Why is my breakfast not working ?? I’m starving!

I eat breakfast at 7 am. By 830am I’m so hungry I feel nauseous ?

I have either :
1 pot full fat Greek yogurt (110g)
a banana (big not small!)
chopped almonds (about 1 tbsp)
chopped walnuts (4 or 5 walnut halves)
berries (strawberry raspberries and blueberries)
OR
porridge (a Quaker sachet) made with 150 ml semi skimmed milk and the same toppings as above .

Why am I so hungry an hour and half later am I doing something wrong ? I do a 10 min workout each morning but it’s not much and I’m just not sure why breakfast isn’t keeping me full ? Have to admit I’m not that clued up on nutrition so do I just need to eat something different? At the time I’m eating it I feel really full after so would be hard to increase quantity. I can’t have eggs for breakfast as I’m allergic to them so that’s not an option for me for something else to try.

OP posts:

Yes, but “food” means a couple of tablespoons of Greek yoghurt. It doesn’t mean a meal.

It will depend on the medication. I feel horrifically nauseous if I don’t eat ‘properly’ with the meds.

(obviously, this is me, not the OP. I was just explaining why ‘don’t have breakfast’ doesn’t work for everyone)

carpetfluffs · 15/01/2026 09:47

I love Breakfast & the below fills me up most days

Greek yoghurt with granola & fruit
Overnight oats with fruit
chia seeds with fruit
avocado on toast
egg on toast.

I eat around 8am but often have a snack at 11.

SheilaFentiman · 15/01/2026 09:48

Protein, protein, protein. Asda does boxes of cooked chicken, eat some of that for a quick hit. Or at the least, peanut butter on something.

It’s so MNs to be told to scrap breakfast when asking why breakfast doesn’t fill me up! 😆😆

Occasionaluser · 15/01/2026 09:52

Recommend trying overnight oats . I have mine with milled seeds and hemp , large spoon of Greek yoghurt and fruit . I also eat it when I’m hungry rather than at breakfast time - so today 9.30

genesis92 · 15/01/2026 09:53

You needs eggs

BoxingHare · 15/01/2026 09:58

You need some heavy duty good protein. Yes, yoghurt has protein but not nearly enough. Chicken, salmon, tofu. I eat my breakfast about 9am and don't start getting hungry until about 3pm.

I tried porridge but ended up ravenous an hour later.

This is so true 🤣🤣

Personally speaking, if I eat breakfast of any description, doesn't matter what type of breakfast it is or how high in protein it is, or whether the carbs are slow release, complex, wholegrain, low GI carbs or not, or whether it's no carbs at all,......regardless, whatever I eat for breakfast, I am God damn ravenous by 11am. Like seriously hunting for food. The craving to eat is insane, it's on another level. It's all consuming and I'm literally hunting down something to eat by mid to late morning. I can't suppress it.
But, if I don't eat breakfast at all, nothing, nadda, zero food, I simply don't feel hungry at all for the rest of the morning. In fact, if I don't eat breakfast, I don't even feel hungry for lunch and I don't start feeling hungry until about 4 or 5pm. It's like not eating breakfast switches my appetite off.
But if I eat breakfast, no matter what the calorie/protein/carb levels or ratios are, it doesn't matter (I know cos I've tried it all), I am frenzied with hunger by mid to late morning.
You'd think it'd be the opposite.
I can't explain it.

Shff · 15/01/2026 10:00

I love porridge but I tend to go savoury and with jumbo oats, it keeps me far more full than sachets. So yesterday morning I had the oats with mushrooms, peas and some tofu with a little bit of cheese

CautiousLurker2 · 15/01/2026 10:06

Because it’s very high in carbs - you get a sugar hike within 15mins and then a huge sugar slump 60-90mins later.

Either skip breakfast until later in the day and/or swap it for eggs/protein.

Morepositivemum · 15/01/2026 10:08

Porridge is terrible for me for hunger, and to me fruit and yoghurt is nothing really. I’d say your body thinks there’s a second course coming! I’d consider a slice of toast or a boiled egg as well

Nobody says it works for everyone. OP had asked for suggestions and if they aren't suitable she won't try them.

Shff · 15/01/2026 10:13

op is allergic to egg

pizzaHeart · 15/01/2026 10:14

I eat a lot of sweet things, don’t do workouts or calorie counts in the morning ( I do need it it’s just other stuff on the way) but even for me your breakfast is too sweet.

I would go for old fashioned porridge with seeds/ nuts and berries and leave banana out. Then have it as a snack with coffee later.
I would also delay breakfast as much as possible but I wouldn’t skip it. I personally behave better after a small breakfast and then a snack with extra cup of tea/ coffee 1,5 hours later. My body doesn’t like big breakfast, very occasionally- fine but not as a regular thing.
I guess people are different, DH can do a big breakfast and then go on for 6 hours. I’m not. I was always a small portion type.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 15/01/2026 10:15

Porridge ALWAYS makes me absolutely ravenous about an hour later. I’m better eating nothing.

you need a more protein based breakfast.

Same here.

rockinrobins · 15/01/2026 10:19

Yoghurt and a bit of fruit isn't really a big breakfast. And instant porridge is just fast carbs. You need some proper protein/ meat/ eggs etc if you want to stay full. Also try a savoury rather than sweet breakfast.

(Edit - just saw you're allergic to eggs but there are plenty of other protein options)

Biscuits4 · 15/01/2026 10:22

Some people just need more in the morning. My friend struggled with her weight for years, was never successful on diets as she was trying to cut down on her breakfast. It took her a while, but as soon as she started eating three things in the morning (from cereal, toast, fruit, eggs or cheese), she managed to work it out.

As others have said Quaker oats might be causing a spike due to quicker release. Although, bananas are considered healthy, they have a reasonable amount of sugar, so again they might be cause a sugar spike.

Irritatediron · 15/01/2026 10:23

Op: "im allergic to eggs"

Half the comments : "YOU NEED PROTEIN EGGS EGGS EGGS EGGS"

reading comprehension at its finest <3

UpMyself · 15/01/2026 10:23

porridge (a Quaker sachet) UPF, too much sugar and not enough protein.

Jugendstiel · 15/01/2026 10:25

Which Quaker sachets? Most of them have sugar in which will cause a blood sugar drop that leads to a feeling of hunger. I have the no added sugar fruit and oats one, and it works far better than the others.

You could also try alternating it a bit more - variety could curb some cravings. I went off bread for years but have recently started having a thin slice of dark rye toasted, with marmite and a boiled egg. Just one slice and an egg is about 250 cals and really filling until lunchtime.

Same on no breakfast helping this. I’ve been doing 16:8 for a few years and now it’s normal to eat only at lunch and dinner. Per other posters I’d be snacking all morning otherwise.

I'm exactly the same. Breakfast (or early lunch!) about 11.30 and that's more or less it apart from a small bowl of greek yog with fruit in afternoon, until tea. Finish grub at 7pm.

I'm not doing 16/8 to lose weight, it's a discipline and habit forming to keep me out of the snack box and it really works!

Starlight1979 · 15/01/2026 10:49

Please can someone explain to me what overnight oats are?! Or more specifically, why they need to be made the night before?! It just looks like porridge oats with yoghurt, fruit and seeds in a pot?

Am I missing something?
