Why is my breakfast not working ?? I’m starving!

Whyhungry · 15/01/2026 08:44

I eat breakfast at 7 am. By 830am I’m so hungry I feel nauseous ?

I have either :
1 pot full fat Greek yogurt (110g)
a banana (big not small!)
chopped almonds (about 1 tbsp)
chopped walnuts (4 or 5 walnut halves)
berries (strawberry raspberries and blueberries)
OR
porridge (a Quaker sachet) made with 150 ml semi skimmed milk and the same toppings as above .

Why am I so hungry an hour and half later am I doing something wrong ? I do a 10 min workout each morning but it’s not much and I’m just not sure why breakfast isn’t keeping me full ? Have to admit I’m not that clued up on nutrition so do I just need to eat something different? At the time I’m eating it I feel really full after so would be hard to increase quantity. I can’t have eggs for breakfast as I’m allergic to them so that’s not an option for me for something else to try.

I do love beans on toast. With a little grated cheese

that keeps me full

DeanElderberry · 15/01/2026 11:32

The continent is big. I enjoy Dutch slices of cheese and cold meats eaten with a knife and fork. I'm less enthralled by the pickled fish and fermented cucumber offered further east.

Flat mushroom filled with grated cheese and zapped in the microwave is quick, sustaining, and egg-free. Toasted cheese is also good. Sausages and ham. Bacon and button mushrooms. But basically, protein. No oats.

C152 · 15/01/2026 11:34

Greek yoghurt doesn't keep me full for long either. Try whole porridge oats with full fat milk and, if you don't like it plain, a combination of fruit and cinnamon. (There's no need to soak oats the night before and they take a couple of mins to cook on the stove.)

Also, maybe your body just needs to eat more regularly? So have your porridge for breakfast, then have the banana or an apple an hour later. Have lunch at 12pm and then an afternoon snack?

You know sugar is energy dont you. We cannot survive without it

Some people respond better to a lower fat, high carb diet, we're all different.

Thank you 👏I would never, ever be full off a yoghurt and some seeds and nuts. It would maybe be an hour or two before I needed to eat again. But toast / bagels with something on them keeps me full until lunchtime. Usually cream cheese, avocado, ham or something sweet.

For full transparency, I'm in my 40s, 5ft7 and 10st10. I've never really eaten anything OTHER than carbs (with an addition of some sort). for breakfast for my entire life. My mum, grandparents and family are all the same. In fact, my Gran had two pieces of toast with butter and a cup of tea (2 sugars) every day until she died at 92.

Like you say @soupyspoon, every body is different and has different requirements.

Try a savoury breakfast, with eggs and more protein, you're spiking your insulin earlier with sweet choices. The glucose Goddess is a great follow on Instagram for advice on this

3luckystars · 15/01/2026 11:38

This is interesting. I eat a similar breakfast and am hungry about an hour afterwards too. Whatever time that is.

Whyhungry · 15/01/2026 11:38

Thanks for all the ideas , it’s interesting how a lot of people also find that breakfast makes them more hungry too ! I’ve been so confused as I feel full initially then it’s like my stomach is totally empty a short time later ! I will try to have more protein and see if that works if not I think I’ll need to add a snack at 830/9

anything carby will rocket your blood sugar level for a short time and then plummet - making you feel hungry. I'd up your protein more - maybe add some eggs into the mix

oscalo · 15/01/2026 11:39

Is this a competition for the most perfect eater or what?

These threads rarely end well. Fill yer boots with whatever works for you. I was in Italy last year and you'd want to see the sugary shite they eat by the bucketful for breakfast, same in Spain and France recently, those deep fried churros and thick hot sugary chocolate, and the French cafe creme in a bowl and croissants with jam). I had these every morning in each country. Divine. Doesn't seem to bother them too much either. And I was full as an egg too. And stayed that way until lunch.

3luckystars · 15/01/2026 11:39

Beans on toast sounds lovely!!

Comefromaway · 15/01/2026 11:43

All those advising eggs - OP is allergic

I did stop feeling hungry an hour after breakfast when I switched to eggs. I have two eggs, scrambled or poached with 1 slice of toast. Being allergic to eggs unfortunately cuts down your options.

Greek yoghurt is good but you need to add something to it, maybe oats or chia seeds Porridge sachets are less lasting than proper oats. I'm not a huge advocate of it but in your situation you could maybe add a scoop of protein powder.

Anyahyacinth · 15/01/2026 11:43

I did overnight oats for years, after an op I switched to an easy nut based protein bar and the difference is stark ...I don't think about food until 4 ish ...big difference

Soontobesingles · 15/01/2026 11:51

Why is everyone suggesting eggs when OP has said she is allergic to eggs?

BeardofHagrid · 15/01/2026 11:52

I have the same issue, OP. Sometimes I am simply ravenous by 9am! I wish there was an easy solution.

dottiedodah · 15/01/2026 12:01

I vary my BF and have sliced Avocado on wholemeal (one slice) . 2 tomatoes grilled. or lightly fried) on toast .A Banana sandwich on wholemeal.I dont find porridge at all.

Because OP mentioned it towards the end of the post.

And people obv don’t read the whole of the first post

so what’s the point of replying if cba to read the op

I get not all read updated posts from op. But surely the first one should be read 😜

blackpooolrock · 15/01/2026 12:14

Your breakfast is all carbs and no protein. Big sugar spike then when your sugar is crashing you are craving more sugar and you are hungry.

Have eggs, chicken or beef of some sort as part of your breakfast instead.

I agree but with this one I don't think many would have read to the end.

Apart from the milk and nuts or yoghurt and nuts which all have good amounts of protein

Do you make this yourself or what type of bar is this? I neeeed it!!!

itsthetea · 15/01/2026 12:47

The oats plus milk is not even 200 calories - 2 walnuts another 50. Even when I am watching my weight I aim for 500 calories at breakfast

you are hungry as you ain’t eating enough

Poached eggs on toast with avocado fills me up for hours. Four eggs.

Oh my god she literally said she's allergic to eggs. RTFT.

Seriously what kind of moron can't read to the end of the (fairly short) first post by the OP.... god help them. Attention span of a goldfish.
