I actually stop reading some posts because I can't be arsed to try and work out what is being said. Why do people put DS instead of son? What is STBX?

The worse ones are ones that don’t even make the word shorter like Ddog

I don’t mind most of the acronyms - but this one really annoys me. It’s more letters to type.

Coconutter24 · 29/12/2025 08:57

I would suggest learning them (you will anyway without trying if you stick around). You can’t join a forum then tell people what to do when they’ve been doing it years

OK, now you've joined the whole site will stop doing what it's been doing for the past 25 years, thank goodness you've pointed it out

pictoosh · 29/12/2025 08:59

The abbreviations have been around forever, so they're not about to change.
It's an internet forum thing and was in place before mumsnet.

Mithral · 29/12/2025 09:00

I saw someone use DDH recently - I think they'd got that DH meant husband and also noted people put D before everything. Then combined them. Or DDH means something else and I'm behind with the MN acronyms.

OttersMayHaveShifted · 29/12/2025 09:01

You surely don't think a forum with over 8 million users is going to change the traditions and habits it's fond of and comfortable with, just because a newbie doesn't like it? It's not hard to get used to, and anyway there's a list of the most common ones if you're having trouble understanding!

Also DNiece and DNephew, or recently, DLabrador. Ridiculous.

Mithral · 29/12/2025 09:07

I thought the D was dear rather than darling.

All the D this and D that makes me DPuke.

It’s the “My DH has been out drinking for three days, never contributes to the bills or housework, and I think there’s another woman”.

There’s nothing bloody “D” about that H!

Laiste · 29/12/2025 09:12

Yeah, it's super naff here.

I'd recommend leaving and never coming back. Don't waste your time here.

Kind of arrogant to join a website and start making demands.

This sort of shit is standard across most of the Internet.

You don't have to use it yourself and you actually stop noticing it after a while . My brain just says husband when my eyes see the term dh. I don't actually read dear husband.

The Internet won't change for you and going round demanding it does well, all you'll do is get people's backs up. If you dont like the terms don’t use them.

Yep 😂 main character syndrome. It's endemic.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/12/2025 09:18

Wots this? Abbreviations on a chat forum you say? 🧐

DisplayPurposesOnly · 29/12/2025 09:19

Every time this complaint comes up I am taken aback at people's lack of reading comprehension. You may not like the abbreviations but you can generally work out what they mean from their context.

Personally I like ddog 🐕 And in my head it's definitely dearest not darling.

feathermucker · 29/12/2025 09:19

It’s well established, the use of abbreviations. You won’t change it and will (have to) get used to it.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/12/2025 09:19

These abbreviations should be hyper-linked to what they actually mean, or a link on every page to where the compendium of explanations is. IMO

MarriedWithCauldron · 29/12/2025 09:23

The worst one I ever saw was STBXBIL. I can’t believe that was any easier to type than “my ex’s brother”, and it certainly wouldn’t have been any easier for people to read.

Quincette · 29/12/2025 09:06

I thought I'd seen it all on here - eg DDog etc, but on a recent thread the OP wanted to find out who her partner had transferred money to in the middle of the night. A poster used the term Ddrugdealer when suggesting who it could have been!
