I’m confused- has the US gone to war with them? What are the implications if so?

I have Venezuelan acquaintances, they have been waiting for this for 25 years and are celebrating hard right now.

Genuine question, will they be happy with Rodriguez becoming president?

If you believe that trump has done it for the ordinary people then you are seriously deluded.
My point was that people welcoming a new regime does not necessarily mean it's a good thing, which I suspect was clear to everyone else.

There are ways that other countries could have supported them without taking their oil military action that is certainly at the outside of legal if not directly illegal.

There are times when removing a dictator can cause issues. I spoke to a gentleman who was from Iraq. He was no supporter of Saddam Hussain, but said removing him in that way was the worst thing that could have happened for Iraq. Removing SH meant that others, who were far more extreme had the way cleared to step into his place and they caused far more issues.
He was here because he had had to flee Iraq because of death threats because of the section of society he belonged to. He left, after death threats, on the day his house was blown up with his family inside. As he sat outside, his phone rang. "You're next" the voice told him. He drove to the airport and got on a plane.

It's not something that should be done on a whim because someone wants to get their hands on the country's wealth and certainly doesn't care about the people that will be effected by this.

What do you think the people there should have done? What did you want to happen?

Are you saying Iranians are not justified in their protests?

Yes, absolutely. That's exactly what I am saying. 🙄

U.S. power comes from the petrodollar - most oil worldwide is traded in U.S. dollars. Because oil is essential, this creates constant global demand for the dollar and passively props up the U.S. economy. When oil-producing countries move away from the dollar, that influence weakens, which makes Washington highly sensitive to any challenge to the system.

Venezuela has huge oil reserves and has talked about selling oil in other currencies. Saddam Hussein and Gaddafi- both pushed alternatives to the dollar for oil or gold-backed trade. Basically when leaders of oil-rich countries stray from the petrodollar, it puts them in conflict with U.S. interests. And then we hear about WMDs- or in this case cocaine as a good excuse to go in and overthrow the regime etc.

More fool them if they think that DJT or his choice of President will be better for them (unless they are part of a corrupt elite, of course).
Like any other leader, Maduro will have had some who adore him and some who hate him, just the same as Trump, Starmer and all other current leaders.

Ok cool. Let's bomb them into freedom. Nobody really needs stability do they. Lovely civil wars are always brilliant for women.

Exactly, look at what's happening to the Women in Syria right now after the Obama started project to oust Assad was successful last year.
Clue: they are being kidnapped, forcefully "married off" and if they resist being killed on video that is often published by the evil perpetrators. The Alawites are being massacred.

This is a thread of just 23 women:

We don’t have enough oil left to warrant a full scale invasion. Sorry “liberation”.

We have road bumps and..........err.

Give it up @rainingsnoringif you can’t answer that’s on you.

Teddleshon1 · 03/01/2026 18:32

@rainingsnoring are you actually suggesting that life for Venezuelans under Maduro has been comparable to that for Americans or Brits under Trump or Starmer?!

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 03/01/2026 18:33

Breaking news is that Trump is also threatening Columbia. Watch this space 👀

Vavavum · 03/01/2026 18:35

Trump has removed a dictator and narcoterroist.

ZoeCM · 03/01/2026 18:35

While I admit I know very little about Venezuelan politics, I do know that whenever countries such as the US and the UK stick their noses into developing countries, they/we usually end up making the situation even worse.

It’s madness, not to mention the ‘24 vote that was ignored.

It wasn’t a developing country. It was a rich country where its citizens were thriving. Listen to the podcast. What happened to that country could happen to us very easily.

So you are happy for the 2024 vote to be ignored? Because as I understand it, that is not who the Venezuelans voted in as President? Happy to be corrected if I am wrong.

Whoever they want then. It’s up to them. The link below made a strong case for her, if there’s someone else then fine.

It was a perfectly reasonable and sensible question. If you don’t want to answer it, people can draw their own conclusions.

TiredCatLady · 03/01/2026 19:03

I guess I’m in the minority whose Venezuelan friends are aghast at this. They fled a long time ago and all they’re thinking is that they’re headed directly to failed state by way of US oil grab and they’ll all end up poorer.

Does anyone just think of Venezuelan people without this?

The people there were not happy, is that relevant to you?

Demonstrations to uphold the results of the election, along with vigils for political prisoners, occurred worldwide after the July election. Spontaneous protests broke out immediately after the election, while later rallies were organized by the Venezuelan opposition;[3]Maduro claimed the opposition was encouraging a coup and has charged demonstraters with terrorism, while initiating an unprecedented crackdown.[4] Maduro's security forces have gone door-to-door seeking to arrest protesters, poll workers and members of the opposition in what Maduro has referred to as Operation Tun Tun, and armed bands of Maduro supporters known as colectivos have joined security forces in repressing dissent.

Bet you were spouting the same old propaganda about Iraq and their so called WMD. How did that turn out?
