I actually stop reading some posts because I can't be arsed to try and work out what is being said. Why do people put DS instead of son? What is STBX?

OP posts:

Because it would be just a tad OTT? 😁

Nah! 😂 I mean DNah! 😂

EmeraldShamrock000 · 29/12/2025 19:20

How dare you slag off the trend that has been going since MN began. 💪😂 Learn them or move on.

AngelaBB · 29/12/2025 19:34

I enjoy trying to work them out.

Fairywingsandroses · 29/12/2025 19:41

The one that irritates me is ddog!

PortSalutPlease · 29/12/2025 19:48

It’s not compulsory to be on Mumsnet - you can always try Netmums. 🤷‍♀️

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/12/2025 19:57

I read d as dear. I think I may be in the minority. As for the rest, you get used to it op. And I don’t get why the use of acronyms would annoy anyone tbh. Specific language forms part of an identity of a group.

And shorthand emerged from chat forums, of, I dunno, over 25 years ago?

💡Has OP just discovered the internet? Been in a decades-long coma?💡

Mithral · 29/12/2025 20:09

I just remembered the worst one - BD for baby dance which means having sex while trying to conceive. That one gives me the heebie jeebies.

RavenhairedRachel · 29/12/2025 21:28

Totally agree absolutely hate abbreviations it's lazy. I sometimes have to Google what things mean all this dd, ds, do business is ludicrous. What you call your husband dear husband in real life ? Not if you don't want to sound ridiculous.

But this is not RL, it's MN. It's writing, not speech. Husbands are written about not to.
We're used to different registers for different situations in RL, and the abbreviations/initialising, etc. on MN are part of its register.

The terminology on MN is like gaining a whole new GCSE…

As it happens, I have 3 new GCSE’s - Stansted Airport / Mumsnet / Gatwick Airport (though one stranger recently voluntarily “upgraded” me to ‘A’ Level standard 😂)

It’s not real life though. You can’t just say that you do one thing in one situation so you should do it absolutely everywhere.

This is an internet forum and those are the abbreviations for many, many forums. Mumsnet didn’t invent them.

Horses7 · 29/12/2025 23:33

I agree OP D this and D that before everything is really annoying !!!

PruneEnigmatique · 30/12/2025 00:30

As you can see from some replies, Newbie (or should I say OP), Mumsnet can be a nasty place. You'll need to grow a thick skin to flourish here. I agree with you about the abbreviations, especially when posters refer to DH - "dear/darling" husband - when complaining about said husband's behaviour that borders on abuse. That's when the very useful abbreviation, LTB (leave the bastard), enters the chat. Yes, abbreviations are part of the Mumsnet lingo and you get used to some of them, but they are annoying as hell and as you said, naff.

Is the poster who’s done this in the room with us?

Are you 12? Confused What a stupid phrase. This isn’t TikTok you know.

Quincette · 29/12/2025 09:39

😂I missed that one!

The Tattle MN threads make me laugh as they rip the piss out of the silly D stuff.

Personally, I hate it. It’s so cutesy and was originally taken from the style of American forums where ‘Dear’ might be a more used term. It has always grated with me on here and 2026 will mark my 20th year on MN.

You could equally read the D as 'damn'...

BeanQuisine · 30/12/2025 04:19

It's basically a relic of the dim days of dialup and early "message boards", when the internet first became awash with people of poor literacy and atrocious typing skills, who preferred tapping out "u" because "you" is too difficult.

Many Mumsnetters have always hated it but they're drowned out by the idiots.

Hi @2026newbie and welcome to MN.

I think you’ll find that TSSDNCOP.

Google's hilarious on this one:

TSSDNCOP is an acronym commonly found on UK parenting forums like Mumsnet, meaning "The Sex Shop Does Not Care About Pregnancy," used humorously or cynically when discussing baby/pregnancy items bought from places that aren't specialized, highlighting the disconnect between adult fun and baby needs.

Unlike Google, The Secret Service Does Not Comment On Procedure 😏

blackhorseknight · 30/12/2025 05:32

KitsyWitsy · 29/12/2025 08:49

Sod off then.

It's just how it is here. If you don't like it, then find somewhere else to hang out.

That’s the standard Mumsnet’s warm welcome dear poster! As you can see full of nice women, mums and Dddddd…😂

Rosygoldapple · 30/12/2025 05:37

I hate the ‘d’ abbreviations when they make the word longer - ddog, dsister etc.

andfinallyhereweare · 30/12/2025 07:09

It makes people feel important that they are in the know and others aren't.
Abbreviations are stupid and ignorant.

No, they are time-saving devices. Abbreviations are used in all walks of life not just MN.
