I’m confused- has the US gone to war with them? What are the implications if so?

Unfortunately, sometimes tribalism and loyalty to a side can blind people and analysing potential consequences and deliberately interpret doing so as meaning that you support "xyz" dictator.

This always happens, when Assad was removed in 2024, some people warned about the potential for minorities in Syria to be targeted, they were called Assadists and today Christians, Alawites, Druze and other minorities are being massacred daily, but at least Assad is gone....

I'm always reminded of when the Democrat's were warned about changing a particular rule in the Senate but they went ahead:

"The nuclear option was invoked on November 21, 2013, when a Democratic majority led by Harry Reid used the procedure to reduce the cloture threshold for nominations, other than nominations to the Supreme Court, to a simple majority.[3] On April 6, 2017, the nuclear option was used again, this time by a Republican majority led by Mitch McConnell, to extend that precedent to Supreme Court nominations, in order to enable cloture to be invoked on the nomination of Neil Gorsuch by a simple majority.[4][5][6]"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_option

I agree with you.

I can’t think why something that’s been tried hundreds of times before will suddenly work

i cant think why states interfering unilaterally with others can ever be considered a safe precedent ro set

You can read the link below. It’ll give you a few indicators.

EasternStandard · 06/01/2026 15:29

I wonder if people don’t want it to work as it’s not the US president they would have backed. That’s a shame for the people there.

I think people should back people there regardless. .

BelleHathor · 06/01/2026 15:31

The McFaul article? It's a joke just like Ambassador McFaul is, a cruel reminder of how America (and many other states) can no longer cultivate quality diplomats. Kissinger can be criticised due to the consequences of actions that he took, however he had more stature, intelligence and ability to negotiate in his left finger than McFaul possesses.

Can you tell, I dislike him. It's idiots like him that spur the Uniparty (Neolib Semocrats and Neocon Republicans) to take the stupid actions that they have taken in Foreign policy over the last decades whilst American's can't even afford healthcare.

The criticism is from both the left and right.

I’ll await a post saying I hope it works out for the rookie of Venezuela.

Along with all these political and economic reasons there is the thought that this is about Maduro mocking Trump on social media.
Yeah, crazy, but bear with me here.
We know crazy isn't a blocker for Trump
and
Those sort of posts prevent USA visas or randomly get you 3 weeks in a foreign jail without a phone call, on arrival
and also
There was that war about threatening Dubbya Bush's daddy WMD.

Trump actually accused Maduro of copying his dance in a press conference today:

Clash Report (@clashreport) on X

Trump on Maduro: He is a violent guy, he gets up there and tries to imitate my dance a little bit. He killed millions of people, they have a torture chamber in the middle of Caracas that they are closing.

Teddleshon1 · 06/01/2026 13:23

@rainingsnoring I wouldn’t shed any tears if other similarly unelected thugs who oppressed their own people (such as Putin and Khamenei) were whisked away in order to face justice, would you?

Okay but would you object if someone suddenly attacked your home, killed your children and neighbours and stole your posessions and land because they thought you were a threat or nasty or believed they were entitled to your property or would you suddenly believe in the rule of law and private property ownership?
I suspect we know the answer....

rainingsnoring · 06/01/2026 18:34

Teddleshon1 · 06/01/2026 14:05

@BelleHathor yeah we get it, USA bad ; Venezuela, China, Iran, Russia, Hamas etc etc good.

Goodness. Is that really what you have taken from @BelleHathor's excellent, thoughtful and informative posts? Do you think the world is an American super hero movie? Your thinking is incredibly childish, although none of my children would make such a foolish remark so that's unfair to many children!

This is what it’s about yes?

Not Venezuelans. If Biden had acted it would be different.

Exactly. It's not as if it has ever worked brilliantly before. On the contrary, it has generally been a disaster.

EasternStandard · 06/01/2026 18:40

People are willing it to be bad. In nearly every post.

I really hope for the millions there they’re wrong.

A very fair question. One that the Iranian regime should consider.

You know, financing and directing murderous thugs who invade a country, murder lots of people, kidnap others and then murder most of them.

’Getting your collar felt’ for horrendous crimes in international terms is basically having the US knock on your door.

But you don’t believe in that for Iran, do you? Why is that?

Thank you, unfortunately there are many people that see "war as a game" especially when the devastation happens over "there". I know many veterans on all sides of these misadventures and war really does rip something from your soul. I also know many people who had family that were disappeared or lived under dictatorships in Latin America abetted by the CIA and many predominately black neighbourhoods that were destroyed by the drugs that flooded in.

The recent strikes on boats in the Caribbean are an extension of a long US tradition of interference in the region.

No one sees it like this. What would be good is if people posted they hoped Venezuelans succeeded.

BelleHathor · 06/01/2026 18:57

Venezuelan's in Venezuela are good right now, out on marches for the 3rd day in a row. Don't need to worry about them, the ones that grew up there know their history and will fight for what they want.

That is Telesur, the official Venezuelan news channel, anyone who actually cared about Venezuelan's or knew anything about what is actually happening inside the country right now would know that.....

Oh and I thought you were all about "Listen to the Venezuelans", that video is reporting what some of them are saying right now. I'm actually listening and will respect their decisions.

The official news channel in a state dictatorship? Ok you’re doing their work for them there

EasternStandard · 06/01/2026 19:07

Russians have a state news channel ie propaganda too and kill dissidents. This isn’t unknown really

BelleHathor · 06/01/2026 19:14

Listen to the Venezuelan's, no not those ones, only these ones over hear, saying what I like to hear...

Imagine actually believing that the propaganda only happens over there... amusing.

Do you trust the official news channels of Iran and Russia too?

Can you see the problem if so? What might be the issue do you think

GettingTooOldForThis · 06/01/2026 19:38

I have been reading this thread with interest.

@EasternStandard I do not understand what point, if you even have one, you are trying to make.

I am sure anyone who is interested enough to read and comment on this thread are hoping for better things for the Venezuelan people.

But it is up to the Venezuelan people who live in Venezuela to decide what the future holds for them now.

No other country should be involved or allowed to profit from what has happened.

Of course I have one 😬

If you could ask nicely without that part I’d be happy to explain it if it’s difficult.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 06/01/2026 19:44

From what I know, there is a lockdown in Caracas right now and the only people out are the "Colectivos" the private militia of the regime who patrol the streets on motorbikes.
