I’m confused- has the US gone to war with them? What are the implications if so?

Maybe the 8 million who have left over the past 10 years want a say!

No problem at all, it's actually wonderful having an adult conversation!

Agree about Starmer, he looks like he's waiting for the new instructions of what's acceptable to say to be downloaded lol. It is the height of hypocrisy regarding Russia.

I think a part of what scares Trump and all American administrations is that they're fully aware of the illegal actions (including Colour revolutions) that they've carried out that they worry about China or another country acting the same way if they become more powerful. It's judging others by America's own lack of standards and respect for sovereignty.

Also Trump made so many promises during the election season that he's so far failed to deliver (just look at the Epstein shenanigans). The truth is manufacturing is likely never coming back, but he can't say that.

Yes. Unfortunately, Starmer, the lawyer, is quite pathetic when it comes to criticising clearly illegal operations carried out by the US (and engaging the UK in them too).

I'm sure they are aware of the illegality of their actions but they seem to have atypical bully attitude of grab everything before anyone else can. Trump has made it so blatant though. He is so crass and seems to get positively excited by the violence. I actually hoped he would do better on foreign policy than the Dems because of the way he campaigned but it hasn't worked out like that!

I think a lot of Trump's MAGA base are already very disappointed in him, disgusted even. They don't want a never ending range of foreign wars. They want him to concentrate on the US and improve their lives. The cover ups over the Epstein files have ben v unpopular too. While the tariffs could be a good idea in terms of bringing back manufacturing and fitted with his general protectionist leanings, the way he implements everything is so chaotic, even borderline insane!

Despite all the criticism they receive in the Western media, including on here, China, Russia and even Iran have actually been far more peaceful and restrained than the US in terms of geopolitics. I guess everyone has their red lines though!

Do you trust the official news channels of Iran and Russia too?

Can you see the problem if so? What might be the issue do you think

@BelleHathor's point has completely passed you by hasn't it? Again....
Back to the American Goodies and Baddies movie!

Oh I was enjoying the lack of engagement from you tbf after the flounce over a question.

And no to your question. I’m intrigued by anyone who trusts state tv in dictatorships.

GettingTooOldForThis · 06/01/2026 20:22

@EasternStandard ok I'll ask nicely.

Please could you explain what your point is then.

Okay but would you object if someone suddenly attacked your home, killed your children and neighbours and stole your posessions and land because they thought you were a threat or nasty or believed they were entitled to your property or would you suddenly believe in the rule of law and private property ownership?
I suspect we know the answer....

How is this scenario relevant to the arrest of Maduro?

The only good thing about the departure of millions of Venezuelans to the US is that it raised the average IQ of both countries.

mouthpipette · 07/01/2026 00:44

I'm not sure how much it's been discussed, but one benefit to the US of bringing about a non socialist government in Venezuela, is that it would deal a severe blow to Cuba.
Since the fall of the Soviet Union Cuba, has only survived thanks to the lifeline thrown by Chavez and his successor. In return for oil, Venezuela received Cuban medics, teachers and military training. Rubio has never hidden his desire to liberate Cuba from communism, so they could get two birds with one stone.
Just a thought.

Blimey what a thing to post.

Teddleshon1 · 07/01/2026 07:49

@mouthpipette I’ve heard the Cuban angle discussed quite a lot, as you say it’s Rubio’s pet interest. Apparently Maduro’s bodyguards were mostly Cuban.

Manifestsleep · 07/01/2026 08:32

New to the thread but have been reading with interest.

My (albeit limited understanding) is that the whole thing is not binary:

Maduro was an illegitimate dictator and the people of Venezuela are glad he's gone (for now).

The only reason Trump cares about this is because he wants the oil and that is his primary motivator.

Surely the people of Venezuela should be allowed the results of the last election or to hold a new one but that might jeopardize the US getting it's mitts on the oil so Trump won't allow it to happen.
