so would be hard to increase quantity. I can’t have eggs for breakfast as I’m allergic to them so that’s not an option for me for something else to try.

Op: "im allergic to eggs"

Half the comments : "YOU NEED PROTEIN EGGS EGGS EGGS EGGS"

reading comprehension at its finest <3

It's infuriating isn't it.

The yoghurt breakfast isn't even particularly low protein either. 100g of GY is comparable to an egg anyway protein wise, add in the nuts and berries. The nutritional benefits of that compared to 2 eggs and bacon ... Yeah I know which I would choose.

I would also choose not to come to MN for nutriiual advice.

Please can someone explain to me what overnight oats are?! Or more specifically, why they need to be made the night before?! It just looks like porridge oats with yoghurt, fruit and seeds in a pot?

Am I missing something?

It's basically cold porridge. Left overnight so the oats are soft like they would be if you cooked them.

I can't get on with them personally. I've tried them a few times but my brain just goes 'cold porridge 🤮 '

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 15/01/2026 10:15

Porridge ALWAYS makes me absolutely ravenous about an hour later. I’m better eating nothing.

you need a more protein based breakfast.

Porridge being a 'filling breakfast that keeps me going until lunch' is the biggest lie ever. I like porridge but don't eat it because it makes me so hungry even when I add things like nuts or protein powder.

I also agree that overnight oats = cold porridge = congealed vomit.

I do quite like chia pudding though - yogurt, chia seeds, bit of honey and berries.

My other cold/portable breakfast, which I only eat when unavoidable because I'd rather have an omelette at home is a tub of Longley Farm cottage cheese, so that might be an option for the OP?

There was a classic MN crazy thread the other day. Someone was having what appeared to be a MN approved diet of hardly any food, tiny portions of protein and veg, but a bit of wholemeal pasta in the evening but was complaining they'd not lost weight. Cue endless 'too many carbs', you'll be a big fatty forever more if you so much as glance at the pasta aisle in the supermarket.

I find if I eat early I get hungry early. So like PP breakfast is as late as I can make it - 11 if possible. I didnt eat breakfast when I worked in an office but there was a tea lady at 11 (ah those were the days)! Now I always have an egg and high protein bagel, smoked salmon. So 30gr protein minimum.

Starlight1979 · 15/01/2026 11:02

I don't know why the only options people appear to be posting are yoghurt variations (with fruit, nuts etc), eggs (the OP is allergic) or overnight oats. Is everyone on a diet or something?

2 pieces of wholemeal / seeded toast with something on it (marmite, honey, jam, salami, avocado, cheese... whatever takes your fancy).
Bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon / bacon / ham
Potato cakes
Bacon or sausage bap (or chicken sausage if you want to be healthier)
Ham and cheese toastie
Toasted teacake

Literally all of these options are more filling than yoghurt with seeds.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/01/2026 11:05

And yet still more are saying eggs

pmsl

The pots are actually cheaper - I grabbed some today 37p

equally does it matter if you have a snack at 10/11 as long as healthy ?

Why is my breakfast not working ?? I’m starving!
UniquePinkSwan · 15/01/2026 11:06

You need protein. That will never fill you

All carbs turn to sugar inside your body. Even porridge. Protein is what you need to fill you up. There are no essential carbs

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/01/2026 11:09

Make proper porridge not one of those sachets. So during the week I have the following breakfast:

  • porridge made with 40g of jumbo rolled oats and 200 ml of semi skimmed milk.
  • a slice of seeded Ryvita with butter and marmite
  • a satsuma

this keeps me full until lunch at about 12.30pm.

Proper porridge is easy and quick to make - I leave it on the low gas while i get dressed after a shower and them come back and turn the heat up to finish it while I boil the kettle for a cup of tea.

I know. I'm prepared for a flaming 😂But my grandparents would be turning in their graves with the list of things people count as breakfast - chia seeds, protein powder, chopped almonds. FFS.

What's wrong with 2 pieces of toast and some (proper) butter?! It's what I have pretty much every day and keeps me full until lunch?!

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 15/01/2026 11:12

My go to is overnight oats with some chia seeds, a little bit of peanut butter (like a teaspoon) mixed through, then before I eat it some Greek yogurt and dried fruit like raisins or cranberries over the top. It really fills me up.

BUT IT'S TURNING TO SUGAR IN YOUR BODY

You might as well sprinkle some class a drugs on top as well.

Ok well I have 2 pieces of wholemeal / granary toast every day (at around 8.30-9am) with either marmite, butter or jam) and I manage to survive until my lunch (usually 1pm). I don't need 4 boiled eggs to stay full.

Processed meat not exactly the healthiest way to start the day though is it?

I agree with eating later but if you have to eat before work then it's not always possible.

Instant oats are probably too carby to keep you going all morning OP. I think you need the steel cut ones that haven't been processed to keep you going but they take much longer to cook.

What yoghurt are you eating? If it's some crap that's more sugar than anything then that's probably your issue. If I have Yeo valley plain kefir with banana, muslei, fruit and seeds it will keep me going to lunch - better than porridge I find (the porridge i have is not instant but not steel cut either).

Starlight1979 · 15/01/2026 11:19

I genuinely don't think the posters on MN are real sometimes?! When I am in the office we all take our breakfast / make it there. Pretty much everyone has toast (or an equivalent like bagels or muffins), cereal or a pastry of some sort. Yoghurt and fruit are definitely more popular through the summer but not at all at this time of year.

We even - MN close your eyes - do a bacon butty run on a Friday morning when there's a few of us in!

I don't think a slice of ham or salami on a bagel with cream cheese is going to kill you.

Have you ever been to Italy? Spain? France? You know what a continental breakfast is don't you?

soupyspoon · 15/01/2026 11:24

I never found greek yoghurt particularly filling, unfortunately I cant eat it now due to acid but would only eat the full fat dairy anyway. Eggs are probably better, on toast, the best of both worlds. Or Beans on toast

Or just accept that your body needs regular snacking, nothing wrong with that, we're all different

Many years ago porridge would have me really hungry after I ate it, but now years later, porridge will fill me up, again only made with full fat milk, the pinhead oatmeal so I make it in batches. The body changes over the years.

You know sugar is energy dont you. We cannot survive without it

Some people respond better to a lower fat, high carb diet, we're all different.

Atr you saying carbohydrates as a food group are unnecessary? My college biochemistry lecturer would disagree, it’s especially needed in the cold winter months.
